Here's a ref commentator, for what it's worth, who says that at least according to US Soccer guidance interpreting the LOG, the continuation principle is not limited to holding and should be interpreted to give the greatest benefit to the fouled player with respect to where on the field the foul occurred.   http://www.askasoccerreferee.com/?p=4174

2 semi-finals, 4 penalties called. All 4 calls in some way incorrect under the official FIFA rules.
2 outside the box, 1 dive, 1 correct penalty, but no red given when it should.
Real banner tournament for what are supposed to be the best women's refs in the world.

Did the Japan defender step on the England player's leg?  Doesn't mean it's not a dive, but I would like to see some better replays.

Edit:  Uh oh, Dr. Joe agrees.  I must be wrong!

California. Duh.
The US already gets an extra day of rest, having their opponent have to go 120 minutes to get through wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Japan is so the women's Barca. Pretty passing, small players. Utterly confused on throw-ins.

That is a spectacularly English way to end a match.
I was predicting a loss on penalties, cos that is the usual England way - this is worse. Gutted.

I feel terrible for Bassett. She's going to relive that moment for the rest of her life.

Yeah. There was no time for her team to recover from that. I wasn't rooting for England but I can feel that loss in the pit of my stomach.

Awful.

She was trying to clear it. She clears it and they likely head to OT.

Looked like she was just trying to touch it to the right to get it out of the Japanese player's path and got it right off the toe.

Edit- It was also a great break by the Japanese, their striker had position on the centerback, so if it plays through clean she's at least going to get off a good shot from 12 yards if she can control.

Here
England really deserved to win. They outplayed Japan pretty handily in that second half.

Making them play Germany now is just cruel.

The axis powers are going to get some more revenge, I fear -- England is going to get crushed in that game.

That was awful.  The only soccer match in recent history I can think of that compares for cruelty was the 2010 Ghana-Uruguay ending.

Did you change channel? There's a postgame show on.
They signed off and said, see you on the web then rolled an MMA show. If they did do a postgame they need to roll the postgame right out of the ending. Very poor from FOX either way.

That brought back horrific, vivid memories of Jeff Agoos. At least we still won that game, and just a group stage match at that. Gut-wrenching way to go.

Finally got around to watching the screw up on the own goal. The timing of it reminds me of Arsenal's botching in the League Cup final vs Birmingham in 2011. Mentally ready for extra time but having it all taken away from you before you can even get there. Devastating.

Flipped over during a pause in the Chile-Argentina game.  The game that neither team wanted to play in will go another 30 minutes. GER 0-0 ENG after 90.

Oargh...That penalty was a joke (again), but how dumb do you have to be to lose that battle in the box right after the throw-in...it´s just deserved to lose by that (no-)penalty. Every girl cries and hopefully learns something out of that poor showing. It would actually be best if Sylvia Neid stepped down instantly and someone would take over until Steffi Jones takes over after the Olympic Games next year (contract starts September ´16).
The young girls did ok, that was alright. What was missing? Creativity in midfield and in build-up (defense, too, where Annike Krahn started with tens of long balls). Of course a missing world footballer like Nadine Keßler in defensive midfield would have helped linking defense and midfield. It will be exciting to see the team when Nadine Angerer is gone, although it can probably only go downhill in keeper performance.

Now let´s hope for a decent final with more action than yesterday.
