Chris Forsberg: Celtics can take Derrick White into the Evan Fournier trade exception and add some time to use that. Celtics remain out of the tax by including Romeo Langford in the deal.

I think Pop is going to make a player of Romeo and quickly. Him and a first feels like a lot to give up. Might be a good deal anyway.
He made Bruce Bowen a player. And Matt Bonner. He's just not afraid to have guys who can only do one thing sitting there until he needs them to do that thing.

I hate this so much. Guy is only a year younger than Richardson, and makes more money, is a worse shooter, is a worse defender, is signed for a lot of years at an escalating price, and the only thing that he does better is get assists. Giving up a first and Romeo for him is a lot. Can anyone sell me on this? Seems awful. On court talent downgrade now plus we get worse in the future.
Well, there is absolutely a dire need on this team with JB/JT to get complimentary players with assists who complement things. If they think they are buying low on him, signed very reasonably through 2025, another tough D with exception corner 3 skills would be very useful on this team.

Don't know if I love trading a guy who is shooting well for a guard who can't shoot on a team whose biggest weakness is lack of shooting.

That’s a very steep price. The 1st being included seems like overkill

Let’s hope for a Schroder for a protected 1st kind of deal to make the pick a wash ?

I mean, the best way to sell it I think is that he did the things he did while playing with a team that is not good at basketball & hopefully with the Jays, this will look like buying low as he will hopefully be a good fit & be able to get them the ball in good places. He's also a very good free throw shooter, so there's a reasonable chance his 3s will kick back up on a better offensive team.

The other good thing is, draft sucks after top 5. & his contract isn't toooo out of whack & could look like a good value if he gets a bump from playing with better players.

I have always had an irrational like for JRich, though, so I'm still meh on it.

He could be staying now, which would disappoint me.
I think this deal makes it more likely he goes.. White is a better PG than RIchardson.

On the Smart/White comparison:

Edit- Hmm, DARKO graph won't show up... they are really similar.

White started almost every game for SAS. He is not a bench player.

RAPTOR absolutely loves Derrick White.
He started for a Spurs team that was winning 37% of their games, but he's not starting here (if you think he's starting, who goes to the bench?). In evaluating this trade from the Celtics' perspective, he's considered a bench player.

Would a Smart for Huerter/Delon Wright-ish deal now fit the roster? You've got some PG/defense from White and you'd have a legit backup in Wright.

I mean if you don’t like White (which I think would largely be because of his contract), I get it, but they gave essentially nothing of value up in the two players and a non-lottery pick in an awful draft.

DARKO thinks White is better than Richardson. By a lot. He's also younger.

Hard to be upset with the on court change this year.

Only potential downsides are the contract differences, how much you value a protected 1st rounder, and how much you value Romeo.

On the Smart/White comparison:
True. But they have 3 open roster spots and if Schroder leaves then Ime is down to 7 trusted rotation players, counting White.

Maybe I don't know enough about White, but his per-36 doesn't seem much to write home about.

He's at a career high in assists, with 6.6 per 36, but miserable three-point shooting and everything else is about what you'd expect for a starting guard in the NBA. J-Rich, Romeo, AND a first rounder? Some of those first rounders turn into useful players for other teams, Brad!

Maybe he's a better ballhandler than JRich and that's for sure where the Cs are short. If this means the end of Schroder, I'm in.

I assume the point of this trade is to allow them to trade Schroder for a better rotation piece or two (maybe a shooter)...
Also there are going to be a lot of buyouts

Wonder if the three-way with Schroder out and Reddish back is now in play---they could use a wing

I will say, the national people seemed to think White for Richardson and a 1st was an unbelievable steal... Romeo and a swap even that out.

It is worth noting we got Richardson for literally nothing a few months ago, his value is probably a 2nd at most.
So basically a 1st, a swap, a 2nd and Romeo for White.

Edit- also... this tells me what Marcus Smart's trade value is... slightly more than this package.

If it was my team, I would send Horford to the bench & have a lot of fun switching all 5 with White/Smart/JB/JT/TL.

Crunch time 5 of Smart, White, Tatum, Brown, Williams?

Is that enough shooting around the Jays?

It's a pretty damn good 5 otherwise.

Hope they don't regret letting Richardson go. I was pretty down on Langford; really didn't see much there, but, again, a definite risk. Still, you have to give to get.

Anymore pieces the Celts have to add?

Smells like an overpay and Brad got Ainged on this and kept on saying yes.

Romeo was a wasted asset, damn shame as we all that that pick (Philly-Sac) was going to be gold.

I hope White can play PG.

Not going to sweat the pick swap too much as it's a total unknown. Meanwhile, if the team finishes the season strong the 1st is in the 20s and certainly worth giving up for a good player under team control at a reasonable salary.

I think my only concerns are:
1. I am one of the board's bigger Romeo fans. I think he's a 3 and D monster in the making
2. 2028 is far far away.

in Pop's system, he could be

young players need minutes, he'll get them in SA
Got it. I agree that Pop could make something more of him. I'm just not bullish on his game, and he's shown virtually nothing to date, so he's not really an asset as far as the celtics are concerned, unless you consider trading him to stay under the tax is utilizing him as an asset.

If a 2028 pick swap is what puts someone over the edge on the deal, I don't understand it at all. That is six years from now. That's like three+ NBA roster cycles away. IMO, the NBA is about the actual players. White is a better player than Richardson and his distribution skills may be more valuable than the delta between their shooting.

2. 2028 is far far away.
I think the C’s won’t invest in the extension likely needed to find that out about Romeo.

I think the second part is the biggest variable in this trade, but it’s probably why SA made the deal. What were they gonna do, turn down the deal and lose the better player over the next 3 or so years because of a distant risk that they could be picking in the top 5 in 2028 and to avoid a perception they ‘overpaid.’
