Later on in the show, Mazz clarified that Nomar is the last superstar the Sox drafted in the 1st Round. He conceded Mookie and Lester are superstars the Sox drafted since Nomar. No way on Ellsbury, according to Mazz.

Mazz then got fixated on the Sox not drafting a better player at #7 with the two opportunities they had this decade. Mazz views Benitendi as an average player who does not hit for enough power for his position.

So he moved the goalposts to suit his argument. Sounds about right. At least he's admitting it on those players, though I'm still on the fence about whether Lester is a "superstar." I wonder why not Pedroia? Of all the positions that get shortchanged, 2B is usually at the top of the list and he's been one of the best in the last 10 years or so.

That makes a bit more sense. Like I said, I turned off the radio once they went into this discussion because it was coo-coo bananas. He was completely all over the place.

Unreal America
I was on my way to urgent care a few minutes ago (I cut my finger ) so I had the radio on to listen to the Baseball Reporters. Mazz was on and he was bitching about DD’s lack of success drafting, which I don’t think is unreasonable.

But then he veered off into crazy town, asking, “What was the last superstar the Red Sox drafted?” He went through a litany of 70s and 80s Sox: Rice, Lynn, Clemens, Ojeda, Mo, Tudor, Hurst, John Valentin before saying, “the last superstar was Nomar. That’s it!” He asked the coolest guy in any room, Jim Murray and he agreed, Nomar was the last superstar the Red Sox drafted.

That’s it.

Not Lester or Ellsbury or Pedroia or Papelbon or Rizzo or Buchholz or Bogaerts or JBJ or Benintendi or Devers or Mookie fucking Betts. That’s it. Nomar.
Every pick has been a miss since 1994.

Never mind that the outfield is home grown, three quarters of the infield is home grown, including the catcher. And if you’re going to consider Valentin and Bob Ojeda as superstars, I’ll take Buchholz and Devers.

I get brain cramps happen. Mazz is human but I mean Betts just won the MVP last year for a team that was incredible. That’s pretty dumb. And Murray is even dumber for not bringing something to the table and correcting his boss.

Jesus, this station sucks.
This is because guys like Mazz create a narrative and rarely, if ever, evolve it. The argument you cite was the one that he was making 6+ years ago, before the youth movement of 2014-15. The fact that the core of the team is home grown, and that they'e won three division titles and a World Series title, is irrelevant. Because the narrative cannot change.

Considering the expected outcome of a late 1st round pick is fringe major leaguer at best, expecting the Sox to draft a hall of fame caliber talent with a bunch of picks mostly in the 20s and 30s seems like a bit of a high bar. They've only had 2 picks in the top 10 in all the years since Nomar, 1 looks like a total bust and the other is a good player that isn't even in his prime yet.

Glorified G fades out...

Felger: (Clears throat.) 'Ok Tony. After last night, I'll ask this question. If the Bruins go on to lose this series, where does it rank in the list of worst losses in Boston sports history?'

Mazz: 'Oh, way up there. WAY up there. Total choke job.'

Felger: 'I mean, forgot about the officiating. I know everyone's going to want to talk about that today, but just leave that out of it. You're the better team.

Mazz: 'Absolutely, Mike.'

Felger: 'You have more talent. You should win this series. And the Bruins have no one to blame but themselves for all the flopping and embellishing they did earlier in the series.'

Mazz: 'Totally.'

I put it on today to listen to some of the Bruins reaction. How does anyone listen to this? After an hour I want to slit my wrists.

As a huge fan of this show in 2011 or so, this is a mess. No wonder why the ratings are up. It's mouth breather radio.

Didn't listen but I know Felger is a big hockey guy. Was he as fair and balanced as possible or was it all gagging sounds and ripping on Rask for wilting in the moment again (I'm not saying that's how I feel, just asking if that's where he's gone). I'm assuming Mazz is piling on the "they choked, Mike, and Rask is a loser" bandwagon and Jim Murray is complaining about the "bums" (his favorite word) that didn't show up for the game or in any of the other games they lost.

Two goals on four shots Mike!!!!!!! We should break up the first line. They clearly can’t do it in the playoffs!

To be fair they said they aren’t ready to trade Pasta yet. He’s only 25. If he was 30 he’d.m be gone

I know it isn't F&M, but hearing Jim Murray on the Baseball Reporters as he openly talks about how much he hates baseball is such a bad look. Imagine CHB leading off his stories with how much he hates writing? Or Cedric Maxwell lamenting his hatred of basketball before each tip?

I guess you don't have to be a fan of the team (and some would say in their business they aren't SUPPOSED to be fans of the team) but man it's a buzzkill having a guy on THE BASEBALL REPORTERS openly and requently how much he hates baseball every chance he gets

The only thing Jim Murray likes about his job is being able to rip on anyone and everyone involved in sports and get paid to do it. Other than his obvious Bruins fandom, he doesn't seem particularly passionate about any of the teams and seems to be one of those fans who just watches to make fun of guys for failing to do what he'd never even get the chance to try. I'm willing to bet that if he called any one of the Red Sox pitchers a "gutless bum" (one of his favorite expressions) to his face, he'd get popped in the mouth. And, of course, his justification for calling them gutless bums is because they were failing to get outs before giving up leads, which is clearly the same thing as being a craven loser and nothing at all to do with the talent on the other teams.

