For a guy who gets manhandled match in and match out by bigger players, I've got to give him credit. However, his scream on Johnson's foul was laughable.

Gotta finish your chances. Mignolet was fantastic in both legs but Courtois was the difference.

Not a lot to hang heads about, but plenty of lost chances to rue.

Migs was a huge positive- if he can continue this form... Well, we'll wish he found it earlier.

I'm really, really interested... As well as very, very nervous... About what happens to the team when Sturridge returns. I don't think he's the savior. The burden on his shoulders is unfair to bear and I hope he doesn't crumble.

Is there any way to get an attacking trident of a combination/rotation of Sturridge, Sterling, Balo, Borini, and Lallana that works? I'd like Rodgers to prove his genius to find a way of combining a group that's somehow deep in talent and yet lacking in attacking decisiveness to somehow score goals reliably. I'm glad I'm posting on a message board and not pulling the strings, otherwise I'd hate myself for being so shitty.

Sorry Pool fans.  I thought you had the better side over the two legs.

Hey, it happens.  Courtois stood on his head.  The look on Coutinho's face when Courtois stymied him after he'd put the ball low and into the corner from 15 yards--a near-perfect shot--pretty much summed it up.

There's a big part of me that is still just happy to be relevant again after Hicks/Gillette, Hodgson, and Dalglish Part II.

Chelsea has been a top 3-4 team in the world this year so outplaying them over two legs is pretty damn good, results aside.  I gotta give it to Rodgers: He seems to have hit on something with the 3-4-3 formation.  And while Sturridge might not be a savior, it shouldn't be hard for him to be a massive improvement on Balotelli and Lambert.  The upcoming fixture list looks pretty brutal but if current form can be reasonably sustained I think you have a decent shot at both top four and the Europa League.

Also, Costa just got charged by the FA and could get a three match ban, which is pretty sweet.

Stevie G. makign his 700th appearance for LFC at Bolton today. Hopefully a big game for Coutinho to celebrate his new contract. No start for Sturridge.

Liverpool XI: Mignolet, Can, Skrtel, Sakho, Gerrard, Allen, Moreno, Markovic, Coutinho, Lallana, Sterling.
Substitutes: Ward, Johnson, Lambert, Henderson, Sturridge, Manquillo, Borini.

Some rancid officiating in the first 45, Mignolet thankfully continues to look strong around his area (never thought I'd type that)

Fucking hell. As much as Palace has owned Liverpool lately, I was really hoping for Bolton next weekend.

Maybe it's selective memory, but playing against Pards usually seems like a fun day out for Liverpool.

Some days I really hate having a job.  Reading the MBM and these posts made this one of those days.

You still have to deal with this guy though...

(I'd still rather play Bolton)

Liverpool  signs a new ginormous kit deal .. sparking rumours of the likes of Marco Reus in the summer

As much as I like Reus, I just don't see the point in pursuing unless they lose someone like Sterling or Coutinho. They need another striker that fits the system. As well as another keeper and some new bodies for the back line. I just don't think Can should be there long term.

I didn't say they flat out don't need him. What I was basically alluding to is that unless someone leaves in the summer, I think the funds would be better spent elsewhere. All of this is moot unless Liverpool secures a CL spot. And even then, I think he goes to one of the big three clubs in Spain anyway.

Reus cannot go to Barca this summer due to the transfer ban.  The siren song of Real Madrid is always formidable, but they already have Ronaldo, Bale, James, and sometimes Isco vying for wide positions.  I'm not sure that any other Spanish club has the financial power to compete with the big 5 English clubs or Bayern Munich.

Regardless, there will definitely be a bidding war when he leaves.  Short of Barca, Real Madrid and Bayern, he would represent an immediate upgrade to the wing/wide forward position for every other club in the world.  Even at Bayern, current world-beaters Robben and Ribery are both 31 and I wouldn't be surprised if they see Reus and Thomas Muller as their future at wide forward.

Perfect.

Everyone is going to bid on Reus if/when he's available.  It will take a boatload of money that few teams can even contemplate.  I don't think England is particularly likely, but Liverpool seems exceedingly unlikely if he does come to England.  I know, I know, he assuredly grew up idolizing Liverpool as a child and DREAMS of playing in front of the Kop.

So the answer is 7.

Question: How many years would it take City fans to talk down to fans of other clubs because they forget that they're not really a giant club, but a yo-yo side doped up by oil money?

Ha.  YOU'VE GOT NO HISTREEE!

Fwiw, I don't think City are likely to be in the picture either, so it has very little to do with City.  Liverpool just aren't in contention for that class of player right now (imo) and probably can't afford to compete financially with the teams who would be in for his signature.   It's going to be the same thing with Pogba this summer.  Everyone is going to be interested, but I just don't see many teams who can do the deal.   As a fan of a team who is apparently a fake giant club, doped up by oil money, at least I had sense enough to know that when we were linked with players like Kaka, Robinho, etc it was exceedingly unlikely and only going to come off if City paid an exorbitant sum nobody would match.  Not really my fault that your club and others decided to make that option impossible.

I think City will absolutely be in the mix for Reus, along with United, Chelsea (maybe), Real, Bayern, and PSG.

The thing about this situation is that the release clause is so low that you'll have a bidding war on wages. And given the amount of money flooding into the top clubs and what we've seen with other top players in recent years, I'd be surprised if Reus doesn't pull down £200-250K per week from somebody. The problem for clubs like Liverpool (and Arsenal for that matter) isn't that they couldn't afford those wages for a top player, its that this kind of commitment would throw the rest of their wage structure out of whack and so they have to tread pretty carefully. These are clubs where only the biggest stars have gotten >100K and where nobody has ever gotten >150K. Clubs like City and United already have multiple players making over 200K so its just par for the course.

This is actually one of the reasons to think Reus might not go to Bayern either, as their wages are surprisingly reasonable and fairly egalitarian, with all the top players making in the 100-165 range.

This isn't Antoine Griezmann again.  Marco Reus will command much higher wages that Atletico won't be able to afford.  He's going to Bayern, PSG, Real, or City (and I think the likelihood is the order I just listed).

Also while Sterling may grow into a top 20 player in the world, Reus probably is and he's the type of player you build around.  If Rodgers had a chance to snap him up he would, formation/system be damned.
