Meanwhile, it's becoming apparent that the Revis thread needs a new subtitle: "The division is wide open."

Would not be shocked if Super Bowl champs found good value plays in a few Skins (Orakpo, Helu) and Percy Harvin depending on Revis outcome

Re: Spikes

He retweeted a buzzfeed article about Craig James moments before this. No idea if they're related.

Patriots did not tender contracts to WRs Brian Tyms and Greg Orton, meaning they are free agents.

Would have thought they might want Tyms back, but that seems low-priority atm

I mean, I know he's been a clubhouse cancer everywhere he has gone, but he would be an absolute explosive component to the Pats offense. Aside from Revis, he is the #1 guy I wanted to see on this team in 2015 from a FA perspective.

Definitely. And it sounds like Belichick has had his eye on him for a while. I'd give him a 1 year, Haynesworth-type make good contract with options. Not sure how much he'll end up getting though.

If he's smart, he'll take a one year deal at short money with Pats, Ravens, or Steelers and prove himself capable of being a team player.  If he succeeds, he'll make plenty next offseason.

I don't know, 4 teams in 4 years may make him want to get some level of stability. Throwing 2-3 years at him with $8-10 guaranteed ($15-20mill total??) might be worth a shot. I would think he is past the point of any team giving him a big money contract between the injuries and the attitude problems.

Hope they pass on Harvin, don't like the chances he is both healthy and has his head on straight and there are other positions with bigger needs.

Any idea how the Pats are doing towards that 89% cash spend?  Doesn't seem like they have a lot of big bonuses left to dole out unless they extend Hightower and Solder.  McCourty helps but don't think that will get them there.

No, but it's a total non factor because they have until the start of the 2017 league year (essentially until the minute before free agency starts in 2017) to hit the cash requirement for 2013-2016--a late Collins/Hightower/Jones extension on the eve of free agency in 2017 could push them over the edge.

The importance of the 89% cash spending requirement is just remarkably overstated.

Thought they had to hit the 89% this season, thanks for clarifying.

The McCourty signing, according to Miguel, was counted in 2014 and got them to 88.54 percent for the first two years of the four year period. So they are right on track. The other thing nobody pushing a Pats are cheap agenda wants to mention is that the reason the Pats got behind in 2013 is that in 2011 and 2012, they had spent 120% (or $60 million) cash over the cap. Takes a while to catch back up after that if you want to avoid a cap violation. The Patriots aren't who this rule was addressed to. They won't have a problem being in compliance by the end of the 2016 league year.

I do too but won't get upset over a short term make good contract. Realistically, there may be a Percy itch destined to be scratched.

More concerned about durability than anything else. First three years he missed very few games. Last three he has missed 7, 15 and 3

With Murray apparently going to Philly, I'd be really interested in seeing what it would take to get Sproles in a Pats uniform.  From what I can tell, he'd have a cap number of $4.1m this season, then $4.5m next season (or just a $1m hit if he is cut).  I think he'd give the Pats the closest thing to what Vereen would have given them, on a short term contract without too much risk.  What I don't know is what it would take to get him (Philly acquired him for a fifth-round pick a year ago), and how being traded might affect the PHI and NE cap situations.

Chip's regime brooks no dissent; that's not a criticism, just an observation. Sproles made some critical remarks when Shady was sent packing.

Just as BB reportedly has a Harvin itch, I have a Sproles itch. Always loved him, and he'd be a terror in our offense. But not getting hopes high.

If they were OK with a $3MM+ cap number for that spot, I think they'd have just signed Vereen rather than sending a draft pick for Sproles.

Right, he would have to be cut and then signed, otherwise they'd have to extend / restructure to bring it down.

Reiss chatting, this was part of the into:

The name I'm keeping on eye as the next domino to fall for the Patriots is RB Reggie Bush. Makes a lot of sense to potentially fill the significant Shane Vereen void. Great fit in this offense.

I like Bush on cheap dollars, but who are we going to get to play the 6-8 games that he misses with injuries? And I'm being serious.

James White was drafted for this exact purpose, if he can't even fill in adequately in his second season, that's a waste of a draft pick.

Not sure Bush would even meet Vereen's 2014 production at this point, especially with Blount, White, and Gray also in the mix.

I agree.  I guess my thinking was that the Pats were hoping to sign Revis, so they had to let Vereen go to free up some cap space, but now that Revis is gone, they have a little more breathing room to address the 3rd down RB spot.  I guess there's a very small chance Sproles gets cut, and if so I'd love to see the Pats get him.
