Listened to the last few innings on radio. When the "1st 8-3-5 TP since 1883" stat came up, McDonough dryly said, "You did that game, Joe, right?" To which Castig replied, without missing a beat, "it was a rainy night, just like this one."

Also, Castig took a foul ball off the shoulder, which bounced off the wall and hit McD in the back of the head. Great radio with no phlegmming.
I really like Joe Castig. I listen to a few brodacasts on MLB audio. Did not catch this exchange last noght but he's very good at his job.

I am a little puzzled about the reaction to the triple play last night. It seemed to me that only one player made a stupid mistake: Duvall. Once he misjudged the fly ball, then Masa had no choice, since Duvall was running to second, but to go to third. So, how does that make the whole team stupid?

We only see parts of the play on TV. So I assume that Duvall running to second meant Masa had to take off for third. But then the OF could have thrown to 2nd instead of 1st to get that out.
Also, if Masa correctly judged the ball, and stays on 2nd it's irrelevant as Duvall is out when the 1B gets the ball and touches the bag.

Masa easily retreated to the bag when the ball was caught. He left for 3rd too late to ever get there when the throw went to first. Had he taken off as soon as the throw was uncorked I think he makes it

So that reinforces the point that there were two baserunning mistakes that led to two additional outs on the play.
Plays like that can hurt, glad this one did not affect the rest of the game (the color guy mentioned how it might have saved Morton a bunhc of picthes but the Sox hit him anyway)

Thanks, guys. They discussed this on mlbn, and they disagreed whether Masa was at fault or not. Brian Kenny said he "liked the aggressiveness." The other man, who may have been Amaro, Jr., thought he was at fault. In any case, I couldn't tell last night if he left for 3rd too late to get there. Apparently, he did.

It was a POOR decision by Yoshida. He's not a speed merchant to start with, and then his need to scamper back to the second base bag to tag meant he had to entirely stop his momentum towards RCF and then start a dash in the opposite direction for 3B as the throw is on its way to 1B.

Thanks. It's interesting that several of the views don't make it clear, but one does. No wonder I missed it in real time.
