Kind of shocking, as I would have thought that the Yankees would have signed him

NY's roster is so poorly composed that they kind of couldn't fit him. For starters, they have Beltran only playing DH now with his elbow injury, he hasn't even taken fly balls in weeks. The only move would be to DFA Soriano in favor of Morales, and while that would give them an actual backup 1B for the first time all season, I don't think it's clear that Morales will outhit Soriano (who was insanely good in the second half last year) going forward, and Soriano can play RF with Beltran out (they have him in a platoon with Ichiro currently).

Maybe he will be their trade chip later in July.

Are they even able to trade him given the lateness of the signing?

The Morales and Drew deals seem kind of crazy. Who are these teams bidding against?

Scott Boras? Maybe they don't want to poison the relationship so they are just pro-rating the initial qualifying offer so that he can save face and it won't come back to haunt them later.

You raise a great question, and to me that's the only explanation. From a pure leverage standpoint, the clubs have all of it in my opinion. The game gets along fine without these guys.

Is this going to become a thing where guys who get QO don't sign until near the draft?

I would think you might see more players taking the QO and trying to work out a long term deal after accepting it. If I were a player and I received a QO I would want to be sure that I could get a long term deal, I just don't know how you gain that assurance.

I would guess that borderline guys will take the 14.1 mil per year (or whatever it is next year ~15ish maybe) instead of gambling like Drew & Morales did.

Also it's possible that some teams will be a bit more nervous offering the QOs because they know some players will be more likely to take them.

But if they wait until Opening Day or later to sign, they can prevent the possibility of being offered a Qualifying Offer the next year.

I don't think many guys will take the QO. It's just too early in the offseason to have a good idea of what your market. Clearly, Drew should have taken it...but at the time, Peralta had just gotten 4 / $52 and he surely thought there was more money out there (and there probably was if he wasn't asking for so much).

Yeah, but Peralta signed with the only team that was desperate for a SS and actually addressed it. There's a value in knowing the market, unless Boras mistakenly assumed that job would be Drew's.

Why the Tigers didn't sign Drew, I'll never know.