Jim Murray wears sunglasses inside because the lights hurts his eyes. He's the toughest guy we all know and he should be allowed to question anything that he wants.

Mazz must have been in his full glory today ripping on this team.

Murray probably still has a priapism because the bullpen blew the lead twice and then loss.

So glad I stopped listening to this station after 10AM.

It’s been pretty much all Celtics today. Felger loves the NBA offseason. Lot of ripping of Kyrie for his, “what does government mean to you?”, question to Brad.
You know, given Felger's outright disdain for the "green teamers," I should have expected that they'd go with the low-hanging fruit. Actually, given the show, I should have expected that anyway.

Yes, it's just plain awful that the bullpen (I am excluding Johnson because he was a starter called up for emergency duty) gave up 2 runs in 11 innings. Or,. you could say that thy gave up 1 run in the 4 innings of regulation baseball. That's not spectacular, but it is very good. A team with a bullpen with a 2.25 RA is a team without a bullpen problem.

The bullpen was excellent in that game, no question about it. But that sort of stuff rarely matters to hot takez guys like F&M and Murray.

Felger has been making the case all show today that maybe Ainge didn't know about the Rose Rule when he traded for Kyrie and maybe the Celtics didn't know they couldn't trade for AD if they traded for Kyrie

Even for Felger, this seems like an extreme reach. The guy who is paid to know all the rules may not know one that was a big deal when it was announced and didn't know all the ins, outs, and whathaveyous for acquiring a player they'd targeted already?

If anyone believes that, I'm sure Mike has a bridge he can sell them.

I'm also certain all teams have a CBA/salary cap/budgeting team that knows all loopholes and caveats in and out and backwards. But his main point brought up 10 times today was MAYBE Danny didn't know and therefore trading for Kyrie ALSO screwed them because they couldn't get AD and MAYBE Danny didn't know the rule

(he also asked Jimmy Stewart if he heard anything and he said he did not)

KI was traded to the Celts in August 2017 about 1 1/2 years before AD said he wanted out of NO. Should Ainge not have traded for KI who was then considered one of the top PGs in the game and a big upgrade from IT? At the time it looked like the Celts were buying at a huge discount.

Felger has taken his hot takz and trolling Celtic fans to new murky depths.

The trade didn't work out, but there isn't a GM in the league that wouldn't have jumped at that trade at the time. Results oriented thinking at its finest.

He doesn't know what it is (in his defense, a lot of people don't know the specifics) but he knows "it's some furcockta rule that prevented them from trading for AD if they had Kyrie"

I had F&M on my computer only because I left it on after Zo and Beetle. Felger's solution to the B's cap: Trade Krejci to Buffalo for a 1st round pick.
I'm sure the Sabres will be happy to make that happen. After all, why should they want a first round pick when they have a veteran forward who is closer to the end of the line? Makes perfect sense.

Now the trade Rask and Krejci calls are coming to clear cap space for Bobrovsky. This is comedy.
In Felger's defense, he admitted it was his fault for opening the door to the conversation and shut the callers down pretty quickly.

Other than that, and I mentioned this in the T&R thread. I have no patience for this show during the doldrums of summer when they really only have the Red Sox to talk about unless something major happens with the Patriots during the off season. I'll turn it on at the start of my commute, give it 2-5 mintues and if I don't like the subject I'll switch to a podcast or Spotify.

Heard Big Jim on BST last night debating the 04 Pats vs 07 Pats vs 14 Pats with Holley and DJ.

Murray describes the 07 season as a joyless exercise. Says he only enjoyed two games all season (Cowboys and Colts). Watching his team win 18 out of 19 games was a miserable experience for Jim.

December was a grind, I will give him that. But those beat downs of the Bills, Dolphins, Redskins, Chargers, Bengals, etc. early in the year were epic and so much fun. For at least 3 months that was the most fun I’ve ever had as a sports fan. It was like Madden coming to life.

He is an idiot on “07. Fueled by Spygate, they were out to destroy the League that year, and destroy it they did. Everyone else in the NFL knew it and saw it coming. Christ, Florio wrote a piece on it in PFT early on.

There is no other way to account for a 52-7 beatdown of Joe Jackson Gibbs, who Belichick has immense respect for.

Gibbs, of course, had nothing to do with Spygate in particular or the NFL in general. Belichick was like, fuck it — we’re burning the village.

I thought Snyder or someone had said something, but it’s been so long.

It also could have been Belichick knowing Gibbs knew it wasn’t a big deal (Gibbs probably has his own gamesmanship history) and Gibbs staying silent.

I think that’s probably what pissed Bill off the most. A lot of the old school coaches that knew what was what in terms of the gray area stuff they all did, and none of them going “uh yeah. Mountain out of molehill”.

Murray is not a fan of Boston sports. He is a fan of Boston teams winning titles. The one exception may be the Bruins, which would make a lot of sense since I know plenty of hockey fans who truly believe that no other athletes are as tough so therefore they don't command as much respect.

Bottom line, Murray is a toolbag and not a real fan. He derives more joy from failure, so he can rip on it, than victory, unless it's the Bruins.
