There's no way that his description is what's really going in.  You don't drink for 40 days, as he claims, and you have a cocktail at a game, then, despite the fact that you weren't drinking on school nights, driving drunk or having adverse health effects you go into 5 weeks of inpatient rehab?

No way.

Good for him for getting treatment, but there's no way it went down how he described.

Agreed.  I hope he gets the help he needs, and his statement suggests that this help is much greater than he suspects.

Let's hope he gets this taken care of and comes back a new man---in several ways.

At his age, it's quite possible he has alcohol related dementia setting in. It could explain some of his anger and bizarre rantings. Not to mention his story of hitting rock bottom.

There's interesting research about alcoholism that shows it's much more of a spectrum than is often portrayed in the media.

It's like you're either totally fine with alcohol or you're leaving las vegas and on your way to liver collapse and death.

But there's new realization that lots of people are adversely affected by alcohol and need treatment, but don't meet standard definitions of alcohol abuse.

Dennis might be among those folks. Good article here:

http://m.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2012/04/are-you-almost-alcoholic-taking-a-new-look-at-an-old-problem/254585/

This is certainly interesting, and a topic that I sometimes consider, but that list of warning signs is pretty useless without context:

  • You drink to relieve stress. - Does a hard day/week at the office sometimes spur a 6 pack purchase?  Yes.
  • You often drink alone. - Wife is out of town, I'll usually have a few pops and watch sports, not always.
  • You look forward to drinking. - I look forward to events where there is drinking, but not the act itself: tailgating, ice fishing, etc.
  • Your drinking may be related to one or more health problems. - 20-30 lbs overweight but that's more food than beer.
  • You drink to relieve boredom or loneliness. - No.
  • You sometimes drive after drinking. No.
  • You drink to maintain a "buzz."  - This is definitely one where if I have some beers during a 1PM football game, I might keep it up throughout the day, but not get sloppy, and not every time.
  • Your performance at work is not what it used to be. - well yeah, but that's cause I'm posting on SoSH right now, not because of alcohol.
  • You aren't comfortable in social situations without drinking.
  • You find that drinking helps you overcome your shyness. - I can totally hold my own without drinking in social situations, but if everyone else is drinking, I'd probably be happier with one than without.  I won't be on the dance floor at your wedding without some liquid encouragement, however.
I think if I were forced to answer yes/no to these questions, I would have to lump myself in as an almost alcoholic, but I dont think that's the case.  I could be in denial, though.

Good for him to try, but his attitude is still shitty about it.

He's really minimizing how much he drinks, how it's affected him, and why he's quitting. People don't go to rehab because they "want to eliminate having one cocktail during a game." The longer the article and the more he spoke, the more he minimized the situation.

Either way, if drinking is a problem for him, I'm glad he's getting it taken care of.

fairlee76 said:
Yeah, good luck to him and all but his history of ranting and general unhinged nastiness suggests that his problem runs a little deeper than wanting to have multiple cocktails during a game.  Shit, if wanting multiple cocktails during Opening Day was the threshold for entering rehab, this place would be deserted.

Ultimately, who gives a fuck why he's going in, he doesn't owe any of us more of an explanation than he gave and we don't know if that one drink turned into 10 more that day and that's why he hit rock bottom or if he had that one drink and then craved 10 more and knew he wouldn't be able to stop himself.

I thought Minihane hit the nail on the head that Dennis is from a different era and is likely embarrassed that he can't fix this himself which is why some of his reasons don't ring true or why he's trying to justify it.

Demonize him for the shit he's said and done, but give the guy a fucking break for recognizing that he had a problem and needed help fixing it before he drove drunk, killed someone or hit his head on the sidewallk.

I can do that.

But I wonder if his radio programme gave the same breaks to others in similar situations while he sat idly by.  I'm guessing that "those people are weak" was the coin of the realm, not "those people are sick and need help."

For his family's sake and his own sake I hope he gets the treatment he needs and finds lasting healing while in rehab.

For our sake, I hope this experience helps soften his view of the world as a place in which he is right and everyone unlike him is scum unworthy of respect or compassion.

Think I'll just go with "fuck that guy". I don't actively wish him ill, or failure at his rehab attempt. But years of being a bloviating, ass-hat bully, both on the air and in social media, stay in the karma bank as far as I'm concerned. And while I'm not sure of what an efficient way to ever search this would be, as mentioned above, I'm very confident there have been instances when other public figures had their feet of clay revealed, and he and the other moron(s) on that program afforded them little or no compassion/well-wishes.

Yeah.

I have at times enjoyed mocking some of his claims of sobriety during twitter rants, and making fun his evident affinity for booze.

Now that he's seeking help, I will probably back off of that line of mockery, although I don't feel bad about doing it in the past. Reaching out for help can be very difficult, and I wish him well in his desire to be better.

