Should the Sox sign a right handed bat? If so, who?

If the Sox could pick anyone from the remaining RH hitting free agents, which would you choose?

  • Tommy Pham: Mediocre glove in LF that's still better than Yoshida (vs LHP .792 in 23' /837 OPS).

Miami, I watched him from the normal outfield camera during a game. Then I saw a special featuring Refsnyder. The cameraman also showed a couple of hitters besides Ref, such as Devers and O'Neill. The shot was from the 1st base dugout or close to that.

JD Martinez for example takes a long smooth half swing in his follow through while eyeing the pitcher before the pitch, as does Devers as a lefty. But O'Neill does these little short motions with his feet and ankles, working up to his waist. Almost like a golfer, getting ready to putt and getting his feet in order. Except he's still doing a little dance with his feet. Really hit me as quite a bit unusual, haven't seen anyone do that after stepping to the plate. His most recent injuries - 2023= were knees, feet, hammies. I'm not a trainer or doc, so don't follow his routine in that.

It all seems pretty low impact compared to what an outfielder would encounter in the field.

Right shoulder impingement (IL 5/20/22-6/7/22)
Left hamstring strain (IL 6/20/22-7/13/22) running the bases
Left hamstring strain (IL 9/17/22-10/6/22)

2021 injuries:
Right groin strain (IL 4/11/21-4/23/21) swinging the bat
Left middle finger fracture (IL 5/18/21-5/27/21) jammed sliding into 2B

Nothing repeated except the hammy in 2022. Likely didn't heal properly the first time. Otherwise that reads more like a snake-bit player than someone whose physical attributes/style or work-out habits make him more susceptible to injury than other players.

I don’t have it in front of me, but he told one of the beat reporters that after his back strain he’s adjusted/eased his weight room routine with an eye to avoiding injury.

That Chapman contract (3/&54 million) is a great deal for SF. If the Sox had bit on something similar they’d be looking at a ridiculous upgrade to their 3b defense - from the 2nd worst fielder (at all positions) of the last seven years (per DRS) to the 2nd best fielder at all positions. From far and away the worst 3rd baseman of that period to far and away the best 3rd baseman (by all defensive indicators). I know that the Sox’s primary concern isn’t their 2024 record, but if it was there probably wasn’t another move they could have still made that would have more improved this team’s performance this season -certainly not for that price at least.

I would be watching Elehuris Montero and Nelson Velazquez on the Rockies and KC. Velazquez still has an option but Elehuris is out of options. Maybe trading Mata for one of them makes sense though I think KC would want more for Nelson.
