I missed a lot of last night’s game. Did Verdugo do something in last night’s game or is this off the field stuff?

Not being able to tell what Feebles is doing is a bad sign for a third base coach. Either wave your arms or put up a stop sign and tell him to be halfway. Clown show all around.

4. Bloom sitting on his hands when marginal upgrades might have won 2 of the 3 games we've lost since the deadline is also absolutely infuriating.
Bloom sitting on his hands and not trading away valuable pieces from a team that was clearly not a legit contender is even more infuriating IMO.

It's hard to tell, but it looks like Febles (thinking it was a Wallball) was directing Urias at 2b and not concerned with McGuire.

You're misrepresenting what actually happened at the deadline. The Orioles got Jack Flaherty for two guys that neither the Red Sox nor the Orioles would protect in the offseason -- they're barely prospects. Lorenzen went to Philadelphia for the equivalent of a Bonaci/Paulino type. Devin Mann, who's awfully similar to Ryan Fitzgerald, was the centerpiece in the deal that got Ryan Yarbrough. If what you were representing was true, I completely agree, but it simply isn't the case.

He was doing this little twirly thing that looked to signal “come on, keep going” to me. It’d be a weird signal if it was meant to be “turn around.” Then once McGuire passes 3B, the ball lands in Keirmeir’s glove, and he points to second and yells for him to go back. Then kinda gives up on defeat.

There’s no chance Febles knew that ball was staying in play.
Kind of like Zimmer saying no no no, while Denny Doyle thought Zimmer said go go go. You got to love this game. Hopefully this is the game the Red Sox wake up. Hey Reggie Jackson and Billy Martin got into it at Fenway Park and then they went on to win the World Series that year. It is very frustrating though with this Red Sox team. Their record should be better, but defense and bad running skills on the basepaths has killed them.

So you think Paxton was on this level of value? Kind of disagree but fair enough take.

Rare bad take from redsoxstats. Runners responsibility to see whether the ball is caught or not and then act accordingly. Also his job to know the numbers of outs. Not impossible that McGuire thought there were 2 outs, but only he knows if that was the case.

Paxton had significantly more value than those players -- but the Red Sox best position [and easiest] with Paxton was to hold and offer a qualifying offer. If he accepts, we get him back on a reasonable low-risk commitment; if he declines, which is probably unlikely, we'll get draft pick compensation that is probably better than anything we'd have gotten in return for a rental.

Yeah doesn’t look anything like a wave in to me. He’s gesturing to go back imo.

I guess it would be excusable if it scraped the top of the wall and they both thought it was a home run. but he caught the fucking ball without even leaping.
And who gets fired for not wearing the banana unis in this critical series??

Cora on Verdugo: “We have to be available. From coaches to players to analysts to the front office, everybody has to be available every single day here. That’s the bottom line and today one guy wasn’t available.” "Available" seems to man being engaged and ready to play.

Whether one agrees or not with the non moves by Bloom to help this years team, it really seems as if they have resulted in a very down and non engaged clubhouse. Hard to tell if the wheels will totally fall off based on this but today makes me think that may be what occurs. The whole Verdugo thing, complete lack of focus, and managerial moves as well as the Cora media availability just give me that feeling.

It’s funny how the baseball gods work. Wong got just under that, he hits it at 28 degree launch angle instead of 38 and we win and even with Dugie’s shit the team would have a lot of life at the moment.

Now they feel dead as hell and everything sucks.1-6 since last Friday.

Verdugo needs to “man up” and explain his situation.

McGuire needs to “man up” and explain his situation.

Cora needs to go “Domingo German” in the clubhouse and start tipping over a sofa or two, maybe smash a tv screen.

I know this has become almost a punch line to say at this point, but they really are getting guys back in the next week. Story, Sale, Houck could give the team a huge lift.

problem is, I think it’s unrealistic to assume guys will be highly productive immediately upon their return

It's the same thing as last year; the team is on the edge of contention, Bloom doesn't sell but also doesn't do shit to markedly improve the team at the deadline, then they go on a downward spiral. And if you want to look back to '21, the team was in contention for the best record in baseball at the deadline, and all Bloom did to help that team out was to pick up an injured outfielder hoping he could learn to play first base at the major league level. That team went from a double-digit lead for a wild card spot to damn near missing the playoffs entirely.

Wouldn't you call that a team with an overly weak and fragile mental state? You're obfuscating away the responsibility of the manager to continue to do his job and not sulk away the post deadline week or two.

I was thinking this too. If players are so mentally fragile that not getting a marginal rotation upgrade or middle infielder at the deadline causes them to disengage in the middle of the playoff race, then fuck them. They weren’t winning shit anyway with that type of weak unprofessional mental state.

This feels to me like a buying opportunity that might lead to better things for this team. A confluence of so much negativity coming to a head when they are treading water with the other teams with similar records but have Story, Sale, Whitlock and Houck coming back, today has the potential to be a rock bottom wake up moment. Possibly anyway!

Not moving Verdugo at the deadline looks absolutely braindead with the benefit of like 4 days worth of hindsight? Not helping the team at all now and will be 100% gone when that contract ends after next year.