But he has also made a particular bed for himself as a public figure, and his career and public identity are mostly built on values other than empathy and non-judgmentalism. John Dennis has more to renounce than booze, before he deserves kid-glove handling. It's good that he wants to stop being a drunk, and that might also help him to stop being an asshole.

I don't think questioning someone who claims to be entering in-patient rehab for craving a drink or two every forty days rises to the level of demonizing.

The fact that he has the on-air/on-Twitter persona of a terrible human being is not relevant here but absolutely biases me to think he is full of shit.

So, does this mean I have Tanguay on my radio in the morning if I flip it to EEI? I'm no huge fan of Dennis but for the most part he facilitates and stays out of the way, Tanguay is just awful.

Wait, are they saying they are going to bring Tanguay in!?!?!  He's actually the one person who would be a step DOWN from Dennis.  Plus, I actually think a two person team of just Minihane and Callahan could be be half decent radio.

Not going to, they have...at least the last couple days (and a bit last week).  If ever there was a downside to John fucking Dennis not being on the air, it's that he's been replaced by Gary fucking Tanguay.

Thank goodness that once NESN 86ed the show, I stopped listening/watching as well.

Good luck to Dennis and I hope he gets better. If he's any less of a dick, that would be a bonus, but I'm not holding my breath.

Tanguay as his replacement is just another illustration of how terrible the selection of on air talent is in this market. Isn't there anyone out there who can fill in who won't make us all wish we were deaf?

I think there is plenty of talent that they could try out but would rather go with someone in the Old Boys Club or "The Lodge" as Fred calls it to help out their buddies.

Rob Bradford filling in for Callahan this morning. The Tanguay-Bradford-Minihane triumvirate makes for really bad radio.

Apparently they are just going to wheel out a bunch of re-treads til Memorial Day. Buckley, Ordway, Tanguay, Bradford, Meter, DeOssie.... Where is the next Dennis and or Callahan? I would think they would be trying to find the next guy. Minihane is one, who is going to be his partner 5 years from now.

The fact is the majority of these guys are older than the demographic they are trying to attract. Doesn't make any sense.

Bingo. His twitter rants alone are enough to show he wasn't taking long breaks from the booze.

He is the one that put the story out there that he had 1 drink in 40 days and therefore needs to go into an extended in patient rehab.  His story definitely lacks credibility; no issue with people poking holes in it.

Certainly don't wish ill on him, and do hope he gets what he needs in rehab to address his addiction.  Addiction is not something I would wish on anyone.  And no, he doesn't need to share the details of his problem with us; he also could have just said "I've got a problem with alcohol, and I'm therefore going into rehab", and everyone would have been fine with that statement.

From Bruce Allen's latest blog:

Phil Zachary, the vice president and market manager for Entercom Boston, refers to Dennis as having a “Hugh Hefner type of party animal” type of persona, which combined with Kirk Minihane’s statements yesterday that Dennis was straight out ofMad Men, really give you a picture of the lifestyle the 63-year-old Dennis leads.

The 1 drink at the game also doesn't jive with the fact that he banged out "sick" the very next day, and that contributed to the rehab

Agree.  Per the Finn article "he could be seen on the NESN broadcast gesticulating animatedly from a seat behind home plate during the game "

Whatever the case may be.  I wish him the best.

Doubt Mut will do much filling in on the morning show considering he does the Red Sox postgame every night.  I would think being on the air until 11pm or so would be incompatible with doing morning drive.

That's the thing I dislike most about "Guy Radio", it always turns into a gigantic creepshow with the worst innuendo this side of junior high school.

"Hey how about that Kate Upton, huh? I'd like to turn those headlights on! Huh? HUH! GET IT!"

Obviously, if there was no FCC, Tanguay and his ilk could flat out talk about fucking which I don't think would be nearly as skeevy.

I 100% agree. The last thing I want to hear is them talking about that. What I was referring to earlier was them talking about the ESPN reporter.

She won't be back. Unless she makes a sex tape! Get it guys?? I said sex tape. Like who wouldn't love that!

It's funny Toucher and Rich get labeled as the disgusting shock jocks yet D&c guy radio is 100x creepier when they talk about women. Outside of Fred's jokes about the bone zone which are tame and 50 shades of guay they don't even sniff the realm of creepy.

With all the shuffling around and failure at EEI, I'm kind of surprised they haven't tested a female guest host.

Jackie Mac is so good, but doubt she want to ever do a full show. Is there really no woman who could yack with someone about sports for four hours?

I heard Callahan do his "I don't like homosexuals, but I don't want to get fired" dance this morning. It's pretty good radio. Especially with Minihane playing the part of the "I want you to get fired so I can start getting paid your salary" co-host.

I flipped over today for about 30 seconds and Tanguay was asking a caller if they used condoms when giving blow jobs in jail. Creepy. Clicked off. Clicked back over like 15 minutes later and they were talking about how if you get a prostitute they make you wear a condom getting a blow job and were all asking about it and Gerry piping in about flavored ones. (Not that they'd know of course)
