Anyone else getting the sense that there may be something to the Brian Flores issues in Miami? Like Ross is telling other owners how bad it was? It seems odd to me that he hasnt been hired yet, or even really linked with anything other than Houston.

Giants and Bears also are interviewing Flores

Also, none of the openings have been filled yet

Counterpoint. Every year in SF Peter King would have a lot of detailed inside the warroom stories the day after the draft about how Baalke had bamboozled the other teams and had the bestest draft every

example (story discussed in link)
https://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/165494-trent-baalke-weekend-per-peter-king/
Noticeably absent from this fawning coverage would be Baalke's infatuation with guys recovering from ACL injuries that never seemed to pan out. See: Marcus Lattimore. Or his belief that his players were soooo good that he could force out Jim Harbaugh and successfully replace him with a literal buffoon (Jim Tomsula). Sorry, the guy just triggers me.

On the one hand... yeah.
On the other, Jim Harbaugh's players were retiring at like 25 to get away from him, I'm not sure keeping him long term was an option anyway.

the fact that none of the openings have been filled is also surprising to me.
It's kind of an owners' agreement not to take attention away from the playoffs. There might be one or two announcements, but I suspect we'll start seeing things unfold Monday

Maybe they all kind of expected the Payton news (Breer has been talking about him leaving the Saints for weeks) and are waiting for other possible dominoes?

Looks like Flores is staring down the barrel of Daniel Jones and the Giants, where Mara already publicly came out and said they are not trading for Watson.

If Flores didn’t like Tua, he’s going to personally turn Jones into a speed bump In the parking lot.

When the Jaguars private plane was in Denver on Monday, it wasn't there to take Nathaniel Hackett to Jacksonville for an interview; it was there to pick up former Broncos HC Vic Fangio, who has interviewed for Jaguars' HC job, per league sources. Fangio is a candidate for Jaguars

Vic Fangio and Jaguars' GM Trent Baalke worked together for four years in San Francisco.

The Giants are going to hire back to back former Patriots? Doesn’t feel likely. And yes I realize Miami is too if they hire Daboll, but he’s had multiple jobs since leaving NE so that feels different.

I joked before that Flores has the charm of Joe Judge, but has some wins to back it up.

I think the Giants like the idea of having a hard-ass coach, but if you aren’t winning, that grows old very quick. In Flores’s case, sometimes you might be winning and it still grows old.

Like you said, Daboll feels pretty far removed from being a “Patriots guy” even though he’s served under both Bill and Saban.

I actually like Matt E a lot. Just get that OC right and make sure Fields develops. I don’t think you need an OC type for HC either. It’s not like Daboll et al. didn’t develop Josh Allen fine.

The issue with hiring a defensive guy is the instability it can present to the offense and potentially your QB. Offensive guys tend to be the guys that get hired away for HC opportunities.

Will Josh Allen be 100% fine with Brian Daboll and/or Ken Dorsey? He might be. But we don’t know that.

To be clear, I don’t disagree with you. I think you can be a defensive minded head coach and win, but you have to be able to hire a good offensive staff, and possibly do it multiple times.

Sean McDermott got it right once. If Daboll and Dorsey leave, can he do it again?

Of course the Bears are hiring a defensive HC. The last time they had a good offense, MTV was still showing music videos.
I decided to look this up because I was curious.
Last year that they had a no doubt good offense was 2013, 2nd in points, 8th in yards.
Only case since would be 2018, 9th in points... but they were 21st in yards which makes me think it was mostly getting points from the #1 defense's work.

Raiders requested today a head coach interview with Patriots' offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, per league source. McDaniels now expected to interview with the Raiders.

The #Raiders have put in a request to interview #Patriots OC Josh McDaniels for their vacant HC job, source said. The hope is he interviews on Friday and he’s considered a top candidate.

Josh leaving would be interesting, not sure who the logical OC choice would be.
I guess re-tread B.o'B.?

That's a good move for the Raiders.... and I think the Pats offense could use a fresh approach too.

There was a story in the Athletic that there was a hiccup in the deal:

“McDaniels apparently had been calling coaches around the league about putting together a staff, but it appears something happened in the last 24 hours,” Vic Tafur writes. “League sources don’t know if the issue was about compensation or the power structure in Las Vegas or both, but it seems Ziegler and McDaniels are not the leaders in the clubhouse anymore.”
I assume that issue is now resolved and McDaniels will become the next HC of the LVR. Query as to whether any other NEP coaches will join his staff.

I definitely think McDaniels deserves another chance, and ultimately I hope BB wants to stick around long enough that it probably doesn't make sense for it to be here, but Raiders doesn't make sense to me. He needs to make the most out of this chance and he's going to take the non Mahomes/Herbert/looming Rodgers team in the AFC West?!

Agree on both points, though I am a bit concerned about a new OC for Mac in year 2. BoB would be a nice replacement.

Pats offense was really good when he was here. And yes, I know he had Brady.

He didn't coach Mac at Alabama but apparently they worked together a bit.

Bit of hyperbole on my part obviously. But they're pretty regularly topped out at average, and often pretty bad. For whatever reason they seem committed to trying to win games by cornering the market on linebackers and special teams.

I agree, I would lean very strong to an offensive guy in today's landscape, especially with a young developing QB. Can't make a blanket statement but the QB/coach combo is just so crucial in today's NFL.

Hiring a good D oriented coach sounds nice, but then the OC hire becomes even more important. Problem is, you're left with basically 2 options.

1. Bad OC hire, likely sets the young QB back, and have to hire a new OC soon.

2. Good OC hire, gets interest around the league, hired as a HC in 1-2 years. Need a new OC soon.

I guess the goal is option 3..... decent but not good enough to yet yanked away for a HC job? Not ideal.

You might get lucky with a BB/McDaniels situation that works for many years (til now potentially), but that's not the norm.

That piece in the athletic was from yesterday and Rapoport tweeted this just a little while ago. Perhaps the Athletic has bad intel?

These guys have huge egos. Sure a rational person would be like that division is a tough place to compete in, but these lunatics believe they can scheme the shit out of Carr or QB X and win. Plus the Raiders made the playoffs with their bizarre coaching year, they are not the Giants.

Yeah the Raiders have the toughest division probably, but on the other hand, they also have the best roster of the open spots, maybe the best owner too. You step in with your guy at GM, you're going to be a playoff contender day 1. Also, the South and North are kinda garbage right now, so 3 teams out of the West isn't crazy.
