I don't like the NFL's flag-humping in general. But man, of all weeks. Don't put Francis Key in this.

It's the 200th birthday of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Which has literally zero to do with a football game, which is my point.

Complaining about the national anthem at football games (or any sporting event) seems like an argument that won't really get anywhere because it's just not ever going to change.

EDIT: I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but it just seems like tilting at windmills.

Yup.  You can see him in the top left, right next to the ref.

Dollar said:
You can tell on the replay that the ref didn't see Mornhinweg, he only called for the timeout when Sheldon Richardson yelled it in the ref's ear.

edit:  Oh wait.

The ref looks over at Mornihnweg, and doesn't signal anything because it's not the head coach.

Then he hears time-out in his ear, where Rex Ryan was just standing, and signals for a time-out because he assumed it was Ryan calling it.

The Sunday night football game is seen by more people than any TV program. If the NFL didn't make a big deal of the anthem's 200th anniversary, given the audience and the wekk of bad press, they'd be criticized even more

Really? I had no clue about the 200th anniversary. It is what it is and I'm not surprised but my wife and I both commented on how the NFL is wrapping itself in the flag today and it s more pathetic than it typically is.

I'm surprised NBC had Tafoya report on Ray McDonald playing tonight. I'm shocked they ran Jed York's tone-deaf statement and followed it with Harbaugh's "zero tolerance" hypocrisy. Bravo, NBC.

I am completely unsurprised that an organization employing a Harbaugh has a credibility and integrity deficiency. Even Jerry "Humanitarian of the Year" Richardson figured this out and did the right thing. Not the 49ers. Nope, they just keep on putting players on the field who have no business being on the field and making excuses for their blatant lack of a functioning moral compass.

Making the Ravens look good, Niners management. Keep up the good work.

Is it the NFL doing it, or the stations giving it more airtime? It was 9/11 a few days ago.

This is where I think Rex fails as a head coach. He should know that there is an issue with the offense (whatever Marty sees) and be calling the timeout himself.

Instead he is just a passenger with the offense and doesn't have the ability to make impact decisions/correct issues when the time calls for it.

Forget for a second that the play ended in a TD. What about if the play ends in a sack or incompletion because of the perceived issue. Marty tried to call timeout but the ref won't accept his request and does not hear SR behind him? This is incompetent coaching because of his ignorance/failure to be involved in the offense.

Does this mean we can finally retire the song and pick a good one, like America the Beautiful or something better than a poem put to an Irish drinking song.

I think if the Bears signed Champ Bailey, their defense would get younger.  That's a bunch of old fuckers.
I don't want to imply the Bears are old but Gary Fencik just entered when they went to the nickel.

Vernon Davis got up just fine, but that last open-field tackle on him after the screen pass was pretty much a mirror image of the Gronk hit. Right into his knee. If he'd been planted, he'd be fucked.

Has to be incomplete right?

Edit: good grief that was 100% obvious the ball is spinning to show the receiver doesn't have control and Collinsworth is chuckling at the ruling? Wtf!!

i personally thought catch. just because the ball spins in your grip when a defender punches it doesn't mean you don't have it. to me he bobbled it, had it, possessed it through the defender's punch and then went out of bounds.

If the ball is spinning in your hands by definition you don't have control.

Once it stopped spinning and the receiver had control he could only get one foot down.

I know the rule and all but how can you catch the football (i.e. it never touches the ground), get both feet in bounds, and then have someone say you didn't catch the ball?

Isn't the definition of the word catch "intercept and hold (something that has been thrown, propelled, or dropped)"?

I thought catch too. It spun a bit after the punch but after he pulled it down there was never any question he was controlling the ball.

Serious question: have 50% of the plays this game (including special teams) had one or more flags or a review? If you forced me to guess I'd go with 60%. Crazy.

does the rule say if the ball shifts at all when hit that you don't have control?

This is how I feel about every game.  Way more offensive illegal contact this year, as well as OPI.

So have they come up with a dumb nickname for the new stadium yet?  It looks like a giant D from the overhead shots.  Or would they call it "The Dungaree" or something like that?

They've been calling it "The Field of Jeans"
Which is actually kinda funny

This is Carl Cheffers, the same guy who threw a million flags in the Pats-Panthers preseason game.  It's fucking ridiculous.

It's because he didn't catch the ball per the definition of possession, complete and continuous control of the ball, while having both feet inbounds. The ball made a half revolution in the players arms which isn't considered possession. Once the ball stops spinning the player by definition has control but didn't get his second foot down once he gained control.

i love frank gore. please tell me he hasn't ever done anything truly shitty like 90% of the NFL.

He committed one of the most obscene, indecent acts the NFL has ever seen, and was fined accordingly.

Frank Gore's efforts in the San Francisco 49ers' NFC Championship Game victory over the Atlanta Falcons didn't go unnoticed by the NFL, which decided he wore his socks last Sunday a little too low to its liking.

The running back was fined $10,500 on Wednesday for wearing his socks too low in the game, marking the second time he has been fined this season.

"Yeah, I'll be cool. It's all good," Gore said Wednesday. "I was wrong. Next time, I'll do better.

I know.  I guess I just miss the days when sports were simple.

A catch was a catch. You could tackle a QB. etc.  You could watch sports and not have to think.
