Oh with you on Merlot. I just don’t picture HRB as a wine drinker :)

And I say that as a large consumer of red wine. But actually the drinking on a handful of days per year checks out with my mental picture given the discipline required to be a professional cards + handicapper.

(Leans back) is a crucial piece of the body language lol.

Todays version would not recognize the one in my twenties. True degen stories….a ton of them. Vegas and Atlantic City ones are the best.

Nice to grab another rotation player I guess, but at this point he's just a less efficient D'Angelo Russell. They have enough one-way guys on their roster already, and Ham isn't exactly doing the best job picking the right guys to put on the floor.
Will probably grab Oladipo too. There’s nothing getting them close to out of the West.

Has anyone noticed that Charlotte has a -12.2 point differential this year? That would be third worst ever, if they keep it up.

Banton’s Agent pregame: “I want you to be aggressive. This is your opportunity.”

Banton: “Got it”

If our bench castoffs like Champagnie and Banton can end up as rotation players for bottom-half teams, that speaks well of (A) our scouting / coaching, and (B) our reputation / standards, both in the eyes of would-be trade counterparties as well as agents considering a two-way or vet-min offer from us. Our team is so good that guys who have the talent to be credible rotation NBA players can't even get off the bench to get minutes for us? Awesome! I hope Lamar Stevens tears it up for Memphis, too. Let a thousand ex-Celtics bloom (except against us, Aaron Nesmith) - it can only be to our benefit.

Neiher Scoot or Brogdon played, so Portland was scraping the bottom of something to find anyone to play point guard. They started some guy named Ashton Hagans

@benhogan has been trying to get Wright to the Cs for years. Get it done Theo!
Wanted Danny in the Summer of '21 (before he retired) to get Delon Wright + Al Horford to replace Tristan Thompson & Kemba Walker (the $$$ aligned) and start Smart at PG...

You'd be shocked at how much pushback I got on those fake trades

Even after 2yrs of the Kemba experience, there was How are the Celtics going to replace 19.3ppg pearl-clutching!!! around here

It's about retaining Kemba's salary slot.

Yep, Horford/Wright would be an upgrade from Kemba/TT and give them more flexibility next year.

Plenty of teams have been blowing through the cap, that will be the cost of keeping the Jays and staying competitive.

To be fair, Delon really is kinda shitty. ;)

2 years ago, a 29-year-old Delon would have been fine as a bench PG on an expiring. Brad ended up dumping TT to save a few $$$ instead of adding Delon. Still, a great trade since Thompson was gawd awful & in the way of TL.

Not sure how Boston survived by losing Kemba's 19.3 ppg??? Gawd I remember those battles around here. POINTZ!!!

Then OKC cut him, then NY cut him, then Dallas cut him and now he's somewhere in Barcelona driving a Vespa...

He was also -11 and MEM lost by 25. :)
Nobody's saying he's All-Star material, but it's OK to applaud a nice performance by a former Celtic who, by all accounts, was a good teammate in Boston.

FWIW, every single Grizzly finished with a minus-rating last nite, including three starters (Z. Williams, Kennard and JJJ) who were minus-16, minus-17 and minus-17, respectively.

Beyond the personal, it's good for business when Boston's end of the bench guys find some success elsewhere. Much easier to toss one of them in as salary filler if the other team thinks there's a shot it turns into a real rotation player.

Yea, reflects well on Brad's bench-building

The Celtics have good roster balance in regards to Center/Wings/Guards now.

Smart/Grant's D has now been replaced with Jrue/Tillman/ Hauser

March 1 is the day players have to be off a team in order to eligible to play in the playoffs for another team.

This article goes through some of the candidates and potential landing spots. Of note, the article makes a WAG that Daniel House will sign with the Cs.

I doubt that will happen - I think the Cs will be saving a roster spot "just in case" - but interesting concept.

Here's the write-up on House:

There was a (brief) time in which Danuel House Jr. ranked among the better three-and-D wings in basketball. He was at his best for the 2018-19 Houston Rockets, starting 52 times for that 53-win team while converting 41.6 percent of his long-range looks and holding his own in most perimeter assignments on defense.

His shooting has cooled considerably since (35.4 percent since the start of 2019-20), and since that's essentially all he ever offered on offense, his minutes dried up along the way. He was getting just 15 a night for the Philadelphia 76ers this season before they dealt him to Detroit at the deadline. The Pistons waived him the same day.

Is it telling that he hasn't found his next gig yet? Maybe. Then again, he might just be taking his time while deciding on the right fit. House was said to be "weighing his options between several Eastern Conference contenders," per the Pat Bev Pod, run by NBA veteran Patrick Beverley, a teammate of House in Philadelphia.

House should have a decent chance of finding his way into a playoff wing mix, even if only as a depth option. He remains a serviceable defender (71st percentile in defensive estimated plus/minus) who can finish at the rim (69.4 percent shooting inside of three feet) and convert catch-and-shoot threes (34.3 percent).

Some win-now shopper should give him a job, and the Boston Celtics could be that team. They added frontcourt depth (Xavier Tillman) and a backcourt project (Jaden Springer) at the deadline, but the wing rotation remains shallow behind Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Sam Hauser.

Prediction: House signs with Boston.

Help me understand these two statements. If a player has to be on the roster by 3/1 to be eligible to play in the playoffs, then why would the Celts save a roster spot "just in case"?

As I understand it, it's not that the player has to be on a roster by March 1, it's that the player has to be off another team's roster by March 1. So, take Otto Porter Jr. for example. It doesn't mean he has to sign with another team by March 1, it means that he has to cut ties with UT by March 1. If he cuts ties with UT by March 1, it's my understanding he can sign with any other team after that and still remain playoff eligible.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I.e., "Players can sign with new teams and remain playoff eligible if their contracts are bought out or waived before the March 1 buyout deadline (Playoff Eligibility Waiver Deadline). Any player waived after this point can play the remainder of the regular season for a new team, but they cannot participate in the playoffs." https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-trade-deadline-2024-guide-150252765.html

I saw that Mike Muscala had gotten bought out too, with articles all saying "hey, now he can sign with Boston again!"

I rather doubt we kick those tires, given that his 3P shooting has fallen off a cliff (last year: 39.4% with OKC, 38.5% with us - this year, 31.8% across 2 teams). But at least he's eligible to do so.

Converting a two-way is the other way to use that roster spot, isn't it? So in terms of Muscala (or any big man) the question is whether we'd prefer them or Queta for playoffs.

For me, Tillman obviates the small theoretical role for Griffin (big body depth to bang with Embiid/Jokic/Giannis)

I personally would like a wing added - House is certainly a possibility. The person will only play if there's an injury, but I worry more there than anywhere else about deep depth. A bigger guard is a different way to frame the possible gap.
