Glad I didn't catch a game while I was nearby this week. Tough matchup against the guy I wish we acquired.
Why? NY's rotation is fine, and Cole hasn't pitched at all yet. So you would have given up, what, Spencer Jones, for a year of Burnes?

Verdugo not back yet, not ideal timing but more important things than baseball, I guess. It is nice to get Judge some games in LF at least:

Anthony Volpe (R) SS
Juan Soto (L) RF
Aaron Judge (R) LF
Giancarlo Stanton (R) DH
Anthony Rizzo (L) 1B
Gleyber Torres (R) 2B
Trent Grisham (L) CF
Jose Trevino (R) C
Oswaldo Cabrera (S) 3B

Because Burnes is awesome. I wouldn't have wanted to pay the price but I do hate that the Orioles are so damn good and so able to acquire anyone they want at this point.

Holmes in trying for the five out save, NY needs this game.

Holmes strikes out Henderson and Rutschman on 7 pitches to strand 2 and keep it at 2-0 after 8, very impressive.

NY has team control of Gil through 2028, hopefully he can stay healthy.

Very impressive by Holmes, not Mason Miller but not far behind.

Much needed win.

I'm genuinely not giving you a hard time here, but I want to use this comment to make a point:

There is a utility cost with adding a new SP, it bumps someone out of the rotation. Sometimes that doesn't matter, but in the 2021-22 offseason, NY pursued Justin Verlander, He ended up going back to HOU, but if NY had managed to sign him, Nestor would have been bumped from the rotation. Instead he kept his spot, continued his All-Star form from late 2021, made the actual All-Star Game, and won two games in the ALDS, the second on three days rest.

So even leaving aside the prospects NY would have had to give up for one year of Burnes (probably Spencer Jones+), who would he have bumped from the rotation if NY had gotten him (and Cole was out)? That's right, Luis Gil.

I'm glad Boone showed a sense of urgency and went to Holmes for five outs even though it is early in the season.

Just-enough offense isn't pretty but the starting pitching sure is. Great job by Gil.
