This answers the Aiken question I assume.

I'd guess so---one of the scenarios for why you'd bother with Aiken cut.

Imagine a late round pick.

BB ... this morning:

Three quarterbacks not a hard decision. Asked if it was a challenging decision to keep three quarterbacks, Belichick paused briefly before saying, "I wouldn't say so. Fortunately, we have three good players at that position, three players we have a lot of confidence in. I'm sure there are some teams in the league that don't have that feeling about that position. They may not have one, I don't know. I've been in that position before. It's not a good place to be. We're fortunate we have three good players there. That's a good situation."

Expected it yesterday as the clock ticked til 4:00 and we had one unnamed cut left to make.

Was BB calling a bluff? "Actually, we don't have to cut him. But our LS is suddenly available..."

Return will be interesting. Not expecting much.

Edit: the fact we were talking to 3 teams, maybe we will get something.

BB is the ultimate troll, isn't he?

A fourth that could be a third would be nice.

Jeff Matthews worked out with Patriots today. Any chance he's QB #3, and/or practice squad material? Can a guy cut by the Falcons be out practice squad QB, or do they get the first shot if he clears waivers?

I'm sure it's been said before, but wouldn't you love to hear the press conferences if BB were president?

He'd probably say stuff like "We don't have a plan yet" just hours before sending air strikes.

Oh wait

Good job by Houston to wait until preseason was over.
I would think trading Mallet happened on our timeline. Giving the rook enough games to prove we can trust him at #2. I would guess Texas has been watching Garapolo as closely as we have.

RT @RapSheet: Ryan Mallett has been traded to the #Texans, source says
He's been following this closely and suggested on NFLN yesterday that a deal may be coming. His focus then was that anyone behind Houston could not wait for him to be cut, because the Texans would claim him.

So one of two things happened. His winning a spot on 53-man persuaded Houston it could nt continue waiting. Or, someone behind Houston offered more than what Houston will be paying.

Before being critical of Houston, I need to see evidence that BB was in fact willing to trade Mallet before the 4th X game

This is all about roster space, probably why Aiken was cut yesterday. They weren't keeping three qbs with garrapolo being ahead of schedule. Instead of cutting him yest, which I'm sure the league expected. He called there bluffs, and at least got a bag of balls.

Who is "they"???
I doubt that Pats had to give the Texans a 6th rounder to entice them to take Mallet.

Utterly predictable haul.  I dared to pipe dream about Johnson being part of this but that was a giant longshot.

A 6th rounder? Bill got worked. It's better than cutting him but the fact that they couldn't at least get a 4th is underwhelming.

Why were people expecting more than a 6th for a third sting QB on the last year of his deal who hasn't had a single impressive quarter of preseason action so far? This just tells me he was on the bubble and the Pats were lucky the Cowboys were interested so the Texans had to make a move and not just wait to pick him up on waivers.

Mallett for a 6th? Meh, but beats just cutting him and getting zip.

But then we'll find out that the "they" in the poorly worded tweet isn't NE and it's Mallett and a 6th for _______.

Heh.

I, too wish the market value for a backup QB in the final year of his contract and with virtually no live snaps under his belt was better.

I think that criticism is harsh.

They spent a 3rd on Mallett, got a backup for 3 years and got a 6th

What's wrong with that?

BB has lost a step and the game has passed him by! Also, he's arrogant!

Well, the part that's underwhelming is that is what his value was. That's not BB's fault.

Well, I'm certain they had a better return in mind when they picked Mallett in the 3rd round, but considering I haven't seen a lick of improvement from him in 4 years with the Patriots, getting a 6th in the last year of his deal is pretty solid.

Right. Because that would be a pretty dumb assumption. However wondering if it was a 4th for a 6th and Mallett isn't.

Mallett had a lot of good reviews coming out of college and dropped because of character issues, but he has shown absolutely no reason to suggest he's a starting QB in the NFL. That's obviously a slightly tainted view since he hasn't played any real snaps, but reflect it against Cassel, who went out and won 11 games after looking like shit in preseason over the years and brought back a 2nd with Vrabel attached. I would have hoped for at least a 4th if there really was competition, but a 6th was probably a realistic haul for him.

Sure, but they can't extrapolate and say "oh, if Mallett had played in a real game, he would have totally looked awesome, you guys! Please give us a 4th, we promise he'll be good!", because Matt Cassel is about the only example I can find of a guy looking like shit in preseason and actually being a solid QB in real action. Honestly, I can't think of anyone else who fits that profile.

Lots of 3rd rounders don't work out. Thankfully he wasn't tested, but the team was comfortable with him as back up for several years during which they did not have to worry about addressing the position. That's value, but people hate paying for insurance.

They spent a third on him got three years of cheap labor at that roster spot, then cashed in. BB doesn't even value a productive RB for a couple million(Blount), never mind a Kyle Orton type backup for 2 million. The league clearly doesn't think much of Mallet.

Drafted in the 3rd, got almost no meaningful snaps, hasn't looked remotely close to an NFL QB.

But he was worth a 1st or 2nd because of the logo.  That's what's wrong with that.
