Bills are going w Tyrod Taylor as their starting a QB

Cassel or Manuel have to be on the chopping block now. No way they keep all 3. I think they keep Manuel due to draft status and his age over Cassel, but maybe they'd rather have a veteran to back up Taylor in case he falls flat on his face.

Taylor definitely brings an athleticism and another element to the position that neither Manuel or Cassel can match. I think it's interesting with Ryan's philosophy of play great defense, run the ball, and don't turn it over, that they go with the least experienced guy.

Since Ryan's philosophy can more accurately be described as "play great defense, run the ball between the tackles twice, give the ball to inexperienced QB on 3rd and long, LOLZ, fuckup, lather/rinse/repeat, lose 28-6," I think it's a perfect fit.

I think Rex let Greg Roman make the call; Roman and Harbaugh made the Kaepernick over Alex Smith transition together and this seems a similar call.
Roman also coached Andrew Luck, so I think Rex will defer to him on QB matters until things get really bad.

This is the kind of deal that could cripple a franchise. $60m gtd for Dareus is insane.

Edit: more details about the deal:

@viccarucci
Base new money for Dareus is $95M. Including incentive new money, it's $100.35M, according to #NFL source. Over 7 yrs, he could earn $108M.

And it makes the Jets job a little harder too. They have a big defense contract to ink soon.

Lots of big money contracts going out to defensive guys.

Bills have (and Rex Ryan) have tried great defense & no QB before, it doesn't usually work out.

Good luck to the Bills fans.

Rex Ryan: “I can’t wait to see what our fans are going to be like when you have the hated Patriots — I mean, this kind of rival coming in."

Their fans will be like the same way they have been for the last 15 years in Ralph Wilson Stadium--excited for a few spirit building minutes of the game before losing 13 of 15 contests at HOME to "this kind of rival".
13.3 home winning percentage against the hated Patriots.

Or maybe he means like Jets fans have been when he's coaching in a Patriots rivalry, where the winning percentage jumps up to 30%.

I feel like there's some tie-in between Trump's popularity and Ryan's.  Dude's admitting - no, that's not right, he's pretending - that he's committing malpractice as a coach, and people will love him for it.  Never mind the fact that this is just wonderful bulletin board material.

It's going to be a long week for SJH, and if it's capped by a blue Monday next week, watch out in here.

It's going to be a formidable challenge. "A game" required.

Dareus also returns from his suspension, right?

I forgot he didn't even play the Colts game.

It's going to be an interesting week for the Pats O-line.

I was literally just discussing with a buddy how apt the Trump/Ryan comparison is at the same time you were probably writing this post.  It really is quite amazing how similar they are in different worlds.  They are both more style than substance but have built an incredible brand via bringing lots of media attention to anything resembling a personal triumph (deserved or otherwise).  Both pretend to speak the truth in a world of BS, as you pointed out.  Additionally, both have weird public obsessions with a personal arch nemesis who likely spends a tiny fraction of the time thinking about Rex/Trump. (Said differently, Trump:Obama :: Ryan:Belichick)

I'm now pretty sure Trump has a foot fetish.  I do seriously doubt he'll put out a craigslist add offering to let you sleep with his wife, though.

edit: And they both had the family business handed down to them by their father. I'm also now wondering if Fred Trump III was his equally obnoxious but slightly less talented brother.

Don't sleep on Tony C either. Those are my boys when it comes to Rex posts. Very much looking forward to it, popcorn is ready.

Oconnor with a nice write up on what's wrong with Rex

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/13704595/bills-rex-ryan-never-talk-way-title-bill-belichick-watch

His team had played recklessly, making Belichick's toughest job of the day figuring out which penalties to decline and which to accept. For good measure, Ryan chipped in his own unsportsmanlike conduct penalty from the bench.

Hey, there's a reason (beyond Brady) why Belichick has won 12 of the past 14 AFC East titles -- he never wavers. Told Sunday that Ryan conceded defeat in the matchup of dueling headsets, Belichick wouldn't bite. He credited his players and maintained they "probably overcame some not-so-great coaching on my part."

Even though nothing will come of this...

"In the memo sent last month reminding all teams of the NFL’s in-stadium noise policies, the league said this: “The home team is permitted to play audio while the visiting team is on offense and the play clock is running. The audio must cease by the time the play clock reaches 20 seconds, or when the visiting team’s offense reaches the line of scrimmage, whichever occurs first...

...the Patriots used the no-huddle offense on multiple occasions, and on multiple occasions when the Patriots used the no-huddle offense the Bills were blaring the train horn."

