Per Schefter he asked to be released. Wonder if he's retiring.

@AdamSchefter: WR Reggie Wayne asked to be released, according to source.

Edit: Some are faster and funnier.

Found the locker room bugs and hightailed it outta Foxboro, collecting $450k in the process. That'd be my guess.

If he asks out and retires bet he gives most of that money back

He signed with a team that he thought wanted so badly to win that they'd resort to cheating. Now that Brady's suspension was overturned...not so much.

Thanks, OBerman.

“@AdamSchefter: Expectation around the NFL is that former Patriots WR Reggie Wayne now will retire.”

Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter, 9/5/15, 4:18 PM): Former Colts and Patriots WR Reggie Wayne likely would be willing to play again -- but only in right situation, per source."
Doesn't sound like Wayne was thrilled with way things were playing out for him in NE, or Pats were likely going to cut him anyway. Asking out lets him save some face if he still thinks he can play.

Here
Coleman and McClain gone. Is Deltha coming back? The Arrington cut still seems odd, who's playing slot?

I think if you could have a beef with the Pats in the last two drafts is there were lots of high quality receivers available and they drafted 1 (Jeremy Gallon 2014 7th round). They clearly are thin at WR.

Looking like another lean year for the WR corps - lotta Twitter speculation from the beat guys that Pats may give Kenbrell Thompkins a call (released by Oakland this week). Also wonder if they give a vet guy like James Jones a look after being cut by Giants today.

With LaFell out for the next 2 months, it's put up or shutup time for Dobson.

Would be hilarious if LaFell exposes that all these "insider" reports on him going to PUP were based on nothing more than his own cryptic "10/25" tweet.

Reiss has PUP on his blog (under his byline) citing Yates.

"FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots wide receiver Brandon LaFell has been placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, meaning he is ineligible to play until the seventh week of the regular season, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates."

So we'll see.

That was part of the Pats test of which media members have actual sources and which are just reading twitter and/or making things up

So Reiss fails? Or did someone at ESPN post under his name citing Yates?

Truth is we don't know yet.

His more recent tweet could be as simple as 'excited for season to start'

It's the problem with treating Twitter as a clear source of information

Yates worked for Pats not long ago, so if he says PUP, I tend to believe it. Different story had it been Volin, SMY, or pretty much anyone on the Globe beat.

EDIT: to slow, see tweet above

Further evidence that Brady/Belichick are not the easiest guys to play for, particularly at WR. (e.g. Holt, Galloway, Ocho, now Wayne, et al.)

Agreed.

Could mean:

(a) Hey, thought it looked like PUP, but now I'm good to go!

(b) Disregard my last (now deleted) tweet. Coach told me not to say anything yet. (And I should have known better.) But, hey, I'm excited for 9/10! And I even used a ton of smiley faces. (Even though you'll find out shortly I'm on PUP.)

Or something.

While I'd love (a), I am leaning (b). Here's hoping I am wrong.

Guessing it's not too often Belichick feels the need to issue a statement after releasing a player who's been in camp for less than 2 weeks. Is he just kissing Wayne's ass in hopes he agrees to pay back his $450k signing bonus?

Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe, 9/5/15, 5:47 PM): Not sure if Reggie Wayne will (or was even asked to) return his $450,000 signing bonus. "Never came up," a source said.

Reggie Wayne spent the week memorizing the Patriots' playbook. He'll return to Indy with the goods. #wherearethestolenplans #starswarsjoke

Here's a hint, hand-off between the tackles. Rinse and repeat.

Wow. Zolak tweeting that a source close to Wayne said he wanted out because the work environment "was too serious, not fun."

<p>https://twitter.com/scottzolak/status/640277179432050689"]

Doesn't really ring true to me seeing as how Wayne spent most of his career catching passes from one of the game's greatest on-field a-holes, not to mention the hitman.

Nah. I translated it as: "Reggie's a guy I always loved on the field but he's toast now and sucks."

Very happy for a guy like Chris Harper. Worked hard, improved a lot, made some noise in the pre season games and earned his spot on the 53. From the looks of our WR depth chart, we will need him to keep on making plays.

Easy to imagine that when he heard, for example, "Reggie, you're on the scout team for this one.  Did you study Antonio Brown's moves last night?"  he thought that life was pretty short to deal with this...

People trying to spin this as "industrial" (the word of the week) espionage are moronic.

It will be exciting to see whether some of these younger and untested guys step up but, from an objective standpoint, our talent at the WR and RB positions simply blows.  I'm a big believer in the RBs-are-largely-fungible thesis but we're taking that to new levels at this point.  And while I'm sort of glad both Harper and Dobson made the team, there is a very high likelihood that neither of them does shit this year.

We're going to see a ton of 2 TE sets and a lot of balls thrown to Gronk, Chandler, and Edelman.  Lets pray that trio stays healthy.

Aren't the Pats likely to emphasize the pass quite a lot on opening weekend so waiting for Blount to return isn't a big deal? I don't think having Gray on the roster or off changes how good or not their depth is at that position.

I'm assuming you're joking.

For those who are actually making this claim, you don't get 14,300 yards in the NFL if you're gutless or soft.

Fully agreed.

Just to be clear, I think it is very different to say that the role he can fill (and that the team wants him to play at this point in his career) isn't one he is interested in.  Which seems somewhat likely to me.

Yeah, I think he interned with them every summer when he was in college, before working for Pioli in KC. When Field posts news about the pats (like the typo about Wendell's (?) bonus) he isn't guessing. If you saw the ESPN segment on him being featured in the Nantucket Magazine, you can figure out his Foxboro connection.
