2015 Patriots 53-man Roster & Practice Squad Watch

I wouldn't be shocked if Morris is brought back even before Thursday's game - IIRC, BB often does this flurry of "back and forth mix and match" between cut-down and first game. That's my hope, anyway - I like what I've seen out of Morris this far.

Giants released Henry Hynoski:

@AdamSchefter Giants released FB Henry Hynoski.

If Pats were looking for a Develin replacement, this guy is it. He's an even better run blocker than Develin. With a healthy grain of salt, here's 2014 FB chart:

Although he doesn't have the Develin's sneaky good catching ability. BR recently had an article about how important HH is to the Giants:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2523221-why-fb-henry-hynoski-is-still-critical-to-the-ny-giants-offenses-success

He was just signed in March for a $2.1m 2-year deal starting in 2015, so it's a bit of a surprise that he got released. However Nikita Whitlock (the other FB on the roster) has been knocking people out in camp. Plus, unlike HH, Whitlock plays special teams and even a bit of DT, his position in college (source). Plus this:

@art_stapleton
Nikita Whitlock $435K
Henry Hynoski $975K

If BB still wanted to have a pure FB on the roster, you can't do better than Hynoski at this point. He's a bull (or a rhino -- his nickname is the "Hynocerus"), and I think Pats fans will love the guy:

@MarkDanielsPJ I didn't see Robert McClain in the locker room before practice. That doesnt mean he's not there, but we'll find out when we get outside soon

@MikeReiss Spent a few minutes with #Patriots rookie CB Justin Coleman. Signed Friday. Said no team spent more time w/ him in pre-draft process than NE

McClain cut per Loyko.[/quote
I had been arguing that BB won't keep 4 CBs but starting before this cut I wasn't so sure. Now I'm really wondering. Basically, they Pats have quality depth at DL they risk losing if they cut them (Rufus Johnson, in particular, on top of all the draftees). The CBs on the other hand are a bunch of JAGs who might hang around if cut (McClain is the top of that list).

I guess we'll see soon.

Gray after week 1 wouldn't be a huge surprise. But today it would be. Wayne got a lot of money too. Guessing this is smoke.

@DougKyedNESN A league source tells me the Patriots are calling teams, shopping around for a big-bodied receiver.

I guess this means LaFell starts on PUP. Can't imagine Wayne getting cut only after such a short time, but we've seen crazier things around Foxboro.

I was just going to ask if cutting Wayne would be out of the question due to his salary.  And if they're shopping for a big-bodied receiver, does that mean Dobson is gone?  Because I'd think they'd simply slot him into Lafell's slot if they had confidence in him.

@jeffphowe I guess the Pats could theoretically cut Wayne and then bring him back on the same contract minus the signing bonus after Week 1.

I can't quite see Wayne getting signed elsewhere, so this may be an interesting option. Reiss also reports that JoJo is still on active/PUP, rather than reserve/PUP. The decision must be made by 4pm EST.

@MikeReiss If WR Brandon LaFell is moved to reserve/PUP list (decision due by 4 p.m.), he wouldn't be eligible to play for first six weeks of season.

They're probably going to throw the ball 50 times next week so maybe Gray is just gone for a week. Or maybe the quick benching last year was an illustration the staff didn't like his game that much

Cutting Wayne wouldn't shock me he might just be toast

I would be shocked if he made it back to the Pats.

@MarkDanielsPJ I talked to Travaris Cadet today and he seemed really confident. We now know why.

Glad they're keeping Cadet. He looked like a playmaker earlier in camp.

Regarding Gray, it has to be his attitude. The whispers out of Foxboro was that the missed practice last year was not his first incident. The staff must have felt it wasn't worth it.

So, who's the man Thursday night?

Brady coming out with no RBs all night?

More Gray news:

@jeffphowe If the Patriots have cut Jonas Gray, they haven't told him about it yet, per source.

@FieldYates League source: the Patriots are planning to move on from RB Jonas Gray, but don't dismiss the idea that he could be traded still.

You'd think they could get a 6th or a 7th for a guy who showed that kind of promise, that includes a dipshit discount.

Montee Ball available?

I believe he's sticking on the Broncos.

Per Ian Logue, from that "other" site:

This preseason Gray carried 19 times for 107 yards, averaging 5.6 yards per carry (the highest average among Patriots running backs) and also had a 55-yard touchdown.

He was at 2.9 YPC excluding the long run FWIW. Though much of the struggles pre season were interior OL problems.

Yeah I like that the YPC and the long run were presented as unrelated, though agreed Jim Brown would've had a tough time gaining much behind these guys so far.

To be fair, Brown is 79 years old.

This should come as no surprise, but Dion Lewis makes the team:

Best development besides DFG victory.

@cpriceNFL Many Patriots who might be considered bubble candidates have not heard anything about their status at this point.

True, but there were tweets all morning about how the Pats will make their cuts AFTER the last practice today.

Surprised by the Gray news. Does this mean both White and Lewis make the cut?

I guess I'm not too worried about some combo of Bolden/Lewis/White splitting carries against the Steelers. Bolden is at least serviceable, and Lewis has really flashed during the preseason.

I don't think so. I'd rather have Branch who has been in our system.

Agree. I thought Gray and Blount were going to be the two-headed monster light this year. I must've been ridiculously optimistic about Gray but at any rate, our running game suddenly looks pretty weak

Agreed. Genuinely excited about him. Looked very "Kevin Faulk-y" all preseason.

Definitely.  I hope Gray's release serves as a wake-up call for the other RB's on the roster, because I don't want to see another snoozefest in the running game like after Ridley went down last year.

Not feeling great about WR depth with this news and LaFell not practicing. Hoping that Scott Chandler becomes a big piece to make up for it. Dobson safe?

We are into the 16th year of the BB dynasty and every year people shit themselves after he cuts, trades or doesn't re-sign a player. His track record speaks for itself. I expect he cut Gray because he thought the other guys were better.

Per Schefter he asked to be released. Wonder if he's retiring.

@AdamSchefter: WR Reggie Wayne asked to be released, according to source.

Found the locker room bugs and hightailed it outta Foxboro, collecting $450k in the process. That'd be my guess.
