True but you're pinning everything on this game.  It smacks of Mauch shortening his rotation in 64.  If you're the team in the lead, one of the ways to blow a big lead is to go into crisis mode while you are still in front.  

To be fair, Vargas turns into a truly awful pitcher as he gets deeper into games. Cameron has the numbers in the link article. Maybe you don't use Shields but letting Vargas go through a 3rd turn is a mistake.
