"You know what we need to bring back? Billionaire pre-teens as protagonists. How did we ever get away from that l?.A super rich kid, with lots of toys??!? I feel like that could work!!!
I found it especially funny because earlier in the pod he said something along the lines of Tom Hanks's character lacks the trait that makes you an adult, self awareness.

Other unintentional comedy was in Alive-cast Simmons referred to actors as speaking "American" rather than spanish a couple times.

One movie left for one word movie month...my prediction is Chef because it just went live on HBO Max and there does seem to be a connection to movies that get featured on the Ringer and movies that are available on HBO Max

There is? I wish there was but I’ve noticed a lot of the time they pick a movie that’s only available for rent. I wish they did better to time their choices with what’s easily available on any streamer I already pay for. It would also be nice if Bill let them announce it ahead of time.

I don't understand why he does this. It's like belonging to a book club in which the host says to show up and then they'll announce which book will be discussed that evening.

It is an on-demand podcast. You can see what just dropped and then find the movie to watch before you listen if you prefer that.

I'm a bit more surprised that he doesn't have deal(s) with a few streamers to coordinate episodes with film availability on their platforms. If only because it could be a revenue generator ("Check out Deliverance on MGM+").

Bill, Mal, and Van get their wish granted and rewatch 'Big,' starring Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, and Robert Loggia.
I did not care for this one at all. Far too much nit picking, time spent talking about "Elizabeth Perkins: statutory rapist" and how everyone's lives going forward are broken. Which I guess was inevitable given the people involved.

So they had one word title January and none of the candidates was Airplane? They still haven't done it. Are they saving it for a special episode? Easily one of the most rewatchable comedies of Bill's lifetime.

While it would be strong in a few categories, some just wouldn't apply due to the parody nature of the movie. I agree though, it would be great to hear just because Airplane always makes me smile when quoting scenes. Bill would have fun because of how he cracks Kareem for his dry attitude on the court, and how it contrasts with this appearance.

For those seeking Deliverance, TCM has it scheduled Friday at 8 pm. They usually put movies on TCM onDemand sometime after they air. (Conrack and Midnight Cowboy are scheduled after it, so it must be Jon Voight night.)

This week, Bill Simmons and Chris Ryan must drink the coffee to experience what it’s like to rewatch ‘The Vanishing,’ starring Jeff Bridges, Kiefer Sutherland, Sandra Bullock, and Nancy Travis.

What an odd choice.

I'm dying to know whether Bill has seen the original Spoorloos. I'm gonna guess not.

I agree; this is one of the few movies I haven't even heard of. They spend the first chunk of the pod explaining how this was apparently on all the time at one point in the '90s, so it's squarely a "one for us" movie they do sometimes. Based on the pod thus far, it seems like everyone hated it at the time except BS, this then-roommate, and CR.

I haven't seen the remake, but I enjoyed the original.

Is it really rewatchable though? It's most known for its ending. It's a great movie, sure - but it offers diminishing returns.

I dunno. They did do The Sixth Sense. Similar issues there.

The original Spoorloos is among the best foreign films I've ever seen including an all time great ending. I've never bothered with the American remake which apparently changed things.

I've legit stopped listening to this. So many of these movies lately are not even remotely 'rewatchable.'
Which ones? I haven't seen the vanishing but I've personally been pretty happy with the movie choices, many of which (Deliverance, Blow Out) are classics

Oh sure, Deliverance is a classic, but that's not something I actively enjoy 'rewatching.' As for others of late - The Vanishing, Alive, Sideways (good movie, but not even remotely Payne's best), Body Heat, Cruising, American Gigolo, The Edge. None of those do anything for me really, maybe Gigolo can be considered something you'd rewatch, but the others?

Depends what you like I guess--I'd rather watch most of those than the rocky/karate kid/fast and the furious/rambo movies that are so big on the show.

From April through October The Rewatchables is my go-to lawn mowing podcast. I'll listen to everything they release in those 7-8 months. Outside that window I only rush to listen to the movies I'm quite familiar with, and post-October I'd say that's about half of them. It's definitely been an inconsistent run of eps the past few months.

The pod is good even for movies I don’t love.
It might be better for the ones i don't like. If I'm going to spend two hours watching a movie I want it to be something good--e.g. not tango and cash--but for an hour long podcast to listen to doing the dishes or folding laundry a really stupid movie is perfect for those guys to good one (e.g., Tango and Cash---an all time great rewatchable)

I actually like when it's one that I haven't seen much, or at all. Like I'm going to watch The Vanishing now", and I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

(*and by 'watch' I mean 'put on in the background while I work from my couch)

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, Juliet Litman, and Amanda Dobbins head to the top of the Empire State Building to rewatch Nora Ephron’s classic romantic comedy drama ‘Sleepless in Seattle,’ starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Rosie O’Donnell.

