Is Rex actually aware that football consists of offense, defense and special teams?

Is he aware that the point is to win football games, not trump up cherry-picked stats in order to give his ego a good wanking?

On second thought, never mind. He's undoubtedly aware of all that, but because he's shitty at winning football games he has to revert to this nonsense.
He also measure top 10 defense by yards not points. He has not been in the top 10 on defense by points nearly as frequently (4 out of 11 years, and none recently)

Just heard Rex on Mike & Mike. He said he's had a top 10 defense every year he's been in the league. He's not counting the time they were ranked #11 (2013 Jets) because the Bills were ranked #10 and they gave up 270 yds rushing to the Pats in the last game, so, you know.
Thus, this past season was an outlier for Rex.
He seriously said that?

That is simply pathetic that he knows where his defense had ranked every year and that he knows how many yards another team gave up to the Patriots.

Not surprising nor is it that he would use it to try to make himself look better. Just goes to show you his focus. All about feeding the ego. Results are secondary.

Rex and Rob together again!!!!

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14545272/rex-ryan-buffalo-bills-hires-rob-ryan-defense

Rob Ryan, the former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator who was fired in November, will be joining the Bills as assistant head coach for defense after Rex Ryan hired him Sunday.

"I'm excited to have Rob join our staff, and I think he will be a great asset for our defense," Rex Ryan said in a statement. "He has a tremendous working knowledge of our schemes, and I look forward to his input."

This could be fun and has all the elements for a remake of the old Patty Duke Show

You realize that thy last 40 or so posts have been discussing that?

You just did your own "CNN is reporting..." joke.
I was aware there was a lot of TIC, Ryan reunion speculation here, but nothing official. I was listening to WFAN/Francesa today and they announced it, and i saw the ESPN story had just been posted, so...

I feel like this is one of those chicken and egg things. I'm not sure it's possible to tell whether the Pats have benefited from inept division mates or whether the Pats division mates seem/are inept because they are forced to compete with the most consistent franchise in the NFL in the new century. Are the other teams in the division all trying to be the NFL equivalent of the Marlins, but just can't get the timing right?

Or perhaps it's all a mirage anyway given the Pat's winning percentages in and out of the division.
I actually got into this debate with a Non-Pats fan recently. I honestly don't remember who his team was, but it's beside the point. I'd never really considered it much before but I think there's legitimate consideration owed to the fact that the Pats consistency and dominance has in fact furthered the crap produced by the rest of the division. It's generally held that front office and coaching stability leads to success or at least competency in the NFL, even though some teams can't resist change. And the afc east has been a turnstile on those fronts. The argument could be made that it's just ineptitude of the other teams. Or, it could be made that it's a direct result of the Pats being so good all the time and they are forcing that change. Not sure how much merit that stance has, but it's there at some level.

Here are the combined out-of-division records for NYJ, BUF, and MIA this millennium:

2015 16-14
2014 13-17
2013 14-16
2012 13-17
2011 13-17
2010 15-15

total 84-96 0.47

This should be compared to that of the other divisions minus the one team in each division that has been the most successful over that time period. Maybe I'll do that while waiting for the game to start.

I looked into this a while ago. Far easier to show that the Pats' non-division record is pretty much the same winning percentage as their in-division record (roughly .750 for both since 2009, typically a 12-4 year).

If the Pats' division sucks that means the rest of the NFL sucks as well, because the Pats thump both at roughly the same rate.

The divisional argument holds no water, and people who use it are big stupidheads who should be sterilized so their stupidity doesn't pass down to the next generation.

It's the dumbest argument ever because if the Pats had an exaggerated record because of a poor division then surely they would have been exposed year after year come playoff time.

Like the Colts.

Devil's advocate--it's like 3 posts above yours.

The East, minus NE, wins 47% of their games outside the division--only one AFC division wins more often.

Are we using "devil's advocate" for not reading the thread now? Because that could come in very handy.

Bills hire a female coach
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Bills have hired Kathryn Smith to serve as a special teams quality control coach. She becomes the first full-time female assistant coach in NFL history.

The position was made official with the league office on Tuesday, and the Bills have not yet issued a formal announcement of the move.

Smith worked as the administrative assistant to coach Rex Ryan in 2015, a position she also held during Ryan’s final year with the Jets. Before that, she spent seven years as a player personnel assistant with the Jets. Previously, she was a game day/special events intern and a college scouting intern.

Devils advocate - I fucked up. Sorry. It was Saturday night and I had just come out of that weird mini hibernation where you are a couple of beers deep but also responsible for getting the kids to fall asleep but they stay awake to spite you.

Funny you should say that. When NFL.com first reported her hire on their website Wednesday, this was the last line:

"Smith has her foot in the door and hopefully gets the opportunity to climb up the coaching ladder. If she does, she'll break ground each step of the way."

Maybe I am reading too much into this (Ala Welker) but I am still amazed at the free reign the Jet's loving writers and twitter handler's have. I can't imagine what the coverage will be like if the Jet's ever win a game in the playoffs.. God help us.

Thanks for the chuckle. But in all seriousness, I never thought of Rex as such a progressive type that would make this kind of move. Good for him and them.
Hate to say it, but gotta give Rex kudos as well. Fortunately, he still sucks as a coach....but it is good to see that sort of barrier broken in a small way.

I don't think you are reading anything into that. It's really not cool for those jokes to be made in a more or less league-sanctioned forum. It's entirely unprofessional and sophomoric. (Shocking, I know.)

EDIT: To be clear, I mean that those references are being made in an ARTICLE on the league website. Shots from the cheap seats on message boards (or even the Welker PC) and whatever else are a different thing entirely.

Not everyone thinks this is a good thing: http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2016/01/cleveland_radio_host_calls_kathryn_smith_hiring_absurd.html

There's no place for a woman in professional sports, in football coaching men," host Kevin Kiley said on the "Kiley & Carman" show Thursday morning on 92.3 The Fan WKRK.

"If you have 10 men playing on special teams, eight of them will be mumbling under their breath," Kiley said. "It's counterproductive. You're setting her up to fail."

If you're playing with 10 men on special teams you are setting your team up to fail. Hopefully she knows the rules better than Kiley.

Bills running back LeSean McCoy allegedly assaulted two off-duty cops at a Philly club early Sunday morning, sending the cops to the hospital.

McCoy and an unidentified friend got into a physical altercation with the two cops, according to WPVI-TV, Philly’s ABC affiliate. McCoy and his friend were not arrested but are the target of a police investigation, WPVI reported.

It’s not clear what sparked the altercation at Recess Lounge in Old City or if McCoy knew the two men were cops.

THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY, CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES

I thought he was a douche ever since the $.20 waiter tip and the recent Chip Kelly squabble.
I didn't realize he was "assaulting police officers" stupid. I hope he gets cut immediately.

Sounds like a bar fight that happened to be with two off duty cops. So it's not assaulting a police officer dumb. It's just stupid to get into a bar fight dumb.

ANY time you get into a fight with club/bar security it's a no-win situation. Someone is going to jail and it ain't gonna be the security or the off duty cops. Nothing good happens at 2:45 am in a bar fight.

It doesn't sound like they got into the fight with security tho. Just two guys who happened to be off duty cops. Then security came in. Unless I'm reading it wrong.
