That is a big time loss. Wouldn't shock me to see him head to Houston. He should have gotten the DC nod over Patricia in my view.

It's important to know if he's choosing not to come back, or if this is BB's choice.

Pepper Johnson is leaving the Patriots organization and here is a statement from him:

“Today marks a new day for me. Today is a new day full of promise and hope. It is also a day to reflect, as I embark upon a new journey. Today is the first day in 13 years that I am not a part of the New England Patriots, although I will always be a Patriot in my heart. Today also marks the first day in 26 years that I am not working in some capacity with one of greatest head coaches of all time, as well as my friend, Bill Belichick.

“Football is my life. From putting my body on the line, my hand in the dirt, to teaching others to do the same, this will continue for me. ... I have big dreams and goals and they all involve football. So as I soak in this new day and embark on wherever my new path takes me, I shall embrace this new chapter in my life.

“I thank the entire New England Patriot organization for the last 13 years of my life. I am proud of all the things we have accomplished. The Kraft family is one of a kind and I will always be grateful to them and hold them in the highest regard. Bill Belichick and I have been working together in some capacity for 26 years and I am who I am because of it. To have five Super Bowl rings (two as a player, three as a coach) and all of them with Bill has been a blessing. I could never have asked for a better coach/boss/friend in those 26 years. Thanks for always supporting me and I know Bill will continue to support me no matter what.

“Thank you New England Patriot fans; I will miss you the most.”

Honestly how could you make that judgment one way or another?

The most popular guy on the team is always the backup QB....or the backup DC in this case, I guess.

Pepper has done a great job with the linebackers this year. Both Hightower and Collins took a step forward at the end of the year, even though they both were publicly flogged throughout the beginning of the season (and especially around here). They were two of the best players on the field Sunday.

I didn't realize he had been on this staff as long as Belichick had. Pepper along with Dante Scarnecchia, and Ivan Fears (both there before BB) are the only three coaches that had been with Bill all 13 years. He'll be missed.

The fact that he's been on the staff so long and hasn't moved up suggests that BB doesn't think he can be a DC.  In light of that, I think it makes sense he's moving -- he's too young to settle into a perma-assistant role like Scarnecchia. I'll be curious to see how things go in his next landing spot.

Yeah if you look at that 2003 defensive coaching squad every one of them have moved onto to something bigger.

Pepper does have the least amount of experience of that crew, but you'd think after 12 years he'd have a shot for DC. I'm guessing he wasn't happy about Patricia getting the call over him.

So the inferrence on the part of the tweeter (Reiss? sorry, I don't use Twitter) is that Schiano or Schwartz will, at best, look to be assistant DCs in 2014? That smells funny since I thought I saw Schiano was up for Cincy's DC position.

Shalise was just throwing out names.  I think you're right that both of those guys should be able to find better positions in 2014.

Could be a one year landing between other gigs thing, like when we had Capers for a year.

Reads threads backwards
Quit, quite amicably according to this article. Article indicates his "hopes and dreams are still all about football." That could mean a lot besides coaching in the NFL. It will be interesting to see what his next move will be. I will always remember pepper as the guy in the NFL Films version of the 2001 SB story who said that he thought they had knocked Kurt Warner unconscious.

This is where I am at.  When Patricia was named DC, Pepper had been here much longer and Pepper was at the assistant level starting in 2001 whereas Patricia didnt reach that level until 2006.  It seems Bill felt Pepper had reached his potential.

Yeah, you're right.  Now I want to watch that again.

Does anyone remember reading the story about the Superbowl where late in the game when the Pats defense couldnt stop the Rams and Romeo calmly gathered the defense and said 'I am out of ideas to stop them, does anyone have any?'  I wish they had that on tape, those interactions must have been fascinating.

Dave Deguglielmo, formerly of the Jets and Maryland (6 days), is named new o-line coach.

Really strange hire.  Local guy, Jets cast-off.  Just accepted the job at MD.  So what is Dabol going to be doing then?  So many questions.....

Yeah that's not good news at all.  I wish he'd have hung in there until Brady retires anyway.

The OL has had its share of disappointments in the playoffs, but it was really convenient to be able to churn out a starting lineman or two from the scrap heap every year and have all the high pick OL turn out fine.  Definitely adds more risk to the offseason.

This guy's the maniac from the Jets that bitched about the decision to play Ducasse being made "high above him" and that Wayne Hunter would start until someone shot him.  He got fired after a year.

Wish you hadnt told me that.

EDIT: dont think the sky is falling or anything, and the OL has had its share of playoff failures, but sure was nice to be able to hit on every high OL pick and consistently take guys off the scrap heap and turn them into serviceable to good linemen on the cheap.  All indications are Dante was a big part of that.  Adds more risk to next year's team.

Shot the OL coach, not hunter by the way.

They traded Hunter by the end of training camp so something obviously changed.

Well at least he has a similar personality to Dante.

Fuck all you guys, I'm going to Sons of Jim Zorn.

Edit: to get to the point

"If we were first in the league, it wouldn't be the offensive line's [doing]," he said. "But we're 30th in the league, and it's definitely on the offensive line. Every sack is mine, every sack is theirs. If the running game isn't going well, doesn't matter who's carrying the ball, doesn't matter why -- it goes on them. Could be holes as big as this room, doesn't matter. You sit in the chair down the street [with the Giants], see the same thing going on -- they got a reputation for one thing, we have a reputation for another thing. I'll leave my evaluation to the people that control my employment. You guys will write whatever you want anyway."

Our new line coach to reporters when he was the Jets' oline coach.

He just might need some media training.

EDIT: As a question of substance the Jets apparently had the league's third best o-line per PFF (I know, I know) when degoogs was coaching them, and presumably the Pats thought his line was well-coached based in part on playing them twice, so there's a chance we're getting a halfway decent coach who just got pushed out for political reasons.

I understand its a big loss but let's not all go jumping off the Tobin. I would imagine being a coach on the BB staff is a pretty plum assignment, you know the head guy isn't going anywhere for awhile, so you can have a little job security. I bet Bill had his pick of coaches, let's give the new guy a chance.
