I think we can safely assume then that the Bruins never had any serious interest.

Gotta believe Anaheim's making a run at Vanek with the Penner move. That would be one scary top line with him on it.

Agreed- but it shows the market's softer than anticipated. If they can snag someone like Nikitin for anything less than a 2015 2nd that would be a great pickup.

I like Penner for a 4th. Washington has to be moving some more parts today/tomorrow... They also need to clear some cap space. Their current lines were:

Laich-Backstrom-Ovechkin
Erat-Johansson-Brouwer
Chimera-Fehr-Ward
Deschamps/Volpatti-Beagle-Wilson

Add in Penner and someone has to go already (Erat?). Grabovski is currently hurt, and Kuznetsov may be coming over. Erat and Neuvirth certainly have to be available.

I am hearing NYR and Ryan Callahan are inching towards a contract agreement but they're not there...yet. #TSN #Tradecentre

I'm hearing Kuznetsov is coming as soon as his last KHL game is done (today).

So, 4th for Robidas...guess that's a "no" on a 2nd for Meszaros?

And after the Wild getting Bryzgalov, WFAN updates it's earlier story.

What contender needs a rental at this point? Especially for Brodeur/Halak. How many teams would they really upgrade? The only place that really makes sense is Montreal if Price is really hurt. Brodeur and Halak each have an obvious connection to Montreal.

I don't see how they can acquire Vanek and an impact Dman without trading away one of those other 11 forwards.

im guessing teams would be asking about Reilly Smith in deals for players of Vanek's value

Edit: which I doubt the Bruins would probably do, unless they could get him to re-sign, but I would guess they start there.

Not super pumped about this rumor. Significant salary would have to go the other way, too. (Erat? Doesn't make a ton of sense.)

Man, what about Vanek and McDonald in a package deal?

Anders Nilsson/Kevin Poulin don't seem to be the future on Long Island. Subban as a centerpiece would be a pretty seamless fit going the other way with the Isles keeping some of Vanek's salary.

IMO Travis Hamonic would be a better fit than MacDonald, but that's likely a pipe-dream. He's in year 1 of a 7 year, $3.857m AAV deal.

Andy Brickley's potty mouth
Ever since Chiarelli took over, these deadlines have become a lot of fun. In the old days, I used to wish that these days would hurry up and get over so the Bruins wouldn't do something dumb.

Thanks Pete Chia.

Geez, that's pretty cheap.  What do you think Vanek will go for?

I'd guess a 1st, 3rd, and an A-level prospect. So, for the Bruins, I'd bet they want a 1st, 3rd and Koko or something like that.

Vanek would be addition by virtue of preventing him from going to another team where he can light up the Bruins, but I don't think either him or Gaborik will come to Boston.

I bet Chiarelli is harassing Ottawa though over Phillips. I still expect him to be moved, and the Bruins high on the list of probabilities, if not at the top.

This is literally the one time of year that I check out HF just to see the whining every time a trade is made and "OMGZ CHIA COULDN'T BEAT THAT???" and suddenly the first place Bruins are basically destitute despite being top 5 in GF, top 5 in GA and playing in front of the best goalie in the world. I love it.

The 2nd in 2015 is pretty valuable, very deep draft - I'm doubtful that he's a 2nd+3rd rounder-worth of an upgrade over Bartkowski for the B's.

For the Flyers though, especially if they can recoup that 2nd by way of moving Meszaros, it's worth it.

MacDonald is likely a rental, so I don't know if it's that cheap. I'm not sure MacDonald is a guy you go all in for.

Vanek may be, but I still wouldn't want to give up much more than a first for any rental. I just don't think it's good value.

As PSK mentioned, Malcolm Subban would be of big interest to the Isles. They're in desperate need of a long term option in net. Then they probably want a 1st round pick either this year or next to make up for the one they sent to Buffalo in the original Vanek trade. I think if you put that on the table as the base of the deal, the Isles would listen.

After that you have to figure out how to balance the salary so the Bruins fit him in. It would've been easier to expand the deal and include MacDonald, but that ship has obviously sailed. It's a little trickier now since the Bruins have to keep Bartkowski.

@TSNBobMcKenzie Brad Boyes agrees to terms on 2 year deal with FLA. $2.625M AAV.

Not so much a trade news item, but it does take Brad Boyes off the market, which I do find relevant. I heard whispers of the Pens earlier, so this is good to hear.

Minnesota's Niklas Backstrom shut down for the season. With Harding out with his MS complications, it will be Kuemper and Bryz the rest of the way it seems.

Fuckin' right! Screw Shea Weber...

I don't hate this deal, and he's cheap cap-wise, but the Flyers already have a bunch of OK d-men that they can swap in and out and nobody really notices. The only thing that really makes me like this is if MacDonald played a lot with Streit when he was there, because the Grossmann-Streit pairing has been pretty brutal. Not sure if there's a way to look at that sort of thing though.

Also I can't really believe Minnesota...really, Bryzgalov? Good move for Edmonton though, turn a guy they got for free into a 4th. Like it matters, they don't exactly mine for gold on draft day, with them it's been #1 pick or bust, their later round picks never even crack the NHL generally.
