At a time when the 49ers are trying to shoot down rumors regarding a possible trade of quarterback Colin Kaepernick, the 49ers soon will have another significant issue to deal with.

Some very surprising news related to the 49ers is coming, likely later today, regarding a key player on the team who won’t be on the team in 2015.  A formal announcement is expected on Tuesday.

That’s all we can say for now.  But when it happens, you’ll be shocked — even though you’re now duly braced to be shocked.

Could be Willis, Aldon Smith, Kap, or Davis. I guess we will find out.

Way to get those clicks, but PFT seems sure.

So if it's not Kap, who could be the mystery guy other than Brooks, Smith, Willis or Staley? And if "shock" is the bar, who could it really be other than Willis or Staley. And barring an illness, it sure as hell isn't Staley unless they have lost their minds.

Pretty clearly Frank Gore leaving the organization

This is pretty common knowledge at this point.  Wouldn't be reported as a blind item.

PFT? I assume the release will be something like:

Sources in San Francisco indicate that deflated balls were used in the AFCCG.

Could be a front office thing. Maybe they fired their new head coach and are bringing Harbaugh back.

Harbaugh may be a playa, I don't know, but he's not a player.

Probably not Aldon Smith as he just re-did his deal.
That would qualify it as a shocker though. Smith is my guess.

FWIW, PFT had this scoop re: Aldon Smith on 3/7:

Smith’s agent, Doug Hendrickson, told Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com earlier this week that the 49ers didn’t say, ‘”If you don’t do this, you’re cut.'”  The 49ers apparently didn’t need to verbalize their intentions.

Per a league source, the 49ers would have released Smith in lieu of allowing his fifth-year base salary to become fully guaranteed.  According to the source, Smith wasn’t going to get on the open market a contract similar to the revised deal he signed.

It’s not even a true $9.754 million base deal.  Of that amount, $2 million is tied to incentives, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com.  To get the full $9.754 million, Smith must participate in at least half the defensive snaps this year or notch at least eight sacks.

If that's the case he has had a great career. Still young enough where he could play in 2016 and still be elite.

Damn, losing Gore yesterday and then Willis, and Justin Smith is rumored to be retiring too.  The three of them have been the heart and soul of the team for nearly a decade.

Willis retiring is a huge blow.  He struggled with injuries last season but he was probably the best MLB in the league for about five or six years, a legit HoF-level player.  Also a team captain and big locker room presence.  He will not easily be replaced.

This is possibly going to be a last place team out in the NFC West.
Would almost be a shock for them to finish anywhere else.

God, they are the Texas Rangers of the NFL. They came, what, 8 yards from winning the Super Bowl in the 2012 season? And another few yards from going back in 2013? And now...

Honestly, it shows you how incredible the Patriots are.  Every great team in the past 15 years has had to go through some real bumps during a rebuilding process.  Every one of them.  Without exception.

Well.  Except the Patriots.  Who just became the youngest team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl.  Reloading for Super Bowl runs every few years.  With nary a slip-up.  The worst they got was 9-7 and a tie for the division title (2002).  It's incredible.

What a total cluster fuck this offseason has been. At least Baalke will get his due next year when they finish at 6-10.
