John Meter Perel also suggested that the Sox would be very able to find a willing trade partner and would trade Brad Penny for a SS by June, because "25, 26, even 30 teams out there are pitching starved."

His guess? Brad Penny for JJ Hardy, straight up.
Won't you be shocked when Christian Guzman is fielding groundballs in Fenway.

Curt in a car made a special appearance on D&C this morning as Callahan was ranting about how the Celts were gutless jagoffs for "mailing in" and taking "no pride" last night.

Schilling called up and said, "This last 10 minutes is the reason why athletes hate talk radio" and proceeded to dress Callahan down. The one thing Schilling said that made me chuckle was, "You'd never say this to Doc Rivers' face" and all that Callahan could mumble was, "Yes I would." Callahan then changed the subject to "What's wrong with Ortiz?"

The most interesting thing was until Schilling got on the phone, Meterperrel was just as loud as Callahan was in ripping the Celtics. As soon as Schilling came on, Meter was nowhere to be found.

This was terrific. Imagine if anyone not named "Curt Schilling" tried calling in to make that argument?

My favorite line from that tirade: "I'm going to donate money to the 'Doc Rivers Punch Gerry Callahan in the Face Fund'"

He would have been hung up on in 3 seconds. Gerry Callahan is the definition of a telephone tough guy.

Actually he said something else very telling, Schilling said to him something along the lines of you don't believe what you're saying and you're just trying to anger the audience. Callahan shot back, "I got you to call, didn't I?"

And as shitty as it is, Callahan is correct. It's his job to get people to call. Even though I know it is and understand it, it still made me feel sort of like I'm listening to radio wrestling. Callahan is the heel, Meterperrel is the Weasel, Dennis is just waiting for a tee time.

Bingo.

When the story of their stalker broke a few weeks ago, I did think about how it was similar to some old school wrestlers getting attacked by fans. I've grown tired of the D&C show, but I do think they are still very good at pushing their audience's buttons.

Holy crap, that was the most annoying 15 minutes that I have ever heard from John Dennis. Between 8:15 or so to 8:30 Felger started going down the list of serious Bruins injury and in the middle of every single one, Dennis would blurt out "BUILD A STATUE HERE", and kept going to his "#1 SEED KNOCKED OUT 3 DAYS EARLIER THAN THE CELTICS" (caps because he was yelling).

Seriously, it's one thing to fault the Bruins for being a #1 seed and losing in the second round, wrong but I get it, but to criticize them because of how the schedule played itself out??? What? Would the Bruins have been better had they lost last night instead?

Moron.

I got in my car at 710 to drive to work. First thing I hear is that not only have they already interviewed Brady, but that it's airing at 8. I love it when the marketing team talks to the producers.

It's just as possible that Brady called in early (I've heard him call their show between 6 and 6:30 more than once).

My comment was more on the WEEI marketing team selling something, and not actually keeping an eye on it happening. 2 texts within the span of an evening sounds like they knew when Brady was calling in. Perhaps they should have cleared it with Tom first.

Again, maybe he just called in early. He's a star athlete. Sometimes they call in early. Sometimes they calls in late. WEEI doesn't have enough juice to scold Tom Brady. Instead, they tell him "THANKS FOR CALLING!" and put him on the air ASAP.

The happiest day of the year for John Dennis is the most boring day of the year for 99% of his audience. It's US Open time, which means that Dennis' wettest dream comes on the radio: Brad Faxon. Dennis is deliriously giddy for today and then will return to his I-hate-all-sports mantra tomorrow.

I listened to exactly 20 seconds and had to change.

Though I did find the answer to the question: what's more boring than listening to golf on the radio? Listening to someone talk about golf on the radio.

Same here and they even went WAY longer than their commercial break. Only reason I know that is because I switched back after a whole segment on BCN including a song and he was still talking.

The only reason why he's on is because he's from Rhode Island, right? It's not because he's such a dynamic personality.

That is true. "Wow Brad, that shot that you took on the 14th at the Leggs Open last week was awesome! I can't believe you beat that one-armed guy on the final hole! That must have been something! Can you tell me more about it?"

From Faxon's POV, I can see why he goes on D&C, but what's the reason why EEI books him?

Does WEEI really "book" him, so to speak? Or does he just call D+C, who basically just talk to him when they want? It's not like it's a sponsored appearance, or that they really promote it, other than "coming up today, Faxon calling in." I just think it's Dennis giving him air time because he gets off on it and thinks it's interesting radio, when it really isn't. Granted, neither are the rest of their segments.

Of course they book him. That's part of the producer's job; they get guests on the show so that D&C can ask them questions. Dennis and Callahan certainly aren't quick enough (most people aren't to be fair) to think of enough questions for a 20 minute spot.

You didn't think that these guys were driving around and thought, "Hmmm ... I should call sports radio and see what's up?" aside from Schilling of course.

I think Faxon falls much more into the Schilling camp of "Hey, I'll call up D+C" than the Brady-Rivers-Remy-Francona type segments, which are certainly booked. I was referring only to Faxon, in that is seems like Dennis getting his buddy on the air when no one else really cares. He's not a recurring segment, he's not a big "get", he's not really someone you would book, like you said. I think it's just someone Dennis gets to call in from time to time.

I could be off, but the tone of the Faxon calls seem much less like a booked spot and more like someone just calling in to talk for a bit.

