The Flyers need to win in regulation, they can't let the Caps get a point. Detroit and Pittsburgh are both still alive if Washington only gets 1 point.

This leaves us to the potential scenario where the Flyers/Caps are tied late in the 3rd and the Flyers have to pull the goalie which potentially also ruins Detroit and Pittsburgh's chances.
1-1 heading to the 3rd…

The Caps and their negative goal differential seem like a cupcake first round for the Rags, but stranger things have happened.

Pulling the goalies with 3+ minutes left never made sense to me anyway.
The longer you have the advantage the more likely you are to score. And he had no choice. Not sure if he knew his season was dead or not, it all happened very quickly.

Washington and their -37 goal differential is playoff bound on the backs of an ENG in a 1-1 game.

I would love to see the analytics on this. Sure, when your'e down 2 goals, you gotta pull the goalie pretty early. But there was plenty of time for things to happen 5-on-5. And in this case Philly didn't even control the puck when the goalie came out. So it's totally predictable for the ENG to come 10-15 seconds later. It really made no sense -- never mind that it's a tie game.

I mean, I'll take it, but Detroit and Pittsburgh must be pissed that Philly just handed the second point to WAS.
You really can't complain if you're hanging your playoff hopes on a team with -26 goal differential winning in regulation. Red Wings lost to the Caps last week, and given that Pens choked away a playoff spot to the Cats last year,, it's rather fitting that the Bruins essentially eliminated them on Saturday.

The analytics say to pull the goalie early. But that’s not really applicable here.

The Flyers only chance to make the playoffs was to win in regulation. They were in complete desperation mode and couldn’t sit around and wait until a minute left. Kinda have to push the envelope.

Panthers with the ENG. Battle of Florida and the next chapter of Leafs-Bruins incoming.

Matthews stuck on 69 goals. Nice?

Not that it matters, but the first Phi-Was game doesn't apply in the H2H tiebreaker because the teams only play an odd number of games. So they'd have to go the sixth tiebreakeer, which Philly would win anyway.
I don’t understand. If the Penguins win in regulation, don’t they tie on points and win on Regulation Wins?

As awesome as this end of season final Wild Card day or two is, I hope the NHL does NOT replicate the NBA and do a play in system to allow 9 and 10 seeds to get a chance.

The mucky muck
As a Wings fan, I’m pretty bummed with the outcome last night and they showed a lot of resilience this past week. But the wild card was lost when they dropped 8 of 9 in March and blew a pretty substantial lead in the WC race.

Yzerman has some decisions to make, including how much he’s willing to pay Seider and Raymond (which should be his priorities), what to do about the goaltending, and if he should bring back useful vets (Kane, Perron.)

Should be interesting and I’m expecting playoffs or bust next year. They have the talent.

Kucherov notches his 100th assist in a season, joining Connor McDavid this season. McDavid became the 4th ever to do it, & Kucherov 5th.

Only Gretzky (11x), Bobby Orr, & Mario Lemieux had ever done it prior.
