Johnson will probably be DFA.

And once he passes through unclaimed, he can replace WMB at Pawtucket for their IL stretch run.

Boras really wanted Drew in a pennant race and really wanted Bogaerts at short so this works for him.

Drew hit .170 for us, I will be shocked if he doesn't hit double that for them. That's how this season is going.

He'll outhit Kelly Johnson against RH pitching and play better infield defense, which is all the Yankees care about.  Also, they get to see him up close in their clubhouse before they sign him to play shortstop for the next three seasons.

I actually think the Yankees get the better end of this, if they move Jeter off SS. That would be amazing.

2004 would have been an ideal time for the Yankees to move Jeter off SS. Now, in the last months of his career? While it makes baseball sense, it doesn't make narrative sense.

There is a bettter chance of a John Sterling-Suzyn Waldman porn flick surfacing than there is of Derek Jeter not playing most of the remainder of the season at SS for the Yankees.

So like do we DFA Kelly now?

What purpose does he serve? With Craig and Cespedes, Holt is back to being an infielder only, so they move him to third, Bogaerts to short and that leaves no room for Johnson, really. Am I miscounting?

OF: Cespedes, JBJ, Victorino, Craig, Nava
IF: Holt, Bogaerts, Pedroia, Napoli, Vazquez, Ross, Ortiz

That's 12, so I guess they could keep him as a bench super sub and go with 12 pitchers.

Edit: Forgot Carp. One of the two will be DFA'd.

Sox sending money. Heh.

So to summarize, the Sox spent $10 million on Drew to A) rush him back, B) watch him do nothing, C) lose the chance to test Bogaerts at SS for a full season of reps, D) trade him to the Yankees with money!!! for nothing in return.

Don't worry, guys. I don't plan on being any more productive at the plate over there than I was here.

Sorry to see you go, Stephen. I had faith that your bat would come around sooner or later. You'll love hitting in the Bidet.

Middlebrooks is returning to play 3B.  Holt remains the super-sub.

If it's less than they would have paid Drew the rest of the year, it's a win.
Oh, I know. Even if the amount turns out to be less than the cost of a bag of balls, it just struck me as funny.

The real comedy comes from the entire 2014 Drew saga. Epic saga.

I might rather watch the former than watch Jeter try to play SS any more.

(OK, maybe not)

Well actually they probably spent significantly less than $10M, since they don't have to pay the rest of his deal and are sending "minimal money".

The number of guys who have been on the same roster as Jeter and are much better SS but don't actually play SS is comical.  I hope Stephen at least gets a nice gift basket.

2014 in a nutshell. The turd on the vomit sundae will come when Drew gets big hits to help the Yankees to the playoffs.
It would have been much better to just bench him for the rest of the season and put him on waivers to see if anyone claimed him.

The Giants are playing Joe Panik and Dan Uggla at second and they wouldn't give up anything of more value than Kelly Johnson for Drew?  This is really curious.  I wonder if teams were wary of trading for him without being able to consult with him about playing second.

So the Sox get Drew out of Bogaerts/Middlebrooks way and save ~$3-4M in the process?  Works for me.

So, help me, I am spinning: Carp and Johnson will be DFAd tomorrow?

It might depend on when they're calling up Middlebrooks.
