Works for me as a top 7, that's enough for a title. Pray for health.

Joe with a year of experience plus a better group of assistants that don't have 1 foot out the door.

Lots of reason for optimism.

Media day is in less than a week, they play their first preseason game in 12 days, and my hype level is getting damn high. Feels good to make this thread.

I bet the gremlins in Boston media will come out bashing Brad for admitting what we all figured to be true about Malcolm, but I for one love his honesty. I'd also bet the players do too. God forbid he has the audacity to think about the players feelings, while at the same time trading the "heart and soul" of the team. I think there's a reason he was still invited/at Smart's wedding after the trade. Dude treats the players like people, but will also do what's necessary for the team

Brad improved the ceiling while keeping the floor about the same. If we can get 65-70 games in the RS out of Zinger and Timelord with reasonable health elsewhere I can't see how they're not the 1 seed, barring a leap from Cleveland.

Brad seems like a straight shooter, which may not have served him well as an NBA level coach but was a great skill set to have as a coach of young men in college and now as a GM. I bet Brad broke it to Smart that they could come close in terms of money, but that leaving is actually better for Marcus in the long term because his role is going to diminish a bit in Boston with one more mouth to feed (Porzingis) along with the rise of D White. And he's probably telling Malcolm the truth as well, that if the Cs are looking to improve the team he is the most attractive asset that the team would be willing to give up. But that he won't be dealt unless it is a good haul coming back.

The final Celtics game of '22-'23 was on May 29th- just over 17 weeks ago. That means Joe Mazzulla has watched The Town approximately 68 times since the season concluded.

I know this is the 23-24 thread, but this clip from Old Man and the 3 yesterday is, I think, really relevant in understanding the player perception of Brad. This may be outdated since he moved upstairs, but it speaks to Brad's character and how he operates with players. Suffice to say, I think any anger Malcom has towards the Celtics is making a mountain of a mole hill - the dude is a professional, and this is a business.

Relevant excerpt at 3:35

Edit: All this being said, I still think there's a possibility Brogdon is dealt.

May need to do more than pray w KP, MB and RWIII in that Top-7. Horford isn't a spring chicken either. We were relatively unscathed last season and entered the playoffs at full strength. It may be a tough ask to repeat this but we do have some depth options so hopefully some can step up to fit in.

Brian Barrett did a breakdown on his Mass Pike podcast on The Ringer... but I really like the way they have designed their wing depth this year. In Hauser and Mykhailiuk they've got spot up shooters with size. In Stevens and Brissett they've got more versatile defenders than they had last year. If either of them shoots 33-35% on spot up three's it's gravy. They have two interesting wild cards in Banton and Walsh... if they get anything useful out of those two its more gravy! Overall, they just have more depth and 'minutes eaters' at the wing that can alleviate the pressure and stress on the Jays over the course of the regular season.

What are the chances that step one of Brogdon appeasement is a starting role?

I believe that the Celts are better off with Brogdon staying in his role as 6th man, but maybe he wants to start?
Near zero.

They're going to have to start two bigs to get KP/Al/Rob their minutes, and since 3 of their best 7 players are bigs.

Malcolm isn't starting over White.

If the season started tomorrow, what does everyone think the order of the bench is?

6th man is obviously Horford
7th/8th is PP/Hauser

Who would be 9th and 10th?
IMO, I think it's
Lamar Stevens 9
Korndog 10
Brissett/Svi 11 and 12.

Actually looking at it, I don't think the Celtics depth is that bad. Ideally, you get another big who is better than Korndog but I don't think that's a HUGE need.

I would pencil in Brissett as one of the top 9, he and Walsh are the ones with guaranteed deals.

The one name on there that is just unconscionable to me is Grant Williams. Why in the world would he be one of the leading voices on the team? He's younger than the Jays, he's worse at basketball.....
Maybe that's the true "addition by subtraction" from the locker room and not Smart
He's a big personality and a VP of the union, the best players have a lot of pull, but also often random guys who have big personalities, and/or who other guys think are smart. Grant gave the impression he might be the go to guy in the lockerroom on rules/union stuff, etc.

We know so little of these players real-life personalities. Grant looks like a total jerk on the court between constantly barking at officials and getting in Butler's face prematurely in a game. But he may also be a really fun person to share a locker room and multiple plane rides with. And he obviously had enough cred with players to get a high level position in the NBAPA, which says something right there.

The final step for Tatum to be a legit MVP candidate is upping his scoring efficiency while still keeping close to 30 ppg. That happens either by maintaining his 3p volume and getting back to around 40% from behind the arc, or it means taking fewer 3 point shots and spending more time getting to the rim and the FT line. Adding 11 pounds of muscle feels like he's focusing on the latter, which is fine with me.

If JT truly put on 11# of muscle, he’s going to be a combo of Karl Malone & Lebron James when he drives through the lane. Defenders will bounce off of him.

Actually if the pics are accurate it looks like Truth shed a few lbs working out with Deuce and Jayson
Correct.

“I spent every day with Paul (Pierce) for like 3 1/2-4 weeks… it was cool to just have him around…. Even he started to get motivated. He lost 15-18 pounds… it was an honor to have him around.”

Yeah he looked a bit lighter than his KG Certified broadcasts from the playoffs last spring.

PP is a Celtic for life. He wants another chip too so he won't corrupt Tatum until they get at least one more. After that we might get Tatum's Aaron Rodgers phase but first things first.

Bill Simmons suggests on his pod that Harden to Miami now makes too much sense. Like for Lowry and small picks. Redemption shot, chip on their collective shoulders being overlooked for Milwaukee and Boston (both of whom they beat last year), etc.
Unless Morey has a change of values, he's gonna demand more than Miami would be willing to give up.

Unless Embiid says "get him off my team or I'm gonna start making noise," I can see him holding onto Harden right up until the deadline. He won't take what he thinks is a bad deal right up until he has to.

Horford may be the top guy off the bench but he is not a typical 6th man/bench scorer. I'm not sure the Celtics have one of those anymore.

If the lineup is:

C: Porzingis
PF: Tatum
SF: Brown
SG: White
PG: Holliday

Then the rotation backups will be:
  • Horford, C/PF
  • Pritchard, 3rd G
  • Hauser, F
  • Brissett, F
  • Kornet, C or Banton, G-F depending on how much 2-big they want to play
I don't think Walsh will play much early on. The remaining guys are all on camp deals I think.

Right, they'll likely just stagger Holiday/White and Brown/Tatum to recreate the typical 6th man scorer setup.

I want Hauser playing with as many of the starters as possible, so having him be the first guy off the bench would make sense, likely for Tatum who has been the first guy off the court the last couple of years.

I bet Svi sees regular minutes because from what I understand, he's more of a movement shooter than PP and Hauser, both of whom I see as catch and shoot guys.

I think they try PP in the microwave role early on (regular season, low-stakes games). He’s the guy on the bench who has shown he can fill it up in volume when given the green light. Dude can shoot it.

Does anyone know what the official coaching staff is? Specifically the "first row"?
CJM, Cassell and Charles Lee are 3 of them but I believe there are 4 assistants on the first row? Has there been any confirmation on the 4th?

Looks like Bullock is signing with the Rockets on a minimum deal. That's too bad, he would have been a good get by Boston
Isn't he kind of meh defensively? Might have thought we wouldn't really get playing time.
