Feeling a little better about Whitlock's velocity compared to his last start, most of his sinkers that inning were coming in at 95 and Savant has him topping at just under 97 so far. I was more worried about that than him dialing in his command eventually. I think he'll get there.
Huh. I think he stinks, doesn't seem to have confidence in his pitches, walking .182 hitters, etc. I hope he rights himself, but he hasn't yet.

One oddly distinct SoSH memory I have from the ‘13 post season was related to that goofy interview a bunch of players did with like ESPN or MLB Network. They were all milling around outside of the dugout without shirts on, and they were so fucking loose, just joking around and pointing to someone sunbathing(?) in centerfield.

Anyways, someone here commented about how, as the interview was wrapping up, one of the players dropped some serious insight, and another poster responded with something like, “of course he did. These guys are students of the game.”

That always stuck with me. Would love to find that video/post.
This is also the team where guys went to a game on their day off.

I clearly remember an interview some member of the Sox did with Kevin Millar/Chris Rose on Intentional Talk with Mike Napoli sunbathing on the field behind them.

That was it!

The whole interview was impeccably improvised. There were, like, sight gags where Peavy or whoever would just wander into the shot with props.

Verdugo has smoked two balls right up the middle today. I am really excited for his season.

And now he's stealing bases!!!

I know it’s early and blah blah but this is a game thread and I’m curious, what do we think a new contract for Verdugo looks like if he hits like this all year?

Also, Justin Turner!

No he hasn't, like I said he certainly needs to dial in the command. But I was more worried about a drastic velocity dip lingering, that's a lot harder for a pitcher to survive. He didn't have the benefit of a full offseason + spring training and I think he might need 5+ starts to settle in before we can evaluate.

There are a lot of good pitchers who have had a rough start to the year. Right now I've got the Jays vs. Rays game on too and both Manoah and McClanahan are struggling. McClanahan actually has a 13% walk rate to start the year.

I mean, it was his knee. Who's to say whether he should hold a grudge about it or not? This is such a weird take to me.
What bothered me was him speaking out on us throwing at Machado and, as a result, functionally throwing Barnes and Farrell under the bus. Unless he asked them to drop it beforehand, I don’t know, I think he should’ve handled that in house.

Whadayamean, this is a kickass lineup. Add pitchers Lester, Lackey, Koji etc. Go up against anybody.

Ellsbury, CF
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Napoli, 1B
Gomes, LF
Victorino, RF
Bogaerts, 3B
Drew, SS
Ross, C
Don't get me wrong, collectively they were kick ass and had a special bond. Take that lineup from Napoli down and replace Bogaerts ( just 18 games) with the team's primary 3B Middlebrooks. Also to be fair give Salty the nod over Ross and there is nothing awe inspiring about this guys as players. I think that's part of what makes this team so great.

Verdugo's going to be a really interesting situation, and they just mentioned why in the booth. If they think his defense will play in right, then he'll be worth trying to resign.

Salty gave us the best year of his career fueled by like a .370 BABIP. I’m not shy about admitting I was ready to give him 4/60 after that season and that’s why it’s a good thing I’m not running the team.

I'm happy to see Whitlock improving as the game's gone on. I was probably so critical of him, b/c I loved him out of the pen, and his last start and the beginning of this one didn't seem auspicious for his role as a starter.

I’m watching on the mlb tv app, and get the same Amazon prime ad every single time. I’m so sick of that dumb song
