Another banner day for Mr. Duran (so far). I suppose it's arguably a positive that he's learning about 100 different lessons about being a major-league CF in the span of a few weeks, but the red flags are starting to pile up.

This guy has done nothing to deserve anyone having his back as he jaws with fans. Also fun to watch him not jump to his feet after he dropped that deep fly into the wall. He’s a lazy poser.

Whatever we hoped he might be, well, he isn’t. Give someone else a try. I want JBJ back.

That’s the lamest fucking excuse I’ve ever heard. And let’s be honest, it’s bullshit. He lost his cool, again, because he fucked up in the field, again, and acted unprofessionally. Again.

He has no place on a major league club.

Lost in the shuffle here is what a great teammate he is. How many guys would intentionally open themselves up to getting a virus just to make sure his team wouldn't be able to have him fuck up every game in Canada? #trueleader

Duran was also caught flipping the bird to fans in AAA after he had an argument with an umpire and would regularly wear politically charged t-shirts to batting practice

I remain unimpressed even after his Post Game interview on NESN. Had his head down for most of the interview. Said fans were throwing water bottle caps at him and he asked them to stop. He's not a centerfielder under any circumstances. Second base and learning on "the fly" at the Major League Level.

He doesn't hit much better than JBJ and not even in the same league defensively. This is the MAJOR Leagues. Not Instructional ball.

What does it say about the organization that they continue to play him every day? It’s as big of an indictment as I can think of.
And cut a guy who is as classy as they come and plays great D. That move makes no sense when the other half of the move is keeping/playing this loser.

Their best pure CF prospect, Miguel Bleis, is in the Florida Complex League. Ceddanne Rafaela, who is having himself a year with Portland, may be ready sooner than anticipated even though he’s just turning 22.

The Sox have committed to Duran for the rest of this year. Let’s hope the older guys can settle him down.

Forget settling him down, maybe they can teach him to catch a baseball and not quit mid play.

I'm really shocked he wasn't dealt at the deadline. He is going to have negative value by the end of the season.
I am still shocked they didn’t trade him last summer deadline when he was dripping with hype. The defensive limitations were plain to see. I don’t know how the makeup and character and issues were not.

I had a similar thought -- at some point, aren't you better served to send the kid down for 10 days to clear his head? But cutting JBJ suggests they have bought us all a ticket on the Duran-in-CF train for the foreseeable future, otherwise they'd have kept JBJ around for exactly this eventuality.
The line between "defensive versatility/ flexibility" and "playing someone woefully out of position" has never been more evident than this season (and last season too with Schwarber, Bobby, Arroyo anywhere other than middle infield...).

Injuries have exacerbated this some, but at what point does Bloom admit that it's better to have a guy competent in one language than completely inarticulate in two?

We need some evidence of these claims. Not that it would surprise anyone, but we can’t just have these accusations on the main board without supporting evidence.

They threw water bottle caps at him? Plastic water bottle caps? The Red Sox should sign those fans and put them in the bullpen

In his defense, he is probably pretty fearful of something hitting him. He certainly can't see stuff approaching him very well.

I remember the scouting report before he arrived saying he was a poor defender who takes bad routes and has trouble tracking the ball.

I said to myself, he is a good athlete and super fast, he will outrun his bad reads.

I could not have been more wrong. He is Hanley level bad in the outfield.

Can you teach someone to get better reads or if your instincts are bad, they are always going to be bad.

It was early April in Syracuse, I don't have video, but I remember people talking about it. He was ejected from a game he didn't even play in. As for the other thing, ask anyone that works for the WooSox.

Whatever Bloom’s “plan” is, if it involves keeping this waste of payroll on the roster, as a fan, I don’t want any part of it.

Would his reaction to fans throwing stuff at him be more acceptable if he was playing better?

Road fans do dumb things sometimes. Have security take care of it and play the game.
Yep. He didn't handle the situation perfectly.

On the other hand, fans were throwing stuff at him (apparently). You go deal with that while having the worst day at work you ever had and let me know how calmly you react.

He pretty clearly isn't a big league player right now. That doesn't mean we should ignore the fact that fans were throwing stuff at him.

I don’t see his finger up, but is Duran doing that thing where where he blows into a closed fist and the middle finger pops up?

Do we have evidence they were throwing things?? KC fans are good. Why would
they randomly throw things against a shitty player as they’re in the midst of kicking his teams ass up and down the field?

Well, we have his testimony. If he's lying that obviously changes things, but we pretty routinely give players the benefit of the doubt in situations like this.

They are what they are. Last in the AL East. Sub .500 baseball. Huge payroll. Questionable trading deadline moves. At this point, the best way to describe the organization is, "irrelevant."

I don’t trust his words after all his excuses, frankly. That sucks but it is what it is. Maybe that puts me in the wrong. But KC fans throwing things at a bad Boston team makes little sense. I hope there is video, I can apologize and the fan(a) are barred from any MLB stadium.

Well now we can’t trade him to the NL especially the East. Watch out if he’s ever at Citizens Bank Park

I could also say that Duran (and every other player) hears crap from fans every time he plays on the road. Have you ever sat in or near the front row in the OF? Why would he react like that this time unless something unique happened?

I dunno. Occam’s razor. The story doesn’t make sense. KC fans randomly throwing stuff at an unknown center fielder in a day game between two shitty teams? Or a guy having a shit day is finding a vent for his frustration. The latter sounds more likely. Add in that this is the same guy who makes media mis-steps and quits on a play where he screwed up? Temperament issues seem on brand.

He could be telling the truth. Or it could be something a little bit in between. Like he got teased, escalated it, then the fans escalated it back. But the suggestion he is selling that he was innocently minding his business is setting off my common sense and bullshit detectors.

It’s interesting - I was just looking at his statistics, and clearly they are meaningless - he hasn’t committed an [official] error at the major league level…

The unique thing that happened was that he embarrassed himself on consecutive defensive plays and lost his shit when he got taunted by fans.

He’s an immature dimwit who lacks basic self control. A MLB team that had the slightest sense of dignity would demote his dumb ass immediately.

Because he’s a massive failure on a failing team and very well overreacted to something someone said about his horrible play.

This is weird. If there weren’t bottle caps - and I’m sure the Royals are working hard to prove that - then Duran is a freaking weird-ass little child making up crazy lies instead of being at all remorseful or capable of introspection.

My biggest problem with Duran has nothing to do with his attitude, anti-vax stance, politics, or random misplays in the outfield. FAR more concerning is the fact that he is 25 years old (almost 26) and isn't good at baseball.

It's not like he's 20 years old and working out the kinks. He can't hit major league pitching and despite his speed is a horrible defensive OF. There is a reason he has limited trade value, he isn't any good.

And this is the guy the Sox have presumably been considering a key piece of their future OF plans. Not a great look for their evaluative acumen.

Again, plastic screw-on bottle caps ... meaning you'd need a heck of an arm, in the wind, to get them anywhere near Duran from the bleachers

Don’t forget he also lied to the media in the post game after his last meltdown too.
This is the most unlikeable player the Sox have had in a long long time.

So, he was a 2nd baseman at the beginning of his career, right? Was he unplayably bad as an infielder or was there some other reason for the move? It certainly feels like he might be unplayably bad in the OF :(

Yeah, I’m wondering how bad he must have been at 2B to be moved to the outfield. He can’t be this bad.
