If/When he gets into a game, Murphy will be the 22nd pitcher for the Red Sox this season ... 23 if you count the inning thrown by Pablo Reyes

I mean, they have Kluber and Pivetta sitting there. I get that they need an extra arm for Wednesday, but just pick one of the vets for Thursday and plan accordingly. Why drag it out?

I think to some extent they're going to just be seeing who's ready/who they think will give them the least disastrous innings.

Piggybacking Kluber/Murphy in some order probably makes a decent amount of sense.

Sometimes it depends on who they have to use the game/s before, but also, why not make the opponent prepare for multiple possibilities? NY needs a guy on Wednesday and has not announced yet if it is Brito or Vasquez, both in AAA and would be on full rest.

They may as well take a look at another one of their 40 man guys. Especially one who until this season showed some upside and is/was an actual prospect. I'm surprised it's as a starter though.

Him, Walter and Mata have really shit the bed unfortunately. I hoped at least one of them would be a useful long guy by now.

They haven't said one way or the other.

Thanks for posting those tweets, JM3. Pretty funny that Senator (CT) Chris Murphy posted that. I read somewhere that they "know" each other thanks to twitter. CT people, without wading into politics, is the senator a good guy or a tool?

I like him. His signature issue is gun control, which became a high priority for him after Sandy Hook.

With his elite chase rate, couldn't he make a good closer if the Sox deal Jansen? Wouldn't be the first starter to make that transition
I would think Martin is the best closer option regardless of what they do with Jansen, but closer usage is so wtf to me in this era of baseball.

Like you want your best reliever pitching to the heart of the order the last time they bat in the game, whether that's the 8th or the 9th & you should have your guys geared up & prepared for certain hitters, not certain innings. & Martin is their best reliever so you want him in your highest leverage spots at the moment. Which is why paying an old school closer a bunch of $ to only pitch the 9th inning about 65 innings per year, especially when his stuff is declining, is pretty crazy.

Crawford's chase rate is interesting, but he doesn't have elite stuff or an elite strikeout rate (8.82 k/9) so his best usage is almost certainly as a starter or a bulk reliever, especially since he doesn't have a dramatic drop off the 2nd time through the order.

If at some point Crawford is one of their 5 best starters & Houck isn't, Houck is a guy more suited to an inning or two of high leverage relief because he's got better stuff & has a big drop off on successive trips through the order still.

Paxton and Bello have both been very good, though I'd like to see Bello go deeper into games. Sale, obviously, was pitching great until he got hurt and now we all just wait to see if/when he will return. But healthy (hahahahahaha), those three make a terrific core of a starting rotation, that could be tough in the playoffs (PLAYOFFS!?!?). But with Sale hurt and Bello not going deep into games and Houck not doing great, it's a real struggle for the rotation right now.

Bello has been making good progress. His BB rate in the minors was not great so the improvement on that front, while maintaining a decent K rate and overall effectiveness, has been encouraging. I think he is a year away from being a playoff-impact caliber starter, however.
I have been pleasantly surprised by Paxton, and will be even more surprised if he makes it through the rest of the season without injury.

I think many people said the key to this season if we're hoping for a surprise playoff run was that Sale/Paxton/Bello excel and pitch 150+ innings a piece....or if one of them doesn't, a guy like Whitlock picks up the slack.

For a brief time, we had those 3 pitching well prior to Sale's injury and it was fun to watch. I'm still semi-hopeful for Houck or Whitlock. If Sale is only out a couple weeks or so, then there is still the chance this rotation could be decent in the 2nd half. But you are counting on a lot of things going right. I still think that they would need to make a trade for some type of #4/#5 innings-eater (what they hoped Pivatta or Kluber would be) if they are in contention still by late July. Gonna need to string a few series wins together in the meantime.

Like there aren't a dozen other guys in the locker room who wouldn't say the exact same thing. It's good that most of them are smart enough not to advertise it.

Maybe. I don't know. It really doesn't matter because we're not talking about a "dozen other guys in the locker room". We're talking about this particular homophobe who showed his ass in public and I think it's more than okay not to support him. But you do you, I guess.

I'm just not sure how the Sox can square trumpeting a Pride Day all over social media and having this replacement level shithead on the roster.

From the masslive article: “I understand the optics here,” said Bloom. “The important thing is knowing that Matt knows that he made a mistake."

Does anyone think that the person making that tweet citing those biblical references has changed his mind? I suspect that all he learned is that he needs to be a bit more careful when expressing himself.
He went to the one-day minor league seminar, so I think that the problem is totally and completely solved.

F Dermody, F Bloom and F the Sox. Those comments from Bloom are ignorant and infuriating. A couple minutes reviewing Dermody's social media shows he doesn't believe it was a mistake. Bloom must think fans are morons.
If the Sox want to endorse and support that crap then screw them. Won't be watching tonight or few a few weeks at least. Already dumped my tickets for next weekend.

Why is this guy being called up to begin with, for what will likely be a three inning start? Go with Kluber or Pivetta instead. Is it because they can’t call up Ort (presumably to replace whoever is being sent down to make way for Dermody) because he hasn’t been down long enough?

I expect the plan was to start him then DFA him and replace him with someone else on the 40 man roster as they thought he was fungible.

Maybe just cut out the middle step and DFA him now and let Kluber start against his former team. It’s never too late to do the right thing!

Also I think it’s this dude’s first major league start.

Really bad unforced error by the club and it’s not even for a guy who is much help to the rotation.
