The Oilers haven't made an intelligent decision in 15 years, i.e. since Kevin Lowe became GM and staffed the organization with fart catchers.  Since 2000, the only transactions that have actually improved the team are the Pronger trade and their 1st round draft picks.  Everything else has made the team worse, and that's not an exaggeration.

I haven't been real enamored with the Rutherford Era but getting Ehrhoff for less than Meszaros is comical.

Washington did pretty well with the Niskanen contract I think but that other one to #44, yikes.

Whoa! Just saw that Niskanen news. I am more than okay with it. I've been banging my drum for him for months. Love that deal. Hate the Orpik deal. Mike Green on the block?

@StapeNewsday: According to sources, #Isles were more than competitive with offers to targeted FAs: Offered 3 years to Dan Boyle, 4 years to Jarome Iginla.

Also, $2 million for Richards? We couldn't pony up?

Isles will see a lot more success in the FA market next summer.

Richards clearly wants another Cup. Can't fault him for it, he just picked the team that, in his mind, was the biggest contender with a token amount of cap space.

He's also pocketing $3 million from the Rangers next season. Easier to take less from a contender when you've got that in your back pocket. As for the Bruins not ponying up, I think he's a bad fit.

The bruins don't need another center.

Just shitcan Green before he makes the new guys shitty. I hope to never see 52 on the home bench at Verizon again.

The Chicago Blackhawks announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on eight-year contract extensions, which run through the 2022-23 National Hockey League season. A formal press conference will be held at the United Center next week, with day and time being announced at a later date.

Will be very interesting to see how they field a team going forward

Yes indeed, they currently have about 5M in cap room in 2015 with only 15 players signed.  The only player without a NTC that they can move for any real cap relief is Hossa.  Obviously two excellent players but not sure they are worth 2M more per season than Crosby.  CHI is making a big bet on the cap going way up soon.

Both great players, but that seems crazy. As it stands, roughly 30% of their payroll is locked into two players. I'm not sure either of those contracts is tradeable, either. They really need a significant cap increase soon to stay elite.

Yeah, I have to think that the Hawks expect the cap to be increased significantly over the coming years.  Everything points to that happening as hockey is making more money now than ever before.

Evan Sporer, writing for Boston.com is on drugs.

What transpired to precipitate the Seguin trade is all well and good, and maybe it was time for the Bruins to part ways with the forward. A year later though, it’s clear the Stars got the better end of the deal.

Both teams make that trade in a heatbeat again.  Dallas needed a 1st line C, and has a lineup where he can prosper.  The B's needed more depth at wing, and got it.  Eriksson and Smith both contributed for the B's last season, and should going forward.  In terms of cap and stats, basically Loui + Riley = Seguin.  The B's needed Depth.  Dallas has cap space, the B's did not and needed more flexibility.

Why do anyone still read the Globe?
Boston.com is not the Globe.

I mostly agree with the article; the list of players who accomplished what Seguin did at such a young age is minuscule and has a lot of great players on it. Him blossoming was their best chance to both win now and to bridge the gap to a post-Chara team. As for the off-ice stuff, players mature and it obviously wasn't so bad that they couldn't sign him to a 6-year extension (which actually made him more valuable as he's going to be underpaid for a while).

Of course, my opinion hasn't much changed since a day or two after the trade, and nothing new has really occurred to change things. Maybe when Morrow and Fraser come up the balance will change and we can have this argument again, but right now there's not much reason to write the article other than clickbait. That said, it is good to see at least someone in Boston with a mainstream media outlet not parrot the party line on the deal.

Think the Bruins are in cap hell now? Remove Smith, Loui and Iginla and add Seguin, that is a lot of holes to fill with no money.
He was never going to be the player here that he is in Dallas, not to mention a solid 41% on face-offs, he is not a Center on the Bruins and has no one like Benn to play with.

no wonder.  He's a good 2nd/3rd line guy, and the KHL needs that level of talent (especially since they're heading in the WRONG direction financially).

Apparently he and the Blues were $300k off, $2.7m offer vs $3m ask. On phone so can't link but it was on Puck Daddy. That said, I don't think SOB is gonna do much to elevate the KHL. Very useful player but nothing especially special like a Kovy.

Are we just going to assume that Seguin has the same level of success in Boston that he had in Dallas this year? Dallas and Boston play completely different styles, which was the big problem to begin with. The off the ice stuff didn't help, but if Seguin had made more of an effort to play the style Clode wanted, he never would have been traded. The trade made sense for both teams, and it still does. Seguin was not a fit here.
