October Game Thread

I've never understood it, but Buck has always been a media favorite. Maybe it's because he's "unafraid to go with his gut" or that he "plays the game the right way" or some such nonsense. Of course, these "brave" managers are always revealed to be thin-skinned cowards when one of their "gut feel" decisions blows up in their face.

Could not happen to a nicer guy...
I'm not a fan, but his decision to stick with Brach and O'Day earlier worked out brilliantly. Had he finally pulled the string with Britton it would have been an impeccably managed game. I have no idea why he choked away that last part.

It's all the more strange because Showalter had used Britton for 1+ innings 6 times this year, so it wasn't always a "only in save situation" use.
Looks like 4 of those 6 appearances of 1+ IP were, in fact, save situations. But to your point, he brought Britton into a tie game on the road (at Toronto!) on July 31 and he ended up pitching the 9th and 10th innings of a game that the Orioles eventually won in 12.

He had six days rest before that one, though, and presumably Buck wanted to get him into that one no matter what.

Going with Brach and O'Day when he had Britton ready was a poor decision. The fact that it didn't cost him does not change that.

He got what he deserves and I feel warm all over as I write those words.

Because Bucky is absurdly overrated as a manager, always has been. In between managerial stints he was an analyst on TV. The media adores him (especially ESPN). He is "One of them." He is overrated. Last night people finally realised the Emperor's clothes suck.

It's about time.

Sorry I have to disagree strongly.

Pedro after 100 pitches in 2003 was not a HOF pitcher, he was a below average pitcher. It was indefensible as is Buck's move. The silver lining to Grady, is that they canned him and we got Tito.

When Buck left him in I knew, just as I knew when Grady walked away, the game was lost. Now I have to listen to stupid Jays fans for at least another week.
Seriously. Let's not retrofit some absence of dumbfuckery onto Grady that isn't there. It was indefensibly stupid to leave Pedro in as long as he did. Nothing Buck Schowalter does in 2016 can take away how impossibly incompetent Grady Little was in 2003.

That said, MAN, THAT WAS FUCKING STUPID!!!! Like, "I still can't believe it really happened" stupid. Buck will never live that down, and I love it.

He simply gambled and lost. His confidence in his offense that they could score one run and he would get Britton in to close the deal didn't work. He could have used Britton in the 9th and 10th effectively and then if the O's offense doesn't score and the other pen arms give it up ala Jimenez, it's over. He was in a no win situation on the road.

man, rough thread. all this '03 talk and an '86 reference...

Who are you guys rooting for tonight? I am Mets all the way, I have several close friends that are die hard Mets fans.
Giants. Their even-year devil magic is the only thing stopping the Cubs.

I have a Mets fan friend who, even after the Sox winning in '04, '07 and 13, still brings up '86. Fuck the Mets, go Giants!
That's a classic Mets fan for you; still bringing up 1986 and when you tell him how lucky they were to win it and how it took a miracle of epic proportions, he'll babble about how the Mets won 108 games that year and were the better team, so they should have won it.

That 1986 team was a bunch of woman chasing, pill popping boozebags, they won squat after 1986.

I think he thought he could steal a couple of outs with 9-1-2 coming up. It was a big gamble, he didn't need to take it, and he lost spectacularly.

I've seen Tito and Farrell do this in the regular season. But not in a post-season game and especially not in an elimination game.

My friend from college is a huge Mets fan who will root for the Sox if it doesn't involve the Mets following the enemy of my enemy is my friend theory. According to him true Mets fans despise the Yankees so I can get behind rooting for the Mets tonight.

I'm here and have virtually zero vested interest in the outcome. Hoping for a classic.
