The other option is to release him and immediately re-sign him to a minor league contract, to avoid paying him the 100k. If Pawtucket is his best opportunity, which it probably is, I don't think paying him the 100k is necessary, he would probably re-sign with the Red Sox and willingly go to Pawtucket.

He's already signed to a minor league contract, and a new deal would still include the opt-out in June.  So they'd be releasing and re-signing to save $100K.  I have to think a move like that would probably result in Quintero telling them to shove it and seeking employment elsewhere.  There's no reason to cheap out on $100K that doesn't count against the major league payroll anyway.

Boston looks like a worse bet now than when he signed that contract. If he had the leverage then to insist on the $100k, I can't see him waiving it now -- especially when you consider what the FO even asking him to waive it would say about their assessment of his chances to contribute here.

Indeed. And everything we know of this ownership and FO argues against the idea that they would see the bad karma and PR of this gambit as worth the kind of organizational chump change it would save.

The differences are trivial..  My problem with your points are that you keep saying I was "guaranteeing" he would be ready when I have never once said or inferred that anywhere and it's puzzling where you are getting that.  By "ready" I mean able to play major league baseball and an estimate of when I think the Red Sox will call him up, not hit the ground running as an all-star and hitting his ceiling.  How can I possibly guarantee they will call him up and how can you guarantee the contrary?
Please go back and read the first post I made that you responded to. Then read your response.

If an organization with the financial resources of the Boston Red Sox wanted to cut me and resign me to avoid paying me a hundred grand, I'm pretty sure I would tell them to go to hell.

That's particularly true when you consider that his job in AAA is to back up the catcher of the future.

There's no guarantee Swihart is going to be ready at all this season so adjusting playing time based on that assumption would be foolish.

Disagree.
This is what I was talking about.

I'm moving on as well.

Especially for a guy on the downside of his career and from South America. $100k is a lot of money in the USA but even more down there

This means definite Tommy John for Clay, right?

Considering he hasn't gotten his second opinion from Andrews yet, and he was throwing over the weekend, I'm gonna go ahead and say this has nothing to do with Buchholz.

Agree. They are keeping Buchholz personal catcher when he flat out stinks. Swihart needs to play, this team is out of it and he should get the majority of the starts down the stretch.

More to the point they have to figure out what to do with Nava as his rehab is about to end. There's probably no room at the inn - definitely with 3 catchers on the roster - and debatable with only two.

Sandy, you hitched your wagon to the wrong pitcher :)

Dude has to have one of the best throwing arms in baseball. Nothing there other than that though. Remarkable futility at the plate.

We also have 15 games in the next 14 days including 3 flights (to Hou, Det, and Bos) to get back home. This allows some flexibility it adding/subtracting backend pitching when needed.

I'd bet there's a wink-wink agreement that the team will bring him back once Buchholz returns.

Doubtful of that too.  Maybe he gets through waivers and they outright him to Pawtucket, maybe they let him walk away, but there's no wink-wink, you still have a job here deal with a back-up catcher OPSing .438 (.488 career).  Buchholz threw just as well to past catchers as he did to Leon, he'll get by without his binky in the future.

My guess is all the "wink-wink" and woe is Buchholz discussion is misguided, as I feel there's like a pretty good chance Leon passes through waivers.

Sandy Leon is only 26. I wouldn't have been surprised if if you'd said that he was 36

Right. I think Leon easily passes through waivers, but why would they bring him back unless it's to go to AAA? Where would he play? Swihart is the future an Hannigan is a fine backup catcher.

I'd bet there is essentially zero chance there is any such agreement.
Leon is very replaceable and there would be no reason for such an agreement. Buch has thrown to plenty of other catchers, when Leon is on the team sure let him be a personal catcher but there is no chance you go out of your way to have him on your team.

Sandy Leon is not good.

I'm not ready to discuss the 2016 catching situation, I'm just happy that Sandy Leon will not be part of the discussion. I'm trying to forget he ever put on a uniform.

So argue Swihart v Vazquez v Hannigan amongst yourselves. I'm going to stay drunk on the Sandy Leon DFA news for a while.
