US has gotten two huge breaks from the ref in this game. Poor penalty and the no red card.

I'll take it.

I thought the foul continued well into the box.  It's not first contact, right?  It's not like a trip where they touch for only an instant and the player falls forward -- the foul continued into the box.

Actually, the ref on call says holding is the only continuation.

That's contrary to what I've understood, but I have trouble believing he is wrong, but I'm sure we'll hear all about it if this score holds up.

JP and Doctor whomever fail to mention that the call had to be made in real time from 15+ yards away, without "looking at the replay several times" as their rules expert said

He's wrong.  FIFA guidance only specifically mentions holding.  It doesn't say that holding is the only foul for continuing play.

The foul was for what FIFA calls charging.  The defender created space for herself using her body both inside and outside the penalty area.   It's a little weird to call because charging usually occurs when two players are moving in opposite directions, but Morgan's momentum took her into the box as she's trying to get the ball.  It's a stone cold penalty in my book.

The law is very terse -- it says only that the foul must be one of the various offenses committed in the box.  Your interpretation seems right to me, because the foul doesn't happen just in one moment in time.  Usually, it is "first contact" that matters, because most of the time the foul in question is a trip, and that's a situation where there's only one touch and so the questions is where the touch occurred.  This was such a clumsy foul that it seems like she was still being fouled well into the box.  But like many of the LOG, the interpretations are what matters here, I suppose.

What I really don't understand is why the FIFA feed only shows field level replays of the contact.  It'd be easier to gauge if we got a better angle.  I'm willing to say I'm wrong if the only contact was outside the box.

I don't understand what you mean by the foul continued into the box?  The last replay they just showed (granted not in slow mo) shows Morgan getting checked off the ball outside the box.  Its not like she kept fouling Morgan into the box.  She fell into the box after the hip check.  Unless I'm missing something...

I saw it as Morgan basically getting carried by the defender's hip in the box.  Like I said, though, a different angle might convince me of what you saw.

Rapinoe had really stopped impacting the match, I don't mind the sub. Germany content to try to score screamers. Not patient enough in attack

I just erased the post I had half written about how stupid it was to bring in Wambach. That is what her possession ability can do.

That, and she can clear headers if the Germans get free kicks/corners.

Exactly - at 1-0 late, she is probably one of the best set piece defenders . I guess that holds at 2-0, but more important at 1-0
