Looks like the struggling Workman is moving to the back of the line among future SP candidates. I've always felt he'd be a better long-term fit in the bullpen anyway.

John Farrell tells MLB Network Ranaudo will start tomorrow, with Escobar sent down.

That certainly makes me a lot more excited about the game tomorrow, if nothing else.  I still like the possibility of Workman in the rotation, but just as a high-floor/low-ceiling #5, and even then he might be better as a swing man, to take spot starts when someone inevitably gets injured.

I'd like to know why Steven Wright doesn't get a shot, as it seems like he's earning it.  2.70 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 58K, 18BB

The club probably wants to see which of their highest-ceiling arms will figure into their 2015 plans, which might need more minor league seasoning, and which will be dealt away to fill other team needs. Wright's not a high-ceiling arm.

He turns 30 in less than 3 weeks and has only one minor league option left. Wright also pitched for the Sox in several call-ups last year, so they've got a pretty good idea what they have with him. Thanks to the Tim Wakefield experience, the front office also knows that even the best knuckleball pitchers with the most repeatable grips, arm slots & deliveries are still going to be at the mercy of the elements (temperature, humidity, air currents, etc.) when it comes to how the ball floats & flutters in the absence of any spin or rotation.

As good as Wright's numbers have been this year in AAA, his ceiling is still a bottom-of-the-rotation starter who can double as an innings-eating swingman. In other words, Tim Wakefield. That's valuable for sure, but not nearly as valuable as what three-pitch guys like Ranaudo, Webster or Escobar could produce as starters or fetch in a trade. I still expect Wright to be in Boston's plans for next year, but he'll likely be riding the Pawtucket shuttle as needed.
