Honest question, why not go blue tooth at this point? I'm an Android guy, but on both platforms, I'm pretty shocked at the people on trains or airports that are still using wired headphones.

I've got two pairs of bluetooth headphones. My small exercise ones that I use whenever I'm on the T, and my over ear noise canceling ones that I use for flights.
I do. My AirPods are the best. I love the charging case. I couldn’t find them yesterday and used wired ones, it was awful in a white person problem way.

Home button going away you get used to quickly. No big deal. I hate the Face ID, though. Sunglasses, unlocking in bed when half your face is in a pillow, unlocking to make a call while driving when you don’t want to look at the screen, unlocking while skiing with a helmet and goggles ...there are all of these little moments that crop up when it is a lousy solution and you end up using the code, which is a step back from the fingerprint.
I was very skeptical of FaceID but it took all of a day or two to get over it. I never wish I had TouchId.

You can add a second face in settings now. I added one of me with sunglasses. And whoever said it learns is correct, it says as much under the setting for the “alternate appearance.”

Have a 256gb silver Xs in the cart of the app store app ready for buying at 3 a.m. That'll suck but it's set up to be easy, hopefully the app doesn't shit the bed.

Did they do away with SE size phones?
Yes. This article details the products that are now discontinued, including the iPhone SE. The relevant passage:
Until it was killed off on Wednesday, the iPhone SE had been a rare budget-conscious device from Apple, priced at $350. It was smaller and more lightweight than other iPhones, too, still sporting the well-regarded iPhone 5 design. Plus, it had a headphone jack.

It's surprising that Apple discontinued the iPhone SE, since it's only a 2-year-old phone, and Apple just gave it an upgrade last year.

The cheapest iPhone is now the iPhone 7, which starts at $449.

Samsung phones are 1k as well. (The note 9)
I know, and it's insane. Pretty obvious now that the X was a test to see how many would actually spend a grand+; and since the answer is a decent amount you can imagine future iPhones will be a lot more than a grand going forward.

I prefer small phones, so I am sad to hear about the SE being discontinued.

I've only heard bad things about bluetooth, pairing and sound problems. Airpods I imagine use a hack or something to get around the issues but probably only works that great with recent iPhones and the watch.

My AirPods and Bose QuietComfort II's never lose connection and have good-to-very good audio quality.

Can anyone elaborate on the dual sim aspect. I have a T-Mobile account, and one with Freedom Mobile in Canada...want to run both out of one device, but should I get the device through T-Mobile or Freedom Mobile? What’s the lock/unlock policy on that, anyway?

I can’t imagine it’s locked so you have to use your main provider for both sims - kind of defeats the purpose doesn’t it?

This might’ve been kind of true in like 2010 (or anything very cheap). I have wireless headphones for commuting and ones that I leave at work and they both work flawlessly. As do my Bluetooth mice, keyboards, speakers, etc.

Bluetooth uses lossy compression. If you add that to something that is already lossy compressed, like Spotify or mp3 files, you are compounding the problem and will end up with stuff that sounds noticeably worse.

But it depends on what type of compression your Bluetooth headphones and your device support too. If using an iPhone you want to make sure your headphones support AAC over Bluetooth.

Sure but most people (self included) don’t care THAT much about sound quality. It works. It’s convenient. It’s easy. Basically the Apple philosophy (minus the beautiful design).

You're 100% right - I was just answering the question of why everyone doesn't use them.

I have an 8 and have no need for an XS and can't upgrade at a discount until May but I still want one bad. I'd sell the 8, which I own outright, but I took it out of the case a few weeks back and some how the back got cracked. Looks like replacing the back is a real bitch. The phone is perfect otherwise too.

I am interested in details here. Do you mean trade in?

I might be the only person who prefers the old contracts with discounts to be still available.

It kinda sucks I have to burn a day of PTO to sit here and wait for FedEx...but dammit, it's beyond even wanting, I need the new phone. Went to bed at 88% power, woke up and checked my email, sent 5 texts and I was at 26%. This thing is fucked six ways from Sunday.

They're shipping via UPS.

And my phone was supposed to be delivered today but in MyChoice it's still sitting in China. I called and UPS said it's sitting in Louisville. Regardless it's not getting to my customer center in Harrisburg today whatsoever.

Even with a new phone on the way, you should take advantage of the battery replacement program.

$30 to get a new one and if your are still within Apple Care on your 7 and your battery health is below 80% (you can check it in settings) they'll do it for free. My battery health on my 7 was at 83% and they replaced it for free. This program expires at the end of the year and if anyone has a phone in good condition other than battery issues why not take advantage of it.

The program covers iPhone SE's through X's.