Right, I agree that's the tone mainly because it seems that Dennis is good buddies with him, but I'd be shocked if he didn't set it up with one of the producers beforehand.

I agree with JMOH in this appearance being set up. They don't promote it like a bigger guest, but I'm pretty sure they mentioned Faxon was going to be on earlier in the week.

Dennis may be the media personality I dislike above all others, but I don't begrudge him getting his golf circle jerk. If they had a weekly guest to talk golf I would get very annoyed, but having a pro on to talk about a major is reasonable.

Plus, and maybe this should or shouldn't matter - but this isn't getting just a local pro on the show - Faxon is 34th all time in career money winnings. To me that's a pretty good get.

What did he say today?

In a related topic, I was listening to Tucher and Rich on BCN interview Kiefer Sutherland today and I started thinking that about Dennis and Callahan's crush on Jack Bauer. Every Tuesday following "24" their orgasmic glee in which Bauer tortures people makes me believe that they are watching a documentary. And every once in awhile when they're discussing politics, one of them inevitably says, "Why can't we do what Jack Bauer does?" I have to think that what they realize that 24 is not real, but they say it so frequently I'm beginning to wonder.

JMOH, see quote above. During Headlines they covered some church that tried to have a gay exorcism and he went off on a "what if it works, who would be against it, it would be great." rant. To which Iggy couldn't even fathom coming up with a response and basically called Callahan delusional.

It may be just me but you could actually hear Dennis squirming in his seat.

For the first time today in a while it was actually apparent that Dennis was alive. When they discussed Governor Sanford during headlines, and Callahan made excuse after excuse for Sanford's actions and subsequent decision to not resign from office (he's a religious man, he is genuinely sorry, etc. etc. etc.) Dennis actually called him out and said that if Sanford had a D next to his name then Callahan would have been going completely insane about this story. He really did not have much of a reply except to keep affirming that Sanford was a religious man and truly sorry and all of this other crap.

yeah, that's probably a more accurate synopsis. I couldn't hear him clearly due to the sound of my roaring laughter.

People often ask "why do you listen", and I think I figured it out this morning. His radio show is a living, breathing version of "All in the Family". Gerry, of course, is Archie. Iggy is the "Meathead". And John Dennis is Edith, just going along for the ride.

I am so inured to Callahan's mean-spirited and disagreeable racism and homophia that nothing he says surprises me anymore. What does surprise me is how it is his bosses allow him to persist in this way. I'm not even talking about the free speech aspect of it. I get all that. I'm talking about good manners, decency, and respect. Alas, their Arbitron ratings must indicate that it's good business to allow this stuff to continue. That's scary.

And Sparky nails it. Callahan is allowed to spew this crap because people insist on listening to him despite the obvious lack of appeal.

Turn those goddamn radios off, people. No changes will be forthcoming at that station until their ratings begin to suffer and their ad rates drop.

Anyone listen this morning? They were going on and on about Michael Jackson.

According to Gerry, 1980s Michael Jackson is for "teen girls and gay guys".

I never listen to them (take typical EEI inane sports blather and add in bigotry and ultra conservative politics blather? pass) but had drive to a dentist appointment this morning so I put them on in the car hoping to hear news about Penny or the Pats or something.

Instead, they are frothing at the mouth about Jackson. Someone called in and described how he had been "sick all weekend" because Congress had held a moment of silence for him, and the two of them went nuts, totally agreeing with the caller.

People are willing to listen to this drivel?

I listened a bit and Callahan said something like, "And Fox News--which Iggy (a "liberal" producer) says is a 'Republican channel' was playing Michael Jackson videos all week. How is that a 'Republican Channel'?"

I think that Gerry's point was that because Fox News played a few Jackson videos this weekend it proves that the channels is fair and balanced. I don't want to get all V&N about Fox News, but I'm not really sure how a video by Michael Jackson (on the weekend after he dies) proves that Fox News isn't conservative. But to Callahan, it's proof positive. Oh yeah, Callahan says he has to get his Michael Jackson news from the UK or Canada because American journalists are "in bed with the Jackson cover-up".

Also, the three of them seemed to be absolutely giddy about the death of Jackson and the details that are leaking out. I'm not saying that the allegations by his former wife Debbie Rowe aren't interesting, but it was almost as if they felt validated in the fact that Michael Jackson was "weird". Like they were the only people to think this and they've been screaming ti from the rooftops to deaf ears.

Dennis, Callahan and Meterperrel do not do pop culture very well.

Knowing how Callahan thinks, he probably thinks the fact FoxNews is playing videos of a black (well, genetically) guy who was a star in the eyes of younger audiences during his and later generations proves they 'care' about minorities. He likely sees Jackson as the 'black' musician who was liked by 'liberals' and 'minorities'.

This might seem ludicrous, but Callahan quite literally has the analytical skills and overall mind of a seventh grader.

Fox News was playing the videos for the same reason everybody else was... it was what the public wanted to see. People would have flicked off Fox and gone over to CNN or whatever for their MJ fix. It's just business - which is of course, very Republican.

They had the same tone when discussing Dice-K's recent struggles and DL stint a week or two ago. Constant cultural focus. "All of Japan must be in mourning now that there hero's failed miserably." Or something to that effect. IMO, the title of this thread is absolutely fitting.
