What's the downside in drafting Collins and then just not having any negotiations with him until and unless he is totally cleared?

If he's proven clean, then you've got the "we believe in American justice, and with his having been cleared he's as entitled to earn a living as any one else" line.  I'd love to see Ray Lewis knock that.

If he's proven somehow connected or culpable, just eat the pick and move on.  The (perfectly good) explanation is "We take this seriously, so seriously we are willing to throw away a super-valuable fourth-round draft pick because we were never going to touch this kid if it were proven he was involved with this tragedy.  We never paid Collins a nickel, and never will."

It all makes sense unless you're a team that recently employed TE who likely committed at least three murders while cashing your paychecks.

Collins will be a good gamble for 31 other teams at some point on Day 3 but the Weedz situation makes this a total non-starter for the Patriots. I don't know why this is so difficult to understand.

Under the new-ish CBA, you have thirty-days to tender a four-year contract to everyone you draft, unless you waive them.  So, you'd be able to hold off up to 30 days, after which you'd need to tender or release the player.  You can then withdraw the tender, but the player can also sign, at any time (with some time caps far in the future, the details of which aren't that interesting).

Based on the rumor that they were willing to trade down from 32 to 51, I wonder if there was someone in that range they want and if they would now be looking to trade up from 64 (not that the Texans are specifically looking to trade down).

I'm not sure I would read anything into it other than it was the best offer on the table. They may have moved up some from 51.

Seen a few mentions of Abdullah, from Nebraska.

I definitely enjoyed watching him, but I would assume BB thinks RBs are way too fungible.
They took Vereen in the 2nd round in 2011. If the Pats think he is the best value, I could see them taking the kid.

But they took a kid last year, who didn't get on the field in James White, not to mention Gray, Bolden and Blount. They also traded for Cadet, and have and have Gaffney as well.

Gray and Blount are FAs after the year, and none of the others have done anything in the NFL. The group is OK for 2015, but it starts looking weak 2016-on.

I don't think Abdullah will be the guy, though: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/nfl-draft-scout/25092869/nfl-draft-fumble-rate-among-rb-prospects

Below is the career fumble rate (and hand size in inches) for running back prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft class:
35.4 -- Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska (8 5/8)
52.2 -- Kenny Hilliard, LSU (9 1/4)
54.4 -- Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin (9 3/4)
62.2 -- T.J. Yeldon, Alabama (9)
62.6 -- Jay Ajayi, Boise State (10)
63.2 -- Matt Jones, Florida (8 5/8)
72.3 -- Tevin Coleman, Indiana (8 5/8)
74.5 -- David Cobb, Minnesota (9 3/8)
77.5 -- David Johnson, Northern Iowa (9 5/8)
80.0 -- Javorius Allen, USC (9 3/8)
85.0 -- Duke Johnson, Miami (Fla.) (9 1/4)
87.3 -- Mike Davis, South Carolina (9 3/8)
91.5 -- Josh Robinson, Mississippi State (10 1/8)
92.7 -- Karlos Williams, Florida State (9 3/4)
123.2 -- Jeremy Langford, Michigan State (8 3/4)
125.0 -- Terrence Magee, LSU (9)
134.4 -- Zach Zenner, South Dakota State (9 5/8)
136.0 -- Cameron Artis-Payne, Auburn (8 7/8)
156.3 -- Dominique Brown, Louisville (9 1/2)
191.7 -- Todd Gurley, Georgia (10)
619.0 -- Malcolm Brown, Texas (10 1/4)

I knew it wasn't from this season, but it's still not a good look.

No doubt in my mind they draft Malcolm brown now out of Texas.

Bill is going to troll us some day and have Malcom play offense but line up as an eligible receiver while Malcolm declares himself ineligible It's goin to make harbaugh cry.

#90
Malcom Brown

The Universe would implode if there was a Malco(l)m Brown draftable from Rutgers

The move was to go up 7 spots from #40. Not a bad deal for TEN, who can use that 4th to add some much needed depth.

**TRADE ALERT** NYG Gets: #33 overall (2nd round) TEN Gets: #40 overall (2nd round) #108 overall (4th round) #245 overall (7th round)

If this package gets NYG from 40 to 33, our slightly higher 4th should be able to get us from 64 to the low-mid 50s if the right player is there.

Send a former safety up there to draft a new one? I'm sensing a trend!

Wait until Lonnie Paxton announces the Patriots second pick

Most of the guys announcing these picks have or probably will sue the NFL at some point

Remote from Louisville with Brady?

Y'know, sometimes when I see a pic like that of Brady and the Boys, I think of that clip of his scouting combine physical and think "THAT guys lives THIS life?"

Thanks man. I always get nervous posting stuff and not having it pan out. Especially with the draft. My buddy typically gets his info early and then anything can happen. Haven't heard anything yet about today's targets but I'm trying to find out.

At some point you mentioned that there were two targets and one was left (Brown).  Out of curiosity, who was the other? Thanks!
