Today the 2013 Red Sox will be honored before the game for the tenth anniversary of their championship run which helped lift the city after one of its darkest moments. They were an unlikely champion, a team cobbled together coming off a terrible year. (Sound familiar? We can only hope.) One thing burned into my mind from that year was looking over the schedule in late August when the Rays had closed to within a game and fearing that, with our respective remaining schedules, they were going to pass us and wrest away the division. But despite the Sox having the tougher remaining schedule and the Rays heading into a relatively soft stretch, the Sox pulled away and wound up not only taking the AL East but also tying the eventual NL champion Cardinals for the best record in baseball. Which led to my belief that how easy or tough a section of any team's schedule is has less to do with who they're playing but rather how they're playing.

It's a 1:35 start--Detmers versus Whitlock. Let's keep this party going!

It isn’t what you hoped for…. Is it?

Edit- adding that I still don’t expect much today from Whitlock but something like 5 innings and 2 runs while keeping the BB’s to a minimum would be a good step.

Boston
ST event was a Q&A with Gomes, Victorino and Peavy yesterday. Someone asked about key moments in the WS, and they pointed to game 4. Buchholz couldn’t pitch above 85 mph, so they started Ross to guide him through. Victorino simply couldn’t move and leveled with Farrell a few hours before the game. They needed to bring in Lackey in the 8th (Peavy: “the fans did not like Lackey, but we couldn’t have won without him”). Good show. ECA1D6DF-E644-433A-9332-2D9FAE50B013.jpeg

Lackey, like Price 5 years later, would be a playoff hero despite them both being massively easily hateful. What is it about Sox WS pitching heroes being turds? Schilling, Beckett, Lackey, Price…… Al were partners with much more likeable guys though- Pedro, Lester/Buccholz, those two again and KOJI!!!!, Eovaldi, Kelly….

I've really enjoyed Peavy's stints on the MLB Network. Insightful, enthusiastic and energetic while not being annoying.

Game 16
A tough first inning for Nick Pivetta,
but the Sox bounced back and things got betta.
We got big hits from expected faces
and input from unusual places.
The pen (and Ort!) hung tight. Tilt got the win.
Refsnyder and Wong and Chang all chipped in.
And we’d be remiss not sharing the love
for the offensive stud: Matt Thaiss’s glove.
Give us free bases and we’re kinda great.
A win today and this team’s 8 and 8!

Wow, second big league game (drafted less than a year ago) and Nevin's got the kid hitting lead off.

An instant classic. The "love -- glove" rhyme killed it.

Might see more hittable pitches ahead of Trout-Ohtani?
I suppose, but it also seems like a lot of pressure for a kid with just 44 (7 A+ and 37 AA) minor league games under his belt. Just took a quick look at his B Ref and discovered that in 2021 he played 16 games for Brewster in the Cape League and 1 game in the NECL for my hometown North Adams Steeple Cats going 1-3 with a walk and 2 RBI.

nice yoshi is back in.

maybe his hammy fixed will allow him to hit it higher than directly into the ground.

In honor of the 2013 team, here's some photoshops from that post season run...

Lester KO's the Cards

I don't remember why this was made, maybe because they were all misfits? Can't remember the context here.

The Defensive Wizard

Oh I had one more - it was Lackey turning away from temptations to help the team. The ultimate sacrifice.

Awesome, mlb.tv is broadcasting the pregame show on NESN. Looking forward to seeing the 2013 festivities... easily one of my favorite sports seasons ever,
