Philosophical question: if the "unwritten" rule is "don't be a dick about breaking the written rule," is it still unwritten?

Yes.

That's not a philosophical question.

"Philosophical" may be a relative term when you spend your life teaching history to 13 year olds. Most of my "philosophical" conversations involve either Miley Cyrus or farts. I walked in on 2 kids staring off blankly into space, deep in thought, asked the girl behind them what the deal was, and was told that they were debating whether it would be worse to step in dog poop or be pooped on by a bird.
I need to get out more, and will leave te philosophy to the adults in the future.

So?  Which is worse?  I think you gotta go with the bird shit being worse.

Normally I'd agree, but apparently the Italians think bird poop is good luck. I think it depends on the footwear, too; deep grooves in the soles of athletic shoes make for problematic clean-up

All of these old wives tales have one true origin.  Something bad happened and somebody wanted to make the affected party feel better about it.  Stepped in shit?  "Hey, that's good luck!".  A bird crapped on you?  "Hey, that's good luck!"  It's raining on your wedding day?  "Ironically, that's good luck!"

It's 2nd cousin to "Everything happens for a reason" sympathy plays that catch on.  That's my theory anyways.

Alanis, is that you?

(It's also possible you did that on purpose, in which case, you got me).

Regis Philbin's FS1 show got canned so they can give Mike more time. Regis must be feeling good- his new show never took off and was dumped, while his old show is now more popular than ever without him.

Didn't they shitcan Regis's show right around Super Bowl time?  Or was that just when they decided to do it but let him play out the string, so to speak?  Either way, I'm not sure Francesa was the cause of the show getting dumped as much as he's the fortunate benefactor.

Mike was not the cause, no. The terrible ratings were the cause.

I was flipping around the TV dial this afternoon to get a sense of what the TV and sports outlets were saying about the Adam Silver press conference.  FS1 had soccer.  I know that YES would obviously preempt Francesa when the NYY had a day game but it's got to kill him that he's preempted by soccer on a big news day.

Sports talk callers aren't capable of discussing an issue like this.

I think that's why Felger & Mazz largely stay away from these kinds of topics when they can (I barely remember them talking about Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin last fall, or Michael Sam this winter).

It's a smart move. You have to pander to your audience, and 90 percent of them will probably only say something unfathomably offensive.

I missed Felger's "Hot Sports Take" on this issue because I was working. What was it?

I saw Felger's take on the Arabella "Early Edition" on CSN.  He's in accord that Silver did a good job, but his "take" is that Doc Rivers is a hypocrite since he went to the Clippers last summer already knowing how much of a racist Sterling really was.  He's making it a referendum on Doc, I presume, and it should draw in callers this week on both sides of the issue.  I'm sure Mazz will chip in with, "You're absolutely correct, Mike."

Edit: don't know why I'm posting Felgie observations in a Francesa thread.  Same first name?

Mike's casual Friday means trolling Mets fans and tooling on the Mets front office. At least today he has some good material with CreditCardGate.

3:05 today should be a good lisen...Mike will have Dave Hudgens who was fired as Mets hitting coach after yesterday's game and has subsequently said that fans booing players at home has had an effect on the performance of the team...

On the WFAN website, an interview between Francesa and Ted Williams' daughter, Claudia, who is hawking her book "Ted Williams: My Father - A Memoir."

The interview was conducted on 5/22/2014, and many subjects are touched upon (her brother John-Henry, Alcor, ex-Alcor employee Larry Johnson's book "Frozen" and the various Williams' family lawsuits).  Interesting listen.

In the days after that comeback, I remember Francesa saying how teams down 3-0 in a series would inevitably bring up the Sox.  Great to see him holding true to that statement.

An easy excuse to post the best 20 minutes in sports radio history. I was working for an accounting firm that didn't have streaming audio in the office. I took my lunch to coincide with the start of the show and listened in my car. Looking back, they both made so many great observations about what this game meant roughly 12 hours after it ended.

He says plenty of dumb stuff, but I think this was more his way of being condescending toward soccer than anything else. I recognize that smarmy grin and tone in his voice--he's basically saying "lol of course I know nothing about this silly fad game--ok wait, so like, what happens when a player has to pee?!"

Hearing the clip is extra hilarious because when you listen to the show you almost get lulled into the rhythm of him saying everything 3-4 times, but in just one two minute cross-section it sticks out so much. I get it's to soak up airtime but it really is so strange. He asks the guy the exact same question four times, in a row, then reacts in the same way each time.

He's been annoyed about being moved off FS1 a few times for soccer games. I wonder if Fox, having an investment in soccer, asked him nicely to do a soccer spot and this is what they got. To be fair, I'm guessing the vast majority of Mike's audience shares his opinion of soccer. Unlike hockey, which he at least makes an attempt to cover during the playoffs, there most likely isn't a large enough portion of his audience that cares about the World Cup.

Francesa comes back from 2 weeks off and talk about how there's a letter from the late Frank Cashen waiting for him in is mail box...goes on to say Cashen offered him a Mets front office job as well as a TV broadcasting job which he both turned down...i call bullshit...

I wondered about Francesa's response to the World Cup, since Francesa respects nothing more than ratings, and it's been putting up great numbers.

I was interested to tune in to see how he reconciled his disdain for futbol with his whoring for numbers.

But not interested enough, because he sucks now, and I can't listen to him for more than five minutes without wanting to eat broken glass.

I heard him say he was offered jobs on two different occasions, but didn't hear him say it was a front office spot.

I could have gone the rest of my life without hearing Mike Francesa utter the words, "My sexual fantasies."  *

* Talking with caller about Dungy remarks, and repeatedly asking the caller why Sam felt the need to tell the world he is gay. "Do I have to tell everyone about my sexual preference, my sexual fantasies ..." and after that I fortunately arrived at my destination.

Francesa in response to a caller's question: (paraphrase)

I don't like saying this but I think (David) Ortiz gets into the HoF. He's meant to much to baseball. Unless he gets caught up in steroids I think he gets in.

First time I ever heard him say that.

Yup it surprised me. He's always been dismissive of Ortiz and has said repeatedly that as Ortiz was on the 2003 list, he was guilty of PED use. I thought he knew it was a BS argument, but used it mostly to feed his Y-fan listeners and keep them happy.

Francesa admitted today that the move to FoxSports has been a disaster...and he says he will address it and get to the bottom of it next week.

Also, he will be doing his annual summer show from Bar A at the Jersey shore.  People who donate at the door get a chance of being picked to dump the ice bucket on Francesa as he has agreed to do the ALS bucket challenge...

Calipari was in-studio. Francesa sent his personal driver to pick up coach-Cal. These guys have been friends for 30-something years.

But he called in after his appearance after Mike said he wasn't the best "x's and o's coach".

I realize that, but he called into the show after he left to defend himself.  Despite being friends, he got the Francesa dismissal which was a little funny.
