Why not just make everything subject to expedited review and apply a “clear and obvious” standard? Reviewing some things and not others just creates subjective assessments on what’s important to determining a game and what’s not when that’s not really how the game works. Eventually we’ll end up with the Belichick proposal where everything is also subject to a coach’s challenge too.

Because they don’t want people wondering why this or that play, including and especially things like offensive holding or illegal formation calls/non-calls, wasn’t subject to a review. They throw around terms like ‘judgment call’ to snow people. Every call is a judgment call; some are just harder to judge than others, and arguably the hardest plays to judge - the ones they generally try not to subject to review - are the ones they should be reviewing.

There isn’t sound internal logic to which plays are subject to review or not. Hell, delay of game isn’t subject to review!

My impression is they try to balance several objectives: minimize how much official, visible scrutiny the refs are subject to; protect against a slower pace of play; and see what the public/the teams will accept as the scope of calls subject to review at any given time. I’m all for BB’s idea, all that being said.

I suspect @CFP_Rules has more informed thoughts on this.

Apple drops out of Sunday Ticket negotiations, leaving Amazon and Google as the remaining bidders. Amazon feels like it would be the front runner given that they already have the TNF package. If this gets rolled into the existing Prime subscription, big win for existing customers.
I doubt it’s free with Prime but that’d be amazing. Having NFL Sunday Ticket on a dish company makes no sense at this point. Get it streaming and everyone now has the option

Yeah, there’s no way they include RZ with a prime membership. It will be an up charge, just like seemingly 3/4 of their movies. But agree they are probably the best equipped and most logical choice between the two.

Red Zone is available with any cable system. Northeast steered this in the wrong direction.

They are talking about the NFL Sunday Ticket. And I would bet that if Amazon got the rights, it would absolutely be an add on.

Yes, brain fart by me. Meant Sunday ticket. And agree, it would be a significant add on charge.
Right now, Direct TV charges 400 bucks for the Sunday Ticket online. It's pricey and the service kind of sucks. No matter who gets it, it will be better, no doubt.

If Amazon got the rights, my bet is that it would be less than 400 but not far from it. They can't pay for this package and just offer the service to prime members when an add on fee would generate a ton of revenue.

Of course, they got Thursday night football and that's a prime offering.

whoa, I didn’t know it was up to 4 bills. That’s a lot of bread. I would pay if I lived out of market but that’s a lot.

Wow I had no idea it was $400. That seems like a ton - feel like that’s what I pay for Hulu, Disney, HBO and Netflix.

And the service is lousy, it is literally 90 seconds behind live TV and about 15-20 seconds behind something like YouTubeTV.

You can't watch a Sunday Ticket online game and watch Red Zone. 90 seconds is an eternity in a football game.

Absolutely. They charge add on fees for innocuous shit, that’s hard to imagine any big demand for. For arguably the premier sports package, outside of the primary NFL
contact itself? They’re going to capitalize as much as they possibly can.

I agree the delay sucks but otherwise I like the interface. It’s responsive and quick, unlike Amazon.

Wonder if dvr capability would be part of an Amazon or Google package. That’s my biggest beef with DTV.

No they haven’t. Contracts often have offset language so the first example they use, Matt Rhule, is incorrect given he was making $8.6M AAV and Nebraska signed him for $9.3M AAV. I’m sure it doesn’t work 1:1 but they aren’t paying him the full $60M remaining.

Old friend JC Jackson arrested for a 'non-violent family issue'.

Chargers cornerback J.C. Jackson was arrested and booked at the Bristol County Jail and House of Corrections in Massachusetts Monday.

Boston 25 News reports, via a spokesperson for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office, that Jackson was booked on Monday afternoon for a “family issue” after an appearance in probate court. The nature of the issue is unknown, but the spokesperson said that it is non-violent.

Pro bowl rosters have been announced and Judon is the only Pats’ player to make it.

My question is… why announce it now? There’s still three weeks left or the season. All kinds of things can happen. Obviously Mahomes is making it no matter what. But some votes were really close and three weeks’ worth of play could change a lot. What’s the harm in waiting til the regular season is actually over? Why vote and announce with 18% of the season still to play?

Makes no sense to me.

Me neither. They should just scrap the whole thing and publicize the all-pro and individual positional honors more.

The Pro Bowl is by far the silliest and least interesting and least watchable of any all star game. And there is no good reason to fix any of it, so agree it could be scrapped.

But I’m not about to begrudge the players a paid winter vacation to Hawaii either, so may as well let it continue.

They don’t even go to Hawaii anymore, to boot, at least since 2015. It’s instead been hosted by Orlando or Vegas.

And this year they’re scrapping any pretense of a tackle football game; they’ll be playing some form of flag football.

But it isn’t “wholly” unimportant.

First, some players have bonuses or escalators in their contracts for making the pro bowl.

Second, players do make a little extra money for being a pro bowler.

Third, when evaluating a players HOF chances, numbers of pro bowls are factored into the equation, at least in the minds of some HOF voters.

I read you can subscribe to it on YouTube or as an add on for YouTube TV. Meaning you won’t have to be a YTTV subscriber to get the ticket.
I read that as well. That is a bonus because you can get only the package and keep whatever other programming you have and it is also great for cord cutters.

Having said that, gone are the days when people called DirecTV to cancel the service in the hopes of getting a big discount on Sunday Ticket.

Gone are the days Direct TV will be in business in the future, I think.

From the WSJ:

“The deal with YouTube and the league’s agreement with Amazon’s Prime Video for Thursday night games are part of a strategy to attract younger fans, Mr. Goodell said. “It is a site where a lot of `Gen Z’ goes to get content,” he said, adding the NFL wants to “fish where the fish are.””

I love this quote. “The kids these days—they all use a series of tubes to access their entertainment needs….”

While I can't say I'm surprised that Sunday Ticket ended up with Google, Amazon or Apple, Google seemed like the least likely of the three. Good for them. This seems like a blow to Apple's plans for sports streaming.
From one of the articles I read, apple withdrew from the deal as they saw no sense in this add on.

From one source:

The tidbit comes from a Puck article about Bob Iger’s surprise return to Disney. According to author Dylan Byers, Apple recently said no to the NFL “not because they can’t afford [the package], but because they don’t see the logic.”

Also from the Puck piece was an interesting deal point I didn't know... the major broadcast partners (CBS/FOX/NBC/ABC) have veto power over pricing for the Sunday Ticket package, currently with a floor of the $300 DirecTV was charging. If that price were to drop too low, they could feel the effect in their super-expensive broadcast deals. So Apple couldn't provide Sunday ticket at a discount, and Amazon can't roll it into a Prime Subscription... which narrows their options to monetize it.
