Sticking the Lions in the opener might’ve been a stretch. They’re talented, and had a nice finish to 2022 with no pressure on them, but there’s a lot of hype around them relative to what they’ve actually done.

Would’ve LOVED a Chargers-Chiefs opener.

Do they have a policy or practice of not scheduling divisional games for the Thursday opener? Because while I’m looking forward to seeing how the Lions stack up, both the Chargers and Broncos would seem to present better storylines for the casual fan, while still not burning a marquee matchup like the Bills or Bengals (which the league definitely tries not to do for Week 1 TNF).

The have great marketable skill position players in Ra Brown and Swift but yeah it’s a stretch

I would have picked Bears or Eagles

They don't usually put divisional games in this opener. They had Packers/Bears in 2019 which was an anniversary year but the last divisional Thursday opener before that was Giants/Cowboys in 2012. They used to have some sort of playoff re-match but they stopped that as well. IIRC, the Panthers made a stink about having to open up in Denver after losing to them in the Super Bowl.

I think they learned that they're going to do massive numbers for the opener regardless, save the marquee matchups for later in the season.

The Lions are the consensus preseason favorite to win the NFC North. The Bears had the #1 pick in the draft. Pretty sure the league picked the better matchup between those two. (Eagles would’ve been better, but as others have said, they don’t schedule marquee matchups on Week 1 TNF anymore.)

Kelce is out. He hasn't missed a game due to injury since 2014. (he missed one in 21 with Covid)

And now he's missing the first game of the season. Tough one for KC.

Especially with an already very thin receiving corp for KC. Should be fun to see how Mahomes handles it. Makes tonight a good but closer.

I think they aim for a marquee team/player (Mahomes, Rodgers, etc.) and that team/player goes off and they get to showcase it or a game breaks out and they get lucky. But it makes sense not to burn a showcase match-up this early.

Man, I hate Cris Collinsworth's kid. And Tony Dungy.

edit: ugh, and Jason Garrett with Chris Simms. This crew sucks.

Dan Campbell is Tony Robbins. Great motivational speakers, but neither one should be coaching.
This is a silly comment, untethered to reason.

Detroit has been in the desert for a pretty long time and now they have the 4th highest chance to win the entire NFC heading into the season.

As a resident of Detroit (fml) lions fans are way overconfident. I spoke to two of their supporters. One was expecting a blowout in favor of the lions. The other was more realistic saying the lions should win. I mean it’s the lions… you’d think they know better by now. I can believe I’m saying this but I actually wouldn’t mind seeing Detroit get absolutely blown off the field. The sense of entitlement and over confidence has been something. I know they’ve improved but cmon man. We talking about the lions here.
