I think the problem with that is receiving team can just take a fair catch. That's the reason traditional inside kicks always go down first.

I think he was trying to do that play the Pats tried last year or the season before. Where they kind of pooch it into no mans land behind the returning team's front line and then have a foot race to the ball. But he got too much of it.

When they showed him warming up, he was practicing giving the ball loft and kicking it lightly, so it seems intentional but too much power.
