If Turnbull is (or gets) healthy, $2M+$2M is a great flyer for the Phillies. They don't need him if everyone stays healthy and performs, but it's a cheap insurance policy to stash in the pen until that's no longer the case.

Maybe that takes PHI out on Snell/Montgomery? Boras has to be getting worried.

If having Turnbull could save them more than $2m in negotiations for either that would be a funny play.

They have Jackson Merrill waiting in the wings to take over, he probably debuts some time this summer. I have no idea if he’s a legit defensive shortstop, though.
He's not Carson Williams, but he's a good defensive prospect and should stick at short for at least the start of his career. Possible he could fill out and have to move down the spectrum, but I wouldn't be worried about that for a few years yet.

The Story we had during his Bogaerts overlap couldn't really make throws from SS though, kind of important part of the job.

I don’t know what the solution is but MLB/MLBPA should come up with something to end the DFA shuffle. I get why the teams do it to try to sneak the player through but it just seems incredibly unfair to the player, particularly when it happens in season. Maybe a rule where if you claim a guy you need to keep him for 30 days or he can become a free agent if you try to drop him before the 30 days?

I'm not sure this is something that needs to be fixed. The players that are shuffled like this are almost always fringe players that if they weren't bouncing around the waiver wire would probably be enduring the same thing as free agents or they might be unemployed entirely. It's just the way of life for players that peak at a AAAA level.

I'm betting all those DFAs for Castillo this winter didn't really impact him in a significant way. It's not like he had to move to New York or Philadelphia or Baltimore when he was claimed by them. He just continued to do whatever he was doing to prepare for the upcoming season where ever he already was. Maybe he had to adjust spring training travel/lodging plans but my guess is that a player in his position probably isn't booking flights or hotels/AirBNBs in December or January. He's doing it at the last moment. The 39th and 40th players on every roster probably anticipate getting waived or traded any day and operate accordingly. They don't set down roots anywhere during the season. They rent month to month if not week to week. Being a minor leaguer in general probably isn't that much different. Only in most of those cases, they happily anticipate being moved up a level and having to change homes as a result.

This feels like a "they signed up for this" kind of thing to me.

His tax return next year is going to be a mess
