Solid gamble on a guy who was pretty good not too long ago. Might benefit from the change of scenery. I'm on board.

EDIT: I'd rather have him than Wong, at the very least.

-0.2 fWAR

But good the past 2 years, so if the price is right? I guess?

Like this. Couple above average seasons at the plate at a young age. Injured this year, bad in limited PA, but bad luck on balls in play. He's got a much better approach at the plate than Mr. Arroyo.

Should be an upgrade for us.

Should have picked off Kolten Wong instead
If this means that guy who quit comes back, I will firmly fall into the "this was subtraction by addition" category.

Edit: But for real, I kind of like this move, assuming the cost is reasonable.

If I am reading things correctly, he is under team control through 2025 and has an option left. 2+ fWAR the last 2 years, 3+ bWAR, worth a gamble on a bounce back if he came cheap.

I wonder who we are giving up? They just sent him to the minors the other day, so he must have options left. I wonder if he can he start out in Worcester and try to get going down there for a week or so?
The 2021 and 2022 versions of this guy would really help this team. The 2023 version of Urias hit the crapper, he's basically been dead, and so far can't help anyone, but he's only played 20 games since coming back from injury.

Good walk rate and a quick glance says the defensive metrics like him at second and third a lot more than short which should work out just fine for us.

20 games and a .179 BABIP.

I'm glad we sold somebody from the Rule 5 eligibility list today. Was hoping for more of that really.

Incredibly low risk with a good chance of being better than our current MI. Hard not to like this move

Why ouch?
I like Blalock. 2.55 ERA in A+ this year after 1.50 in A & has really been progressing nicely. Would have hoped to give up someone with a little less upside on the buy-low attempt.

He missed all of '22 so coming on this strong in '23 seemed like a good sign. He did have a 4.05 xFIP, though, & I get it. Don't think he would have been taken in the Rule 5, but he was eligible.

Also @chawson was advocating for Urias in one of the threads somewhere, so this is more proof that at least one member of the FO lurks here.

I like it! Could very easily see him recover to form, and the team control is great.

Urias has 7.1 war on baseball reference and he just turned 26. Arroyo has 2.1 career war and just turned 28. I don't know if he's ready to play, but this is an upgrade, and he's under team control, and I've never heard of the prospect they're giving up. Great deal.

I don't see what Arroyo brings to the table that Urias doesn't.
Urias intrigues me.

He's got pedigree (22nd on the MLB Pipeline Top 100 5 years ago), put up superior numbers to Arroyo in the minors, and his progression was possibly impacted by the misfortune of injury. (The Brewers haven't been stellar in the area of player development.) As was noted, he just turned 26 this past month and has had a pair of solid MLB seasons. Let him play!

Cot's has him making 4.7Mill in this his second year of arbitration. He has 2 more years left.

Seems like alot.

I'll also add that he was mis-cast as a 3B/SS by the Brewers, who really mis-handled him. He had a terrific rep coming through the minors as a defensive 2Bman, but the Brewers had other guys there (Wong, Hiura...maybe others I don't remember) and a hole at 3B. It was a new position to Urías and one that tested his arm strength, hence that very high error rate in 2021. The Brewers responded by playing him some at SS, too, also over-taxing his defense. To his credit he does seem to have developed his arm. That said, not sure what happened to his bat this season, beyond the low BABIP and small sample size, something was definitely as he was also awful in AAA. The slightly hopeful news he had a solid July in AAA, so maybe something got fixed be it in terms of health or his swing.

In any case, a good buy low shot. I do hope the Sox play him at 2B.

Why would he be getting more respect that way?
It's the old Bert Blyleven-Jack Morris thing where some people like players who have "tough"-sounding, "manly" names like Jack or (to a lesser extent) Brad, not "nerdy/scholarly"-sounding names like Bert or (to a lesser extent) Bradley.

I’ve seen him pitch. He’s fine. However, with him being Rule 5 eligible I think he’s exactly the type of lottery ticket that you use on a trade like this. This is 100% a credit to the organizational depth.

Yes & no. I don't think he would be drafted to make the leap from A+ to MLB so I think they could keep him off the 40 pretty safely for 1 more year, but who knows?

I'm over my initial annoyance & hoping for a big Urias bounce back.

Having a guy named Blalock off the team is good in my view because some folks would insist on nicknaming him Mookie and we don’t need more Mookie talk around here
I’m just glad he’s not Hank’s son, or else I’d be feeling about a million years old

(please nobody tell me if he is actually Hank’s son)