Florio makes a good point: the NFL's vendetta against the Pats for crimes real and imagined essentially means teams can do what the Bills did yesterday (and more) and expect zero repercussions from the league, because the NFL has put the Pats in  position where they're unable to complain about anything. There's zero chance the league slaps the Bills' hands for this.

Good job, good effort Roger, you dimwitted fuckface.

They violated a memo?  That's worth a 1st rounder yes?

Nah. Just have your GM admit it, profusely apologize, blame and fire the sound guy, and it's a suspension for the GM from his cushy side gig when nothing is happening, and a 5th rounder.

Matt Hasslebeck with a good insight on D&C this morning.  It was not hard to predict going into that game that the Bills would not handle prosperity well and would be undisciplined.  We have seen that act out of Ryan's teams for years.  (As have we seen the patented "put the blame on me" after a loss routine).  The win one, lose one pattern is quite recognizable.

But Hasselebeck added that playing on or even over the edge is one thing for defensive players.  They are often well served by playing on emotional overdrive (though not at Aaron Williams' level of out of control).  It's quite another thing when the offense and the coaching staff are a few steps beyond.  That leads to too geeked up QBs, among other things, and might be a partial explanation for some of the high and forced passes.  Rex getting an unsportsmanlike penalty was classic Rexy and really pretty  unusual for NFL head coaches.  And he probably deserved at least one more.

Don't ever change, Rexy.  And don't go back to what you are most suited for: being a defensive coordinator.

Coaches (and players) in team sports who publicly "take the blame" when blame is almost always a shared thing want/think they deserve all the credit when things go well.

It was really obvious they were doing that on the Pat's first drive when Brady had to call the TO. The announcers kept talking about how loud the crowd was, but there were airhorns blaring the entire time.

Nothing will come of it, of course, but another reason why I think the persecution-complex of Patriots fans isn't entirely absurd.

Apparently, once the Blue Jays clinch a playoff berth (# is 1) the Bills will now have the longest playoff drought of the 4 leagues in the US.

That's a good enough excuse for me to remind people how the Bills last playoff game ended:

Was it ever made public what had Aaron Williams going postal on the sideline?  It looked like he just found out that Delonte West was sleeping with his mother.

The situation with McCoy is interesting.  They're clearly running him out there at less than 100%.  Rex doesn't seem open to sitting him to heal, while McCoy at the very least doesn't dismiss the idea out of hand.  With Karlos Williams producing, it doesn't seem like there would be much downside to having LeSean take a few weeks off.

Ryan resisted the idea of sitting McCoy out for the Bills' upcoming game against the New York Giants (1-2).
"Nah, I'll tell you: He's such a weapon" Ryan said. "If we just get him back, if he gets a little bit back -- get a little better, a little better, a little better -- eventually he'll get all the way back. That would be fantastic. But man, it's so hard to do that [sit him]. He's such a great player.

McCoy seemed more open about the possibility of resting his hamstring this week.
"We got to look at everything," he said. "We'll figure it out. I'm not sure right now. I don't have a definite answer. We'll see what's going on."
"... That's part of football. Just got to find a medium between being tough -- and laying it on the line for your teammates -- and being smart."

Rex named Richie Incognito (and, to be fair, three other ex-Dolphins)  team captain yesterday just to try to get under the Dolphins skin.

It's like he thinks its high school or something.  I actually hope the Giants beat them next week, and not just for divisional reasons.

I am guessing that Rexy and the Bills are going to embarrass Eli like they did Luck and Tannehill, but he has of course lost to Eli before. Big game for both teams. Bills can't afford to lose these types of games if they want to be a playoff team, and while the NFC East is wide open, a 3rd loss this early would hurt the Giants quite a bit.

Jeff Fisher did this to the Redskins with the RGIII trade ammo, and Fisher is relentlessly ball washed even though he hasn't won a goddamn thing in forever. But Fisher supposedly belongs in Canton. And if you don't believe it, ask anyone at ESPN.

Fisher is great.  if you want a dirty team that mixes together 95% boredom and 5% random whackiness (remember the game in Tennessee where he onside kicked live four times?) with a huge probability of going 7-9 or 8-8 with a random combination of upsets and inexplicable losses, he's your guy.  Didn't help he kept one of the worst of all time offensive coordinators employed for the last couple of seasons (lets draft Tavon Austin super high then show zero creativity in using him outside of random between the tackle runs!)

Rex Ryan notes that 2 of the Bills’ first 4 opponents — Patriots and Giants — will have extra rest before playing the Bills. Scratches chin.

Rex Ryan says the Bills battled back when the Patriots were “clearly trying to embarrass us” in Week 2. Says his team “stood up” to NE.