They’re shipping both UPS and FedEx. Ours are on a FedEx truck that is in town but the tracking doesn’t specify I need to sign for them. It’s just annoying because I have work I could be doing and I know as soon as I run out, they’ll show up and I won’t be home.

I’ve still got six months on my lease and I don’t have Apple care. I quite literally can’t keep this phone, it’s shitting the bed, I’m kinda stuck (beyond my desire for the new one). I already dropped $79 to get screen replaced just so I can trade it in.

No, for some reason our work plan with Verizon allows discounted upgrades after 18 months. I'm not sure if my employer pays the rest of it monthly or what. But I give them $200 (plus tax on the $900) and I own the phone. We have 3000+ people on the plan so there may be some perks?

It's here and it's glorious. I didn't appreciate the display size difference until seeing it in person.
You got an Xs, right? (Not Xs Max) I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger, since I have a 6s and it has battery issues too.

Yes the Xs. I didn’t want that much bigger footprint to go to the Max. This is slightly* bigger but removing the bezels, I didn’t think it would make so much difference.

Wow, just an F- on the new Control Center. It was one of the few things that made sense for one-handed use. Swipe up. Whose idea was it to swipe down from the top right? How is that ever a natural, easy motion? Is that the case with the X as well?

Yes. It takes a little to get used to. But it’s natural for me now.

UPS lost my package, lol. It is no longer in the system after it was cleared by customers this morning - was set to be picked up at the local customer center today.

UPS told me to cancel the order through Apple.

Yeah, saving grace is the camera and flashlight being on the lock screen. I'll probably get used to it, but I don't really get forcing two-hand use to use a screen originally designed to be easy-access. Oh well.

Currently sitting unable to converse on Whatsapp or leave my house because you can't tell your phone to hold off on restoring 50,000 pics, 50,000 of which I don't need to access today. Or is there a way around that?

Because there’s no home button on current models and swipe up needs to be “home.” It does take some getting used to, but it’s actually much more logical to be where it is now. If you asked someone completely new to iPhones where the battery, cell, and WiFi settings would be with a swipe it’d be from where those things are displayed.

One of the nicer subtle things in control center is force touching on several of the buttons (like flashlight, timer) brings up a mini app.

For the photos you could turn off iCloud syncing to photos in settings.

I’ve been playing with it since it came and it’s been a quick transition to the new motions. I don’t like having lost battery % from home screen and have to drill down on some other stuff, but so far so good. Can’t get my texts to move over tho, which is kinda a pain in the ass.

I did, maybe I just didn’t give it enough time? I had to run out for work. I’ll try to restore again later tonight when I have a chance, I did an iCloud backup when it got here on old phone, but it was just blank, then about five strings loaded but all were at least a year old.

Yeah it’s shocking going from the buttoned phones to none but the learning curve is a bit less steep than it felt it would be at first. In a month I’ll probably have forgotten my initial gripes.

Face ID is pretty damn fast.

Minor aside, but typing that made me remember just how awful autocorrect has gotten. Even typing i and d with a shift before each won’t let you type the initialism for identification. It’s been pretty brutal since iOS 11 to the point where I’ve mostly had to shut it off and lose emoji shortcuts as a result. Why has it gotten so terrible? Anyone else have this issue?

Just like mt8, if you want texts to sync first, turn all the other iCloud sync off until they do, then selectively enable sync for other content. Photos are generally a massive amount of bytes for initial sync. Over time they use more of a diffing algorithm, but the first one is a doozy.

You’ll forget about all of the old paradigms in a week. I was VERY skeptical of faceid too, but it is surprisingly fast. I don’t miss touchid one iota.

The autocorrect thing, yes. It’s really aggressive and seemingly wrong more often. No idea why.

I've not really played around with the Max that much, but first impressions, extremely fast compared to my 6 Plus. I will say I was underwhelmed by the size of the screen, not that it's been a secret. I don't know why, I was expecting bigger. My major gripe right now is that even though I did a back up and everything flowed through, the hands free blue tooth between "my state of the art car" and "state of the art" phone will recognize my phone but won't connect. Fuck knows why.. but I guess I have this weekend to figure it out. Also, as PP mentioned, where is the option for % of battery life? Hand motion gestures make sense, but I have to get used to force closing apps with this set up.

So, do I want the s or s max?
It’s a Personal preference.

I have giant hands (thanks to taking HGH as a kid) so the size of the phone isn’t an issue for me.

Go to Best Buy or the Apple store and try them out before you buy.

Isn't battery % a toggle at the top of "battery" in settings?
Negative. Not anymore. Not sure if it was on X but it appears on 12.0 it’s gone. The home screen is different in a few ways. With the cutout, what I’ve read is there’s no room for the % anymore. Dunno how legit that is, but google tells me it so it must be correct.

Battery is still there. When you toggle control center it’s in the top right.
