If Dad is in sight and Dad does not look freaked out, then everything is fine. In the first years of life, kids spend a lot of time looking at their parents and gauging the threat risk of any situation by how the parent looks. This is especially visible in the first couple years when kids get mobile and start exploring the environment. If you watch them, you will notice that every once in a while they look at their parents to see if what they are doing is “OK”. As long as the parent is nodding and smiling, they can go on with their exploration. If they look back and see the parent looking at them and looking horrified or scared, they will crawl or walk or run back to the parent as quickly as possible. This a great experiment to try on you toddler. Be aware, if you do it too much they will get used to it and ignore you, just like they do later.