Maybe they will finally prompt me to actually watch that movie, which I've resisted for 19 years of living in Seattle. Mostly because of how nauseating it is to hear people make bad puns on the title.

In his date with Victoria (at the Dahlia Lounge) Tom Hanks returns an almost untouched beer and orders "Absolut, straight up".

That is straight up sociopathic behavior. Who the hell drinks neat, room-temperature vodka?

I gained a real appreciation for this movie mostly thanks to Blank Check doing an Ephron series and me going through tons of low stakes rom-coms during the height of lockdown I like when they mix it up with something like this.

Re-casting was so strange for this. Ben Affleck and JLo? I liked Bill’s Jennifer Lawrence pick for the Meg Ryan role. But Miles Teller? I kind of like him as an actor but he’s not in the same realm of likability as Hanks. Emma Stone is probably too obvious but would also work perfectly for that reason

I mostly want to watch to see where they shot in Seattle. Though even there... Oh hey, the Dahlia! Probably seemed cooler 30 years ago (although I like it just fine anyway).

Different location, actually. Same vibe though.

A lot of great touchstones: various Market scenes, lunch at the Athenian, Gasworks, the Fremont night, Alki, SeaTac.

And, of course, his houseboat on Westlake.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons and Sean Fennessey determine whether they're rushers or draggers after rewatching Damien Chazelle’s 2014 classic ‘Whiplash,’ starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons.

I like to think about Whiplash with JK Simmons as Schillinger from Oz and this is what he did after getting out of jail (in the alternate universe where he didn’t die).

Looks like it's going to be Catch Me If You Can this week, so I gave it a re-watch on Friday. Leo is super charismatic in this, and in the wake of Elvis it's a nice reminder that Hanks has never been good at accent work.

Young Matt Damon, natch.
Sydney Sweeny for the Amy Adams role, obviously.

On that note, my wife has asked me to not play any Simmons' podcasts while we're driving because she finds him creepy when he drools over young women. She used to love his podcast. It really is getting weird.

Actually, I think Sweeney gets the Jennifer Garner role. Adams is more a Zoey Deutch type.

Well, eventually, the show is bound to outlive it's premise. The re-watchability of the movies they review is going to be ever decreasing. Just enjoy it for what it is - a podcast about movies.

This movie is legitimately rewatchable. Through its runs on HBO and TNT, I've easily seen it ten or more times. The swath Leo cuts in this (Ellen Pompeo, Jennifer Garner, Elizabeth Banks, and Amy Adams among them) is about as impressive as whatever he's done in real life. And at the center of it is a story about a young man who is really just seeking the family he lost when his parents' marriage broke up. Great flick.

Least shocking recasting idea from Simmons for Catch Me If You Can. Scarlett Johansson for Amy Adams.

For the boobz!

ScarJo is almost 40. She's aged past the point of playing a character that naive.

Edit: Never mind, I thought that you were referring to a "2023 update".

Back in the day Dunst is a good call. She could project that same innocence that Adams did in that role. And agree that Amy Adams is perfect in that role and should not be recast. But Bill has always had a problem with her for some reason.

Amy Adams should never be recast out of a role. She is amazing. Although ScarJo is pretty great herself (loved JoJo Rabbit, although not sure of the accent). Haven't watched Catch Me If You Can in a while, so will be re-watching before listening.

As an aside, I recently started following this thread, and thus listening to the podcast at work. And although Bill is bad much of the time, the podcast is great and has turned me onto a bunch of movies through actual podcasts, or through references to others by Bill, Sean, or Chris. Especially pre-80's movies that I wouldn't have watched otherwise. There are so many movies that I hope they eventually cover.

I have watched most movies covered on Rewatchables, but because of the pod, in one way or another, I have watched the following this year for the first time (and re-watched many more):

All the President's Men - Great
Glengarry Glen Ross - Outstanding
Heat - just ok
Man on Fire - Pretty good
Mission Impossible 1 thorugh 6 - 1 was good, Fallout was ok, the rest were meh.
Out of Sight - Turned it off due to boredom
The Professional - meh
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - Great
You Were Never Really Here - Bad

And the following are on my list for future viewing:

Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Chinatown
Come and See
Shortcuts
Seven Samurai
The Game
Nobody's Fool
The Verdict
The Last Detail
Mulholland Dr.
Layer Cake

Maybe this should be left for PMs, but I am interested in other's favorites and suggestions for viewing. And maybe another thread - I would be interested in hearing/debating top 5 lists. My favorite episode was There Will Be Blood, but that is my favorite movie.
