This was epic and should be shared as much as possible. Sometimes the truth hurts.

The Olbermann thing is so dumb. Being 13th or 14th in production out of 20 players with >12000 PA is hardly a point of criticism. That fact alone puts him as an all-time great.

And giving him a hard time for playing the whole schedule? Seriously?

The defense thing is very true though.

Oh, you're right, I missed that sentence.

"Recordings of Sheppard are used to welcome fans to Yankee Stadium at times, but Jeter's introduction will be its last in-game airing."

I loved the Olberman rant, but I still think he missed the most important issue; that Derek Jeter gets all the credit for being this selfless, humble guy, while in reality he is having a retirement tour that would make Brett Favre blush. That is what upsets me the most, the hypocrisy of the whole thing. If a guy has to have an entire season dedicated to people talking about what a humble proffesional he is, than he isn't a humble proffesional. Olberman touched on it briefly, but it just blows my mind with all these events and commercials talking about how great Jeter is, and the best trait he has to most people is how much a selfless person he is.

That was awesome. Especially since Olberman is a Yankee fan isn;t he?

He claims to not be anymore after the Old Timer's Day incident from a few years back.

For the last several years, political commentator Keith Olbermann has served as an in-stadium play-by-play man for the Yankees’ Old-Timers’ Day. But the Yankees are making a change, The Post has learned.
The Yankees were not happy with Olbermann posting a photo on Twitter earlier this season of a coach signaling pitches to their batters in the on-deck circle. So they decided to bounce the liberal loudmouth and will have Bob Wolff and Suzyn Waldman provide the commentary for today’s game instead.

Look it was down right embarrassing for that NY sportswriter a few weeks ago writing that Jeter is the third greatest Yankee ever. It just seems that too many of today's fans have no appreciation for the history of the game.  Personally I know several Yankee fans of my age (60's) that see Jeter as a HOFamer but not in the ability class of a DiMaggio, Mantle or even in the top 10 Yankees. Glad for Mr. Olberman exposing some of Jeter's warts.

Wasn't sure if the "gift baskets" reference was intentional... until Olbermann closed with "Yeah, Jeets."

Awesome. I've already posterized every MFY fan in my office and Facebook feeds.

He's right to point out the cutoff age at around 41-42. Because 20 years of Jeter does mean a huge population of fans only ever know Jeter as Captain Constant. But I like how Olbermann then canards the "longevity" arguments to death.

I'm in the elevator with two of my neighbors last night and the wife says, my company just gave me 8 Legends Suite tickets for Thu. night but I'm not sure I want to go.  The husband looks at her and says, are you fucking kidding me right now?  She had no idea that Thu. is a big deal and was going to pass on the tickets.  I told her to scalp them.

So evidently if that game is rained out (which there is a reasonable chance of), it won't be rescheduled unless BAL needs to play it to decide home field advantage. Now there's something to root for.

Change of heart?

On Tuesday, Derek Jeter left open the possibility he won’t play at Fenway Park this weekend.

On Wednesday, Joe Girardi did the same — which increases the chances Thursday night’s game against the Orioles will be the last of Jeter’s Hall of Fame-bound career.

“No, not yet,’’ Girardi said when asked if he talked to Jeter about sitting out the three-game series against the blood rivals. “And that’s a better question when we get there.’’
Jeter said the same thing Tuesday when he explained he was taking it one game at a time.

Just realized that Bob Sheppard's voice will disappear entirely from YS with the last Jeter home game, and I see someone wrote a piece about that a few days ago:

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/11573959/bob-sheppard-voice-exit-derek-jeter-retirement-new-york-yankees

Would it be a good idea to use Sheppard's voice, at Fenway, for his last game?  Or at least during the "gift giving" ceremonies?  I think it might, but maybe that's sacrilegious to Yankee fans or something.  Or just a bad idea.  I'm non-committal!

If they lose they get eliminated on Wednesday (and are down 6-3 as I write this).

In which case his last ever home game has me believing he'll get pitches served to him on a platter all day and then all weekend (a la Wainwright).

So wait, today could have been his last game, right?  If tomorrow is rained out and they don't need to replay it, and he sits out Boston....this was it, right?

0-4?  Bottom of the 8th groundout to 1st base was his last appearance.

That's how I am seeing this, too. Yanks will be eliminated today. Finish career at home. I thought he would play out the schedule regardless but maybe not.

Ted Williams and Mo finished at home, Jete can too.  Olbermann was right about that.

Mickey Mantle finished his at Fenway, I saw his last full game (last game was a cameo appearance for 1 AB).  However, at that point Mantle had not announced he was retiring and did not decide until March to hang them up

Game might be delayed for 3 hrs or so, but that game gets played.  Yankees are not passing up 10 million in gate receipts (commissions on secondary market sales), concessions and merchandise sales.

Has Jeter ever said anything of interest in an interview? Literally the blandest star athlete of all time.

Everyone is sad that Jeeter Month is coming to an end.

Baseball should just shut down after Jeter's final at bat. Why even bother playing anymore games? That would be the best way to honor Derek. It's great that FINALLY at long last someone is showing him some respect and giving him some praise.

From the NY Post article about the potential for a rainout is this tidbit:

And despite the fact Thursday will be the first time in Jeter’s career he will play a game at Yankee Stadium without the Yankees being alive for the postseason, Brian McCann said it will be a “celebration.”

Is that true? They finished 3rd last year and 3rd in 2008, were they really never out of contention at home late in the season?

So how's the weather looking in The Bronx?

I see now if the game is "canceled" there is a possibility for rescheduling the game on Monday IF the game would affect the Orioles home field advantage.  So MFY Yankee fans are secretly hoping the rain comes, and the O's lose a game to two this weekend? Amirite?

He was hurt last year, and they finished on the road in 2008 (in Fenway, I believe)

Well last year he didn't play, and I don't have the energy to look up when YED was in 2008 and what their remaining schedule was.  So it's possible.  It's also possible that the Post got caught up in the hysteria like the rest of us and made a mistake.

Yeah, people have been citing this stat all season, one road game in 2008 and tonight is the second game overall.

Yankee Elimination Day 2008 was September 23rd, the first day of their season-ending road trip. They won the game, but were eliminated from playoff contention with the Red Sox victory over the Indians.
