Reiss speculating he couldn't pass a physical and his contract was structured accordingly due to concerns (James Robinson, that is).

From Howe's article on The Athletic
"Or will the Patriots reel in DeAndre Hopkins? The free agent is planning to visit Gillette Stadium on Thursday, and there’s optimism the two sides can find a way to reach an agreement, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.

That’s not to say there aren’t hurdles. First, it remains unclear how much it would cost to sign Hopkins, though the Patriots do have the resources with about $14.2 million in cap space, according to the NFLPA. Second, can the Patriots and Hopkins find a mutual understanding regarding his practice schedule, which has waned in recent years? There is no denying Hopkins can still be one of the most dominant receivers in the league when he’s on the field, but the two sides have to decide whether they’re a good match for one another. And it sounds like there’s some motivation to find that common ground."

Bring the body language doctors in: What does it mean that Hopkins is leaning away from Judon? Lack of deodorant? Still mulling his future? Not a fan of having his personal space invaded?
Its DeAndre twitter account and the post says "La Familia", so I don't think body language is the necessary indicator.

Goddammit, bring me Hopkins. If you want to see if Mac is the QB of the future, give him the talent NOW to figure it out.

Yep. I don’t think Hopkins is prime Hopkins but the dude is still really good. He would represent a significant upgrade in the receiving corps.

Why did they not make the push when he was still in the building?
Seems like they could have easily tricked him into signing. They could have, for example, prepared a contract and thrust its last page in front of him as he was leaving the building and said, "Everyone must sign out before they leave". He, not paying much attention, would then sign and they would then stick the signed last page to the rest of the contract and say, "It's official -- Welcome to NE!"

Honestly, I'm mentally prepared for the Chiefs or Bills or Dolphins to find some whack way to find money and screw us. I felt like the only way to ensure that didn't happen was to lock him up today.

I feel like Hopkins doesn't want to commit to off-season activities and will probably wait until training camp has started to sign somewhere.
Tomorrow is the last day, right? Also, couldn't Bill just say sign today, see you day 1 or whatever in camp?

I don’t know who CJ Golson is and I don’t know how to post a tweet but he has been reporting essentially done deal 2/27 all day. Nobody seems to be reporting it, so my guess is not legitimate. If anyone sees the tweet and feels he may be legit, then that is another story.

It's amazing, isn't it? The number of times we think a player like this is coming to one of the local teams, only to be disappointed in the end?
I usually am pessimistic about this kind of stuff but I’ve had a gut feeling it happens for several days now. But I’m sure my Charlie Brown football moment is coming.

This gets done and Goodell will go on a Dark Retreat until he figures out a way to take more draft picks from us.

Albert Breer on 98.5 said he heard Hopkins was communicating with Tennessee while on his Patriots visit. So I wouldn’t think this is a lock for the Patriots. He thinks if he doesn’t sign today w the Pats that it’s more likely he opens this all up again to other teams.

Pretty much all speculation at this point but I'm guessing that the Pats and Titans offered him solid deals. If he doesn't sign with either soon, he might be waiting for a better team to free up cap space. He probably knows that one or both teams will still be there later in the summer, if needed.

I think Hopkins' market isn't all that great and the true contenders likely aren't eager to throw money his way (though who knows how Diggs' recent antics change the equation for Buffalo). The Pats and Titans are in reasonably similar positions, though NE has higher odds of trending up, in my view. Let's see what happens, but if he's after money I think the Patriots are in prime position to come out on top here.

The structure for a deal would be pretty easy, right? Signing bonus, guaranteed, with vet minimum and incentives? With Hopkins missing time last year, the incentives would be NLTBE and the bill for those incentives wouldn't hit until next year. You can have pretty low thresholds for incentives for receptions, yards, and TDs along with snaps/games played.

I think that's the contract he'd sign in KC, not with the Patriots. My guess is people are going to be surprised at the totals, he likely won't come cheap even if there aren't many teams in the fold.

I could also see a Revis-revisited deal.

OBJ's contract with the Ravens looked like this, per PFT:

Signing bonus of $13.835 million, and a guaranteed base salary of $1.165 million. The deal includes four voidable years, which reduces the 2023 cap number from $15 million to $3.932 million.

Per a source with knowledge of the terms, Beckham can earn an extra $1 million based on three categories: receptions, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns.

The bonuses are:

  • For receptions: (1) $250,000 for 30 catches; (2) $500,000 for 40 catches; (3) $750,000 for 50 catches; or (4) $1 million for 60 catches, or if he leads the team in receptions.
  • For receiving yardage, it’s this: (1) $250,000 for 250 yards; (2) $500,000 for 500 yards; (3) $750,000 for 750 yards; or (4) $1 million for 1,000 yards, or if he leads the team in receiving yards.
  • For receiving touchdowns, it’s this: (1) $250,000 for three; (2) $500,000 for five; (3) $750,000 for seven; or (4) $1 million for nine, or if he leads the team in receiving touchdowns.

Another option as well if they want to spread that signing bonus with void years.

Wrap him up and put a bow on him. BB started his negotiations long ago.
