Breaking news: sources tell @FOXSports the NFL has zeroed in on a locker room attendant w Patriots who allegedly took balls from officials locker room to another area on way to field. Sources say they have interviewed him and additionally have video. Still gauging if any wrong doing occurred with him but he is strong person of interest

So they could punish BB and the Pats, whether deserved or not, instead of admitting that this was a huge media  clusterfuck over a non-existent event that they let get completely out of control.

In general, a confession made by the accused person during a witch hunt is a false confession.  They might not even care what the truth is.  It's hard to believe they haven't already found it after doing a week long comprehensive investigation.

Well, if they're looking for a New Englander who knows all about deflating balls.

If the investigators had already done close to 40 interviews by Thursday, there's no way they didn't interview the ballboy, right? So they're leaking this to put pressure on the ballboy, either because they think he's lying or because they want to scare him into a false confession.
Maybe when they interviewed ball guy he said he took the balls straight to the field from the official's locker room. Then after reviewing the surveillance video they see he took a little detour that he forgot to mention. Now they're "zeroing" in on him, which is to say trying to figure why he didn't tell them in the interview that he stopped on the way to take a piss, and gauging if this is evidence of wrongdoing.

The NFL’s response was only that “we are not commenting on any aspects of the investigation.”

This leak was at least a tit-for-tat reaction to BB's press conference.

This is not far removed from fighting Putin in Russia when he has your ass thrown in jail.

There are counter-measures. It's up to Kraft whether he uses them.

I can tell you, as a Jets fan, nothing would make me happier than to have them retire.  Seriously, the only thing more amusing than this whole stupid investigation is Pats Fans' reaction to it.  At the end of the day, nothing will come of the investigation, you'll have another Super Bowl appearance, and, possibly, another Super Bowl win.

This from way back on the 22nd:

The referee "shall be the sole judge as to whether all balls offered for play comply with these specifications" and the balls "remain under the supervision of the Referee until they are delivered to the ball attendant just prior to the start of the game," according to Rule 2, Section 1.

A person with intimate knowledge of the process told USA TODAY Sports the ball attendant is a uniformed official – generally the same person each week at a given stadium – who comes to the locker room to pick up the balls and takes them to the officials' locker room for testing.

The ball attendant delivers the balls to the ball boys – usually four provided by the home team and two traveling with the visiting team – who make sure their quarterback's preferred balls get into the game, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly.

At halftime, the balls return to the officials' locker room, the person said. So, if proper protocol is followed, the only opportunity to manipulate the balls is minutes before kickoff or during the game on the sideline, where there's a risk of anyone in the stadium and dozens of TV cameras seeing it.

Is it possible locker room attendant in this case is the uniformed ball attendant? And this is just (another) big nothing burger?

EDIT to add: And that the uniformed ball attendant is not in the employ of the NEP?

Knowing the demographic on this board, I can only imagine how many billable hours have been lost this past week (I work for a plaintiffs' firm that does almost everything on contingency, but man, it's been tough to cut down on the size of the pile on my desk lately).

I have never wanted the Pats to curbstomp an opponent so badly, and I don't even hate the Seahawks.
I'm wondering how many leaks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Privilege Waiver Pop.

Can anyone clarify this? If the ball attendant doesn't even work for the Pats, what is the story here?

I get why you might not understand, but my favorite football team is in the Superbowl. I can't enjoy it when 70% of the world is accusing them of cheating. I think the reaction is pretty apt.

It's an expression; I think pictures of Goodell with an underage girl or murdering a small boy would probably get him fired.  Probably.

I see Goodell has reached the Ryan Braun stage of the investigation. With the next leak we'll probably learn that the ball boy is also anti-Semitic.

Sorry if this is an unfair expectation, but to me SOSH is a magical place where miracles can happen. I expect one of you SOSHers to work your SOSH-fu to get NDT and Bill Nye to publicly admit they were wrong. Given the attention they are getting a public reversal would actually shut a lot of people up.

I fully expect the patriots to make mental mistakes in the super bowl especially in the second half, this has to be taking an emotional toll on the players unfortunately.  Just so unfortunate after one of the most enjoyable season I can remember this is the way the final two weeks before the super bowl play out.  I truly feel in the end the truth on this will come out, and IF it is a sting that went south along or rogue leaks by other coaches and/or executives with an axe to grind I hope the Pats use all methods possible to go after the NFL leadership and clean house to prevent this BS from EVER happening again.  The NFL's leadership has shown it's incompetence over and over and over, its so-f-ing far overdue for a house cleaning.  Across the board the incompetence is staggering.

Talking about 2 PSI...  think about that in a grand scheme regardless of what side you fall, it's just insane.

FOX Sports has learned that the NFL has zeroed in on a New England Patriotslocker-room attendant in connection with the scandal of improperly inflated footballs used in the AFC championship game against Indianapolis.

The person of interest was already interviewed by the league. The NFL is trying to determine whether any wrongdoing by this individual occurred, sources tell FOX Sports.

There is surveillance video showing the attendant taking the footballs from the official's locker room into another room at Gillette Stadium before bringing them out to the field, sources tell FOX Sports.

The NFL confiscated 11 of 12 footballs at halftime that were under the league-mandated air pressure of 12.5 PSI. The league has since launched an investigation into the matter.

Is there anything legally that would prevent the Patriots from holding a press conference and playing all possible security video from the stadium on game day?  It's not like the video was confiscated by police and is evidence in a crime.  Releasing the video publicly wouldn't be poisoning potential jury pools or anything.

Basically answer the leak by saying "you mean this ball boy seen on this video picking up the bag of balls from the referee's room and delivering them to the field? Watch him go."

I mean, how would it be possible for the league investigators to have any video from the stadium that the Patriots don't already have at their disposal?

NDT had the opportunity to turn this whole thing around with one tweet and instead he gave it a big boost in the wrong direction. Unbelievable.

The players could give a rat's ass about this shitshow. Believe me, if they lose the game it's because Seattle is the better team. Anyone who uses this as an excuse but mocked Irsay for using deflated balls is being a hypocrit.

I wonder what Goddell is going to think about all those billable hours when Wells just brings in a local science teacher to explain the ideal gas laws for the final presentation in March.
