Did you get Jr's autograph? Probably be worth something in 20 years or so . . . .
He refused to sign anything (I think that is what those noises were), but I tickled his cheeks, passed him to the Dad when the Mom got up to use the restroom, and he continually reached out and grabbed at me which I think can be considered a “high-5”.

I mean - you speculated on the race of a babies mother, after implying that it was some kind of secret the kid even existed.
I speculated on the race of the baby’s mother only because there was a large disparity between how caucasian the baby looked, and how non-caucausian the grandparents were. As a Dad of two mixed race girls, it was something very noticeable to me and something that people ask us about a lot (my girls, sadly, have my Irish skin tone). I can see how it could have been perceived, but I assure you there was no malice nor bias involved. I just notice it because people constantly ask us about it and are always confounded to learn that my wife is the mother and not the “nanny” (which we don’t get offended by because it is a pretty natural response when you see them together).

FWIW, the man with Jayson's mother was probably not his father, Justin Tatum. I don't think they've been together since Jayson was born. She got married a couple of years ago to a man named Marcus Barnes. No idea if they're still together, but if so, it was probably him.

I searched this thread for any mention of "baby", "son", "mother" or "kid". If it was mentioned not using those terms, then ya got me.
Did you search the date this thread was started and compare that to the fact his kid was born sometime around new years?

And even beyond that, jut because it wasn't mentioned in here doesn't mean no one knew about it. Masslive has videos on youtube with Tatum, in January, talking about how his mom is helping with his newborn. There are questions in that interview asking if he's been getting enough sleep because he's a new dad, etc. I'm simply saying it wasn't some top secret thing--it was in interviews and articles in Boston, when it happened. There were articles in May/June about his playoff ascendency, how he's "no longer a rookie" and he talked about being a new dad.

In the Tatum thread that was active at the time his son was born, it was mentioned briefly in the thread a few days after the birth. There was no discussion because, honestly, who cares? I'm just saying that while not everyone knew, it's not really news to a lot of folks that watched a lot of the Celtics last year.

That said, welcome on board the bandwagon. Rev is currently driving.

That may be the case. She did say “we’re the grandparents”, but that could have just been to avoid any confusing conversation. I can’t find a pic of Jayson’s Dad anywhere — but either way — she was a wonderful lady and Jayson’s son is a beautiful baby.

He coached against Jayson in HS. And there are pics of him with Jayson's mom at various things. He was clearly involved with Jayson.

I don’t think anyone said he wasn’t. But he and Jayson’s Mom broke up before Jayson was born, and he was raised primarily by his mom. His dad was playing college ball and then pro ball internationally when Jayson was a small child. But he coached him in AAU, and was in his life.

Yeah, didn’t mean to imply that he wasn’t. It was more just my reply to poster saying he couldn’t find any pics of his dad—they’re out there.

Yikes dude, first day on SoSH? It's all good natured.

I learned about the Tatum having a kid stuff while watching Celtics broadcasts--there were some joking interview questions asking if he was tired being a new dad. I learned Shane Larkin's dad was Barry Larking by reading articles when he signed with Boston. This really isn't TMZ level stuff.
What took you so long. ESPN mentioned who Shane’s Dad was pretty much every time they covered him in college at Miami. Lol.

I was basing it on the growth of last season too and where he is now starting.
Yup. Our baby boy is fast turning into an alpha. He's still several years away from reaching his strength apex as well......once he gains more explosiveness this kid is going to be something special here.

He’s 20. TWENTY.

Has there been a better 20 year old since LeBron?
Kyrie, AD, Bender, and Towns for sure. I don't recall how old Howard was when he broke through in Orlando and Booker is also in the conversation but Tatum is certainly on the short list.

I guess we know where you stand on the “Who sucks more, Dragan or Marquese?” debate.

Good thing we can look this up.

Last year JT had 7.1 WS. As a 19-year-old. That was the 19th best season by WS ever by a player that was 20 or younger on February 1 of the season. (Tatum has a March birthday).

Here are the top 20. They are all 20 except JT and Howard's 16th ranked season:
LBJ = 14.3
Magic = 10.5
AD = 10.4
Shaq = 10.4
Chris Paul = 10.4
Drummond = 9.9
AD (the Dantley version) = 9.8
Howard = 8.6
KAT = 8.3
Myles Turner = 8.0
KD = 7.9
Webber = 7.8
Tony Parker = 7.7
Elton Brand = 7.5
KG = 7.3
Howard = 7.3
Kirilenko = 7.3
John Drew = 7.1
JT
Chris Bosh = 6.8

If you expand it to 21 year olds, LBJ is the only 20 year old season to make the top 16; names on the 21 year old and under list that are not above include MJ, Tim Duncan, Dolph Schayes, Tracy McGrady, Luol Deng, Kobe, Marques Johnson, and Easy Ed McCauley (10.6 WS in 1949-50 for STL ranks 16th all-time).

Did you seriously just put Bender in a group with Kyrie, AD, KAT, Young Howard, Booker and Tatum?

I have no idea how anyone could answer this yet. He certainly has a shot at being the second-best 20 year old ever, behind Lebron (being better than Lebron at 20 seems pretty unlikely). There is a reasonable argument that he had the best 19 year old season ever last year and it was almost certainly in the top 5.

I think it's unlikely that he ends up as a top 5 20 year old by most measures simply because a lot of the measuring sticks aggregate and he won't play enough minutes. But, I don't think I'd bet against him if we are measuring quality by rate stats.

Dragan Bender might not even be the best 20 year old Bender to play in the NBA.

Defense is hard to judge though, especially since no one on the Suns plays defense. If you put Booker on team like the Celtics, maybe he looks better defensively. Look no further than Kyrie Irving to see the impact it has.

Tatum also gets a little bit of advantage for his March birthday is just after the Feb age deadline. So he will have a decent chunk of his age 20 season whole being 21 years old. Compared to Lebrons age 20 season when he spent the first few months being 19

If you want to go by WS/48, and eliminating anyone who didn't start at least 50 games, the top 19 year old seasons are:

AD: .159 (6.1)
JT: .139 (7.1)
Howard: .131 (7.3)
Kyrie: .125 (4.1; only 51 games started)
Bosh: .119 (6.2)
Bynum: .112 (4.2)

The top 20 year old seasons are:
AD = .212 (10.4)
LBJ = .203 (14.3)
Jokic = .185 (6.7)
Drummond = .182 (9.9)
Paul = .178 (10.4)
Shaq = .163 (10.1)
AD (age 19)
Webber = .154 (7.8)
KAT = .151 (8.3)
Myles Turner = .151 (8.0)
JT (age 19)
Howard = .137 (8.6)
Biedrins = .136 (6.7)
